No road since independence: Rampur villagers risk lives on wooden bridge
NAINITAL: Seventy-eight years after India's Independence, the residents of Rampur village in Ramnagar block, Nainital district, are still waiting for a proper road. Their only link to the outside world is a fragile wooden bridge built by villagers themselves, now posing serious danger, especially during the monsoon.
Every day, around 200 people, including schoolchildren, cross the wooden bridge over the Ramgad River to reach Kotabagh and beyond. During the rains, the river swells, making the ageing structure even riskier. A decade ago, locals had no choice but to wade through the river holding hands or using ropes to cross.
Mahesh Chandra, a local resident, told
TOI
that despite repeated appeals and even a chief ministerial promise of a motor road from Patkot to Rampur Tonia via Kotabagh, nothing has moved on the ground.
The proposed 8-km road, sanctioned with an estimated cost of Rs 96.40 lakh, remains stuck because the route passes through the Shivalik Elephant Reserve. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the chief wildlife warden has yet to be issued.
Chandra added that since 2016, PWD Ramnagar officials have repeatedly written to the forest department, but the required clearance is still pending. Formal reminders from the chief engineer's office in Dehradun and the forest conservator have also failed to push the file forward.

'Generations have come and gone here without ever seeing a proper road,' says Ramesh Chandra, another local. 'We built this wooden bridge ourselves to stay connected. It's dangerous, especially for schoolchildren, the elderly, and during medical emergencies. For every basic need, we must travel to Patkot.'
Villagers say that while Rampur was recently declared a revenue village ahead of the first gram pradhan elections, no revenue-related processes have begun.
The Executive Engineer of PWD, Ramnagar, in an official reply, confirmed that while the project is approved in principle, work cannot begin until the forest department grants the NOC. Officials claim the matter is being actively followed up.

Kochi school marks Independence Day with Dandi March reenactment
Kochi: In a unique tribute to India's freedom struggle, students of Rajagiri Seashore CMI School recreated the historic Dandi March at Chappa beach, near Vypeen, on Friday, as part of their Independence Day celebrations themed 'Salt to Swaraj'. The day began with the ceremonial flag hoisting by the school authorities. Principal Elizabeth Mathew said the programme aimed to give students a deeper understanding of the struggle for independence and its relevance today. Following this, students and staff walked along the sandy shore in a symbolic recreation of Mahatma Gandhi's 1930 protest against the salt tax, retracing the spirit of his 24-day march to Dandi. Cultural performances, including patriotic group songs, thematic dances and an art exhibition by students focusing on freedom movement and India's cultural heritage, added colour to the event. The celebrations were attended by Vypeen MLA K N Unnikrishnan and Elamkunnapuzha panchayat president Rasikala Priyaraj, who commended the students for honouring the nation's history. Bengaluru blast leaves homes flattened and lives fractured
Bengaluru: If not for the public holiday, the number of injuries in Friday morning's blast at Chinnayanapalya might have been far fewer. Residents say many of those injured or left homeless are daily wage workers who usually step out by 7am. But with the day off, most stayed indoors — a coincidence that turned fatal for one. "It was around 8am, and I was tying flowers right outside my house. Suddenly, I heard a loud noise, so loud I couldn't hear anything else for the next few minutes," said 68-year-old Ratnamma, who lives just metres from the blast site. Her granddaughter Megha, visiting from her village with her infant, had been asleep inside. Ratnamma rushed inside to find them shivering. Lakshmaiah R, a taxi driver, whose building stands next to the destroyed houses, said his family and tenants escaped with only minor property damage. "I had just gone to bed at 5am after three days of continuous work. The blast woke me up. I could see my neighbours' houses collapsing. This is the first time in 70 years that anything like this has happened here. We didn't have setback area rules when these houses were built," he said. The shockwave was felt hundreds of metres away. A resident of Shamanna Garden, about 500 metres from the site, said: "I was getting my daughter ready for school when we heard it. The fan and the TV set shook. I've heard the noise from Metro work before, but this was many times louder." Some survived by sheer chance. Subramani, a 62-year-old plumber, had just stepped out to take a shower when the blast occurred. His son said, "My mother had gone to work at 7.30am. My father just stepped out. That saved him. He got a small head injury, but the house is gone." Subramani's home stood just behind the one where the explosion took place. The blast left about 60 people homeless and claimed the life of 8-year-old Mubarak. The house at the centre of the explosion was rented by Aiyappan and Kasturi, a couple from Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu. "They are financially weak; the man works in construction, which is why I rented the place to them," said the property owner. By late morning, senior police officers arrived at the site. Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh spoke to the residents, many still in shock. "All we heard was a loud noise; we rushed out. I don't know anything else, sir," Rajeshwari, whose house was damaged, told him. Property owners who lived elsewhere hurried to the site, only to be kept at a distance while police secured the area. "I've been told it's all debris now. The people here are very poor. I hope everyone is safe," said Vajramma, who owns one of the affected houses.
