Bishop of Penrith named as new Bishop of Carlisle

Yahoo09-05-2025

The current Bishop of Penrith, the Rt Rev Rob Saner-Haigh, has been announced by Downing Street as the 68th Bishop of Carlisle.
In May 2022, Bishop Rob was appointed the Bishop of Penrith and has been the Acting Bishop of Carlisle since September 2023. Having served his curacy in the county from 2005, he has ministered for all but two years in Cumbria.
Bishop Rob served his curacy in Appleby Deanery before moving to the parishes of Dalston with Cumdivock, Raughtonhead and Wreay.
He was Bishop's Chaplain for three years and Director of Ordinands for two.
From 2010 he was the Vicar of Holy Trinity Kendal and assistant Rural Dean for seven years prior to his move to the Diocese of Newcastle in 2020 to take up the position of Residentiary Canon Director of Mission and Ministry.
He returned to Cumbria in 2022 following his appointment as Bishop of Penrith.
He was born and raised in Birkenhead on Merseyside and attended Birmingham University to study Ancient History and Archaeology, later completing his MPhil research in Archaeology.
After working as an archaeologist, he worked for a church in Birmingham and then as a project manager in an IT firm before training for ordination at Wycliffe Hall in Oxford.
He is married to Emma. The couple have three children: Ollie (23), Jemima (21) and Hal (19).
Bishop Rob, 52, said: 'It is such an honour to have been nominated as the next Bishop of Carlisle and to be able to continue to serve this county that I love.
'This will be a time of both continuity and change for the Diocese of Carlisle. I'm a local vicar at heart and love the local church.
'It's where we learn together about who God is and what that means for our lives and the place where we can best serve our local communities.
'There is a rich variety of churches across the county, from those which have stood as a sign of God's love at the heart of their communities for a thousand years, to those starting new today in village halls or on fellsides.
'I will do all I can to help each flourish as, together, we seek to share the good news of Jesus. As Bishop of Carlisle, I will also seek to highlight this wonderful county and to do all I can for the people of Cumbria.'
Bishop Rob and his wife Emma have been touring the county on Friday, starting at Carlisle Cathedral before visiting Ivegill CE Primary School, where their children were once pupils.

They will later meet staff and ecumenical leaders at the Diocesan offices, Church House, in Penrith before visiting a social action programme at St Mary's Westfield.
From there they will meet members of the farming community in Rampside in the South Lakes as well as members of the South Lakes Poverty Truth Commission before attending St Lawrence's Appleby for Evening Prayer.
Bishop Rob succeeds the Rt Rev James Newcome as Bishop of Carlisle, following his retirement in August 2023. A service of installation and welcome will take place at Carlisle Cathedral on a date to be confirmed.

Elk Tip Toppers 4-H members volunteer at Manna Food Pantry

Jun. 5—WORTHINGTON — For 58 years, the Manna Food Pantry has been in business in the lower hall of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington. The pantry has helped people get access to not just food, but personal hygiene products as well. While the food pantry serves Nobles County, some Nobles County kids are returning the favor. Three sisters — Emma, 15, Clara, 11, and Raeya Hietbrink, 8 — are volunteering with Manna and giving back to their community. The Hietbrink sisters are members of the Elk Tip Toppers 4-H Club in Nobles County. The group had previously raised money and participated in food drives for Manna, but this time the girls got to see what things look like on the other end. Linda Sanchez, the coordinator for Manna, has worked at the food pantry for 13 years. She said the pantry is feeding an increasing number of people each day, and expressed concerns about the growing number of people who struggle with food insecurity. "A lot of that is due to the rising cost of groceries," she said. "Our costs go up just as much as everybody else that goes to the grocery store. So, our fundraisers are really important to us." While the cost of groceries has increased, so have the donations the food pantry has received. Their largest fundraiser of the year, the March Food Campaign, met and surpassed the pantry's goal. "That was a real blessing to the community," Sanchez said. She explained while they only have one food campaign a year, the pantry accepts donations throughout the entire year, whether it be monetary or product donations. Right now, a necessity is fresh produce. "If anybody wants to donate fresh produce, we would love it," Sanchez said. "We always like to have fresh produce on hand." The pantry focuses on keeping healthy items stocked. Sanchez shared they don't carry a lot of less healthy foods such as Hamburger Helper or sweetened cereals, unless they are donated. The pantry is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and is always looking for volunteers to help. Once a month members of the Trojan football team come in and help unload the supply truck. The Hietbrink sisters volunteered at Manna last year and found it to be a fun experience. "So we came back," Emma, who has been involved in 4-H since she was in kindergarten, said. She also shared that their club raised and donated $500 to Manna last year. "Some people donate food, but you can also donate money," Emma said. "Part of 4-H is helping people." Being a member of the 4-H club comes with responsibilities and expectations to give back to the community. Emma explained, "There's four H's. Head, heart, hands and health. And this is the part of our hands. We help people in our community." When community members walk through the pantry, the girls tell them how many items they can receive and help them as though it were a little grocery store. Emma said it is easier for the younger kids to do this type of community service work, rather some of their other projects, such as landscaping. "It's a more funner experience to help other people," Clara said. Emma works with livestock all summer showing her sheep, goats and cattle. She wants to be a veterinarian one day. Her sisters also work with livestock, but create a lot of crafts as well. Clara said she wants to be a farmer when she grows up and Raeya has plans to follow her oldest sister's goal to become a veterinarian.

Rob Burrow would be 'so proud' of MND centre

Rob Burrow would be "incredibly proud" of the motor neurone disease (MND) treatment centre that bears his name, his widow Lindsey said on the first anniversary of his death. Former Leeds Rhinos star Burrow died on 2 June last year aged 41 after being diagnosed with MND in 2019. The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease is set to open at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds later this summer. Speaking during a visit to the site, Lindsey Burrow said: "Ultimately that's what Rob wanted to do, to help other families." She told the BBC: "To have this centre for us as a family, as somewhere we can come to remember Rob and to be able to share that with other families that are in the same situation that we've been in, is incredibly special." "Rob would be incredibly proud, he was so humbled," Lindsey said. "To have this centre, to have the marathon, it's just part of Rob's legacy and the amazing work that he's done for the MND community. "He was the face of the MND community in the most difficult of circumstances but to have this, I think it really gives people hope." Burrow's parents Geoff and Irene were at Headingley Stadium - the home of Leeds Rhinos - on Saturday along with his sisters Joanne Hartshorne and Claire Burnett for the club's MND Awareness game against Wakefield Trinity. "We have good and bad days - more bad than good at the moment," admitted Geoff. "But Rob would want us to keep smiling and banging the drum for MND patients." A minute's applause was held for the former scrum-half and hooker before kick-off. Giant banners were displayed on the pitch, with one of them bearing his famous words: "In a world full of adversity we must dare to dream." Dr Agam Jung, consultant neurologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and director of the MND service at Leeds, was Burrow's consultant. "Rob's legacy is about courage and dignity," she said. "It's about changing the trajectory of the most cruel disease in the world and oh my goodness, that is something really special." She said she was "very pleased" with the progress at the site of the MND centre. "It's a centre for hope and the MND community draws hope," Dr Jung said. The fundraising effort championed by Burrow and his Leeds Rhinos team-mate Kevin Sinfield raised millions for MND charities following Burrow's diagnosis. Cash raised for the centre will allow researchers to launch projects aimed at reducing the time it takes to diagnose the condition. Rugby league coach and Burrow's former team-mate Jamie Jones-Buchanan also paid tribute to the late star to mark the anniversary, saying Burrow's "spirit and what he stood for is very much alive at Leeds Rhinos, and I think it always will be". "Every opportunity we've got to remember Rob and what he brought to the club and gave so many fans, so many tens of thousands of people, will be a part of who we are for many, many years," he said. Sinfield announced last week that he would be running seven ultra marathons in seven days in seven regions to raise money for MND charities. The challenge will take place in December and will include marathons in Sheffield and Leeds. He hopes the campaign will raise £777,777. "This has become less about running and more about bringing people together," he said.
