Catholic Sabha demands justice for nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh

Mangaluru/ Udupi: Hundreds of citizens, social activists, and religious leaders gathered outside the Mini Vidhana Soudha on Monday, under the aegis of the Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh, to demand justice for two Catholic nuns and a tribal youth arrested in Chhattisgarh under dubious charges. They stood in solidarity with Sister Preethi Mary and Sister Vandana Francis—both from Kerala—and Sukaman Mandavi of Narayanpur, arrested on July 25 at Durg Railway Station on alleged charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion of three tribal women. Santosh D'Souza, president of the Catholic Sabha, delivered the opening remarks. Rophy D'Costa, former president and PRO of the Catholic Sabha, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the increasing intolerance and misuse of legal systems to target marginalised communities. Sr. Severine Menezes, former president of Conference of Religious India (CRI) Mangalore, said, "Christian institutions serve the most vulnerable—with education, healthcare, and social upliftment. To accuse us of coercion is to attack every person who selflessly serves." Rev Fr Dominic Vas, present CRI president and parish priest of St Mary's Church, Bikarnakatta, said, "We hold the Bible in one hand and the Constitution in the other. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo We are patriots—not fanatics. The demonstration was also joined by former MLA JR Lobo, clergy members, and religious sisters—symbolising a united, intergenerational stand against rising hostility. 23 Palamu undertrials ‘enlarged on bail'

Daltonganj: Twenty-three undertrial prisoners (UTP) were 'enlarged on bail' between July 15 and 30 from their respective trial courts in Palamu, following recommendations by an undertrial review committee (UTRC). UTRC comprises the principal district and sessions judge, deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, jail superintendent, and secretary of the district legal services authority (DLSA). The secretary of the Palamu DLSA, Rakesh Ranjan, said, " A total of 24 cases of the undertrials lodged in the Daltonganj central jail were taken up during the July 15 meeting of the UTRC. Twenty-three were enlarged on bail, while one case is pending." The cases pertained to the undertrials, who have served half of the maximum period of punishment specified for the offence for which they were sent to judicial custody, he added. Citizens face inconvenience as AP Police Seva app down again

1 2 Vijayawada: AP Police Seva mobile application, once a key digital platform for lodging complaints, verifying social media news, and accessing a host of citizen services, is currently non-functional and has been removed from both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The disruption began during the 2024 general elections and marks the second such outage—earlier seen during the arrest of TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu in September 2023. Launched in September 2020, the app was designed to reduce physical visits to police stations by enabling online complaint registration, tracking case progress, paying challans, and availing other services. It offered 85 features, including requesting home surveillance during absence, background verification for employees or tenants, and real-time updates on public safety. One of its standout components focused on women's safety, offering GPS-enabled alerts about high-risk areas based on geo-tagged crime data. The platform was widely praised for promoting citizen-friendly policing and bridging the gap between the police and the public. The sudden unavailability of the app has forced citizens to revert to traditional methods of police interaction, slowing down grievance redressal and affecting transparency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These T-Shirt Fails are Just Too Hilarious Undo Speaking to TOI, CH Srikanth, inspector general of police, technical services, said, "The app is currently being upgraded with new services and is under testing via the Google Play Store. After over two weeks of testing, the app will go live to the public and will also be launched on iOS devices." He added that in the meantime, citizens can access the services previously available on the app through the AP Government's WhatsApp governance number.
