
World Bank approves $930M loan to modernize Iraq's key railway
This investment will focus on rehabilitating and upgrading 1,047 kilometers of existing railway lines that connect the nation's primary seaport at Umm Qasr in the south to Mosul in the north, via the capital, Baghdad. The goal is to enhance performance, boost domestic trade, create substantial employment, and help diversify Iraq's economy away from its heavy reliance on oil.
The IREM project is strategically aligned with Iraq's ambitious Development Road (IDR) initiative, which was announced in May 2023. The IDR aims to transform Iraq into a crucial transit center linking the Gulf to Turkey and onwards to Europe. Officials recognize that before this grand vision can be realized, the backbone of the existing national rail network—which has suffered from decades of neglected maintenance and underfunding—must be rebuilt.
'As Iraq transitions from reconstruction to development, enhanced trade and connectivity can spur growth, create jobs, and reduce oil dependence,' said Jean-Christophe Carret, World Bank Middle East Director. 'The Iraq Railway Expansion and Modernization Project is vital for transforming Iraq into a regional transport hub and helps achieve the Development Road's goals of improved connectivity, economic diversification, and growth.'
The $930 million financing will fund a comprehensive overhaul of the railway sector. Beyond modernizing the tracks themselves, the project will address the aging fleet of locomotives and rolling stock, renovate the key Baiji maintenance workshop, and provide essential equipment and spare parts.
A crucial component is the enhancement of private sector participation in the creation of modern dry ports and logistics centers along the route, which will generate high-skill, sustainable jobs. The project will also implement a comprehensive safety management system, upgrade infrastructure and crossings, and provide extensive training for the staff of Iraqi Republic Railways (IRR), with a specific focus on supporting the participation of women in the sector.
To ensure swift and effective implementation, an international firm will be contracted to manage the project's capital expenditure and help build IRR's capacity to handle large-scale infrastructure programs.
The projected outcomes of the IREM project are transformative. By 2037, the rehabilitated line is expected to transport 2.85 million passengers annually, along with 6.3 million tons of domestic freight and 1.1 million tons of import/export cargo.
This shift of freight from road to rail will significantly reduce damage to Iraq's highways and lower annual road maintenance costs. On the employment front, the project will create over 3,000 full-time construction jobs for seven years and, once operational, is projected to support approximately 21,900 jobs annually by 2040, marking a major boost for the national economy. By revitalizing this critical artery, Iraq is not just rebuilding a railway; it is laying the tracks for a more connected, diversified, and prosperous future.

Jameel Motors to distribute OMODA and JAECOO in Iraq
Baghdad ( – Saudi-based Abdul Latif Jameel's mobility arm, Jameel Motors, is set to bring Chery's OMODA and JAECOO brands to Iraq for the first time, in a move targeting the nation's fast-growing automotive sector. This development comes amid a broader push by Chinese automakers into Iraq. In July, BYD Auto entered the market through an exclusive distribution deal with NAT, part of the March Holding Group.

Airlines worldwide resume use of Iraqi airspace after June shutdown
Baghdad ( – Commercial air traffic over Iraq is steadily rebounding as both Gulf and international carriers return to the country's skies, according to data from FlightRadar24. The reopening follows Iraq's temporary airspace closure in June during a period of heightened regional tensions which forced carriers to divert flights. Since the Iraqi government restored access to key air corridors in late June, airlines have cautiously resumed operations, returning to full activity similar to levels before the tensions began. Emirates has reintroduced a limited number of overflights while Qatar Airways, Air Arabia and Flydubai have restored full schedules to Baghdad, Erbil and Basra. Beyond the Gulf, Turkish Airlines, Middle East Airlines (MEA) and Royal Jordanian have also returned to Iraqi skies, some using them as transit corridors and others resuming direct routes to major Iraqi cities. In addition to passenger services, Iraq's airspace has seen a surge in overflights from major international carriers using it as a strategic transit route between East and West. Air France, Air India, Red Wings of Russia and Uzbekistan Airways have all resumed using Iraq for overflights, joined by cargo and private operators from Austria, Turkey and San Marino. According to the Iraqi Transport Ministry, daily traffic now exceeds 700 aircraft, a record high supported by upgraded air traffic control infrastructure and the introduction of new transit air routes. Aviation experts see the gradual resumption as a sign of increasing confidence in Iraq's airspace security.

Iran halts electricity supplies to Iraq
Baghdad ( – Iran's Power Generation, Distribution, and Transmission Company, known as Tavanir, said that it ceased electricity supplies to neighboring Iraq in order to meet increased local demand. Tavanir's head of transmission and international trade operations, Mohammad Allahdad, said on Wednesday that Iran's power exports had dropped dramatically in recent months, according to the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA). Allahdad stated that Iran is trying to enhance its power purchases while reducing exports to neighboring countries. The majority of Iran's electricity exports, which were formerly directed toward Iraq under international contracts, had now ceased entirely, according to Allahdad. Iran is seeing an increase in power consumption as a result of a blistering heatwave that has afflicted various areas of the country. The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity said last month that its current energy production is around 24,500 megawatts, with an operational deficit of over 4,000 megawatts. The spokesperson for the Electricity Ministry, Ahmed Musa, said in a statement that Iraq has reached its peak summer load season, resulting in increased energy consumption, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported. Musa elaborated that Iraq's power grid is currently losing more than 4,000 megawatts as a result of the imported gas shortage. As Iraq depends heavily on gas imports from Iran to operate many power plants, the country is receiving only 22 million cubic meters of the gas needed to operate power plants every day, out of the 55 million cubic meters necessary for the month, according to Musa. The Iraqi Electricity Minister, Ziyad Ali Fadel, mentioned earlier that between 32,000 and 35,000 megawatts are needed to cover domestic consumption.
