SDAIA Awarded WSIS Certificate of Excellence for Organizing AI Olympiad
During the 2025 award ceremony, the WSIS recognized the IAIO as an unparalleled project in Category 7 (E-Science), according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The ceremony also represented an integral part of the AI for Good Summit in Geneva held from July 8 to 11.
This recognition reflects the ongoing efforts of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) to boost innovation and elevate national and international capacities of the artificial intelligence.
Through advanced initiatives and programs, SDAIA also seeks to empower national talents and build the technological and programming skills of the future leaders.
Crucially, the awarded projects constitute only 9% of the total number of projects submitted to the annual WSIS Prizes.
Organized by the UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU), WSIS Prizes witnessed the participation of over 194 countries, mirroring the significance of global competition.
In collaboration with the International Center for AI Research and Ethics (ICAIRE), AI Olympiad featured participants from more than 25 countries around the world.
By hosting such a prestigious exhibition, SDAIA offers an international platform for AI competitions and an umbrella that brings together brilliant minds and spreads the concept of the Smart Olympiad among current generations.

Track Your Bags: Saudia Boosts Baggage Recovery with Apple Location Sharing
Saudia, the national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, has launched a new feature that enables passengers to track their lost or delayed baggage, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). The 'Share Item Location' feature from Apple allows Saudia travelers to privately and securely locate and return baggage equipped with an AirTag or 'Find My network' accessory. Passengers can easily get a baggage location sharing link from the Find My app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac devices. Then, they can send the link via Saudia digital portal. For more safety, this location sharing automatically expires after 7 days or upon baggage recovery. Moreover, passengers can choose to deactivate it manually at any point. Powered by Apple's Find My network, the 'Share Item Location' feature allows a passenger to find their lost items using a billion Apple devices nearby. It is totally private and encrypted, meaning no one else can view an item's location or information. Passengers can access this feature by ensuring their Apple device is updated to iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 or later. In the light of this, Chief Data and Technology Officer at Saudia Group, Abdulgader Attiah, said that the launch of the 'Share Item Location' feature underscores Saudia's commitment to digital transformation and harnessing cutting-edge technology to elevate the traveler experience. Furthermore, he pointed out that the collaboration with Apple reflects Saudia's dedication to providing world-class services and establishing its status as a leader in the aviation industry through adopting innovative solutions that enhance service benchmarks and operational efficiency. Look up: Delta Aquariid meteor shower peaks over Saudi Arabia
RIYADH: Stargazers across Saudi Arabia and the wider region are in for a celestial treat in the early hours of Wednesday, July 30, as the annual Delta Aquariid meteor shower reaches its peak. According to the Saudi Press Agency, weather and moon conditions are expected to offer ideal viewing, especially in areas away from city lights. Majed Abu Zahra, head of the Jeddah Astronomical Society, said the best time to observe the meteor shower will be after 3 a.m. local time, when the radiant point in the constellation Aquarius climbs higher in the southern sky. The early setting of the moon will also ensure darker skies for stargazing. Observers can expect approximately 18 meteors per hour during peak activity, potentially reaching 25 under ideal conditions. Abu Zahra noted that these fast-moving meteors often produce bright trails and occasional fireballs. While visible in both hemispheres, the Delta Aquariids are best seen from the tropics and and southern lattitudes, where the radiant point sits higher above the horizon. Abu Zahra noted that no special equipment is needed, just a clear, dark sky, as well as allowing 20 minutes for eyes to adapt to darkness and committing at least one full hour to observation for optimal results. The Delta Aquariid shower occurs annually between July 12 and Aug. 23 as Earth passes through debris left by Comet 96P/Machholz. Dust particles ignite upon entering the atmosphere at 41 kilometers per second, vaporizing at altitudes of 70-100 kilometers to create luminous streaks. Although the peak occurs early on Wednesday, the meteor activity will continue into early August and gradually blend with the more intense Perseid meteor shower, which peaks mid-August.

The gathering will engage AlUla residents, visitors, astronomy enthusiasts and space researchers in an interactive experience, including field observation sessions and scientific discussions led by members of the AlUla Astronomy Club. Such initiatives help foster a scientific culture and encourage community interest in cosmic discoveries, the SPA added. Participants will have the opportunity to witness the Milky Way firsthand, track various astronomical phenomena such as meteor showers and observe the North Star. The event promises a captivating visual experience in a natural setting free from light pollution, blending contemplation with the joy of stargazing.
