CHANDIGARH: Panjab University students have to give an undertaking at the time of admission to stay away from drugs and submit to medical tests at random. This mandatory declaration binds students and their parents to acknowledge university's zero-tolerance policy on drugs, alcohol and tobacco - both in hostels and on campus.
According to new rules, students must consent to undergo random drug testing - including breath, blood or urine analysis - if deemed necessary by Panjab University (PU) authorities. The move is in line with a University Grants Commission advisory, calling on all higher educational institutions to implement anti-drug measures. It recommended obtaining written commitments from students, creating awareness, and strengthening surveillance systems to prevent substance abuse.
The university's new undertaking warns of strict disciplinary action, including suspension, expulsion or legal proceedings against students found in possession of or involved in consumption or distribution of banned substances.
PU authorities have also introduced compulsory guest registration in hostels and are in the process of tightening access control.
Officials said the anti-drug undertaking was part of a broader crackdown to safeguard campus environment and student wellbeing.

"This isn't just about one incident. The undertaking, awareness drives and improved monitoring are part of a systematic effort to make PU a safe and drug-free campus," said a senior official.
PU has instructed all departments and hostel wardens to collect signed undertakings from students and their parents before finalizing admissions.
The move comes after the death of an outsider of a suspected drug overdose in a PU boys' hostel in Nov. The case triggered scrutiny, especially after a student and a former student were arrested.

Gujarat hospitals see worrying resistance to powerful antibiotics

SLUG: STATE's AMR PROFILE Ahmedabad: A recent govt study has revealed a worrying trend in Gujarat's hospitals — some of the most powerful antibiotics are no longer effective against common bacterial infections. The report found that more than 40% of E. coli and Klebsiella bacteria — two major antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens often responsible for serious infections — are now resistant to carbapenems, a high-end antibiotic typically used when all others fail. You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad This is one of the key findings of the surveillance report by the Gujarat State Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network (GUJSAR), released on Wednesday. The report analysed 14,685 AMR isolates collected between July 1 and December 31, 2024, from 22 network laboratories, including microbiology labs of six govt medical colleges, 13 GMERS medical colleges, and three municipal corporation-run medical colleges. "While other drugs are still available — including colistin, the last resort for very severe bacterial infections — resistance to carbapenems signals that we are rapidly running out of feasible antibiotic options for serious infections. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 今すぐ、2025年最高のRPGゲームを制覇しよう! A senior state health department official told TOI that Gujarat is among the few Indian states with a dedicated AMR surveillance network. "All steps — from identifying antimicrobial resistance to specific antibiotics to reporting isolates — are standardized," the official said. T he report focuses on priority pathogens, identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as posing the highest threat to human health due to their resistance to existing antibiotics. The findings show that the majority of AMR isolates were from urine samples (42%), followed by pus aspirates (31%). About 62% of the isolates came from hospitalized patients, and 16% from patients in intensive care units (ICUs). Sources said that AMR organisms have been rising steadily — a trend also highlighted in Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reports. "In recent years, gram-negative bacteria have shown increased resistance to several commonly used antibiotics. Some bacteria isolated from blood cultures also showed resistance, suggesting that if the correct antibiotics are not administered in time, it can lead to septicaemia — a potentially life-threatening bloodstream infection," said a microbiologist.

Tyreek Hill accused of using intimidation tactics in messy divorce battle with estranged wife Keeta Vaccaro

Tyreek Hill dragged into controversy as Keeta Vaccaro accuses him of manipulation during ugly divorce (Getty Images) The divorce between Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill and Keeta Vaccaro has turned into a bitter courtroom feud that's now being publicly aired in documents and legal filings, with accusations flying from both sides. What began as a private split is rapidly becoming a high-profile legal spectacle, revealing not only strained personal dynamics but also an increasingly contentious battle over control, reputation, and custody. Keeta Vaccaro calls out Tyreek Hill 's alleged 'silencing tactics' in explosive twist to divorce proceedings Vaccaro's legal team is pushing back hard against Hill's recent motion for a gag order, labeling it a veiled attempt to silence her in court. The motion, originally filed by Hill's lawyers on June 23, requested a Miami judge to bar Vaccaro from making statements in legal documents that could harm Hill's public image. But Vaccaro's attorneys argue that the move reeks of intimidation and hypocrisy. 'In terms of purpose, the Husband's motion is a clear attempt to silence and intimidate wife's counsel and control the representation that she receives in this litigation,' they stated in the response, which was first obtained by Daily Mail. They also pointed out, 'He wants to silence the wife's lawyers while his own pleadings disparage and denigrate the wife. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo ' Tyreek Hill & Keeta Vaccaro Divorce: Toxic Breakups | Humble Baddies The irony of Hill's complaint wasn't lost on Vaccaro's lawyers, who referenced what they called 'The Goose-Gander Rule,' pointing to what they see as double standards. They argue that while Hill wants to censor Vaccaro's legal commentary, he himself has made damaging allegations. In one such filing, Hill accused Vaccaro of stealing from him and fraudulently accessing his financial accounts to benefit herself and her mother. 'Three days before he filed his motion to enjoin, he filed a pleading in which he alleged… that the wife 'has a history of stealing,'' her lawyers noted, citing a headline that subsequently ran in media reports. Hill's attorneys, Michael Gottlieb and Christi Bright, claim the gag order is necessary to prevent further reputational damage, suggesting that the NFL player is a public figure under greater scrutiny. Vaccaro's response firmly counters that argument, claiming Hill simply doesn't want to 'look bad.' Beyond the battle over speech, the divorce has sparked disputes over finances and custody. Vaccaro, who shares an 8-month-old daughter named Capri with Hill, alleged that he has failed to pay temporary spousal or child support. She also accused him of withholding access to their shared home and a vehicle, denying her financial stability in the process. 'The motion is another example of the Husband's pattern of coercive control,' the response claimed. Tensions escalated further following a domestic dispute at the couple's Miami apartment in April — the same month Vaccaro filed for divorce, citing the marriage as 'irretrievably broken.' Police reports revealed that Hill had thrown a laptop and walked toward a balcony with their daughter. Though no arrests were made, officers noticed a bruise on Vaccaro's chest. In an emergency filing, Vaccaro claimed Hill disappeared for two nights following the incident and later took their daughter without her consent. She is now seeking exclusive use of the home and supervised visitation for Hill. The couple had married in November 2023 during the Dolphins' bye week, after being engaged for over two years. This unraveling, however, has exposed a much deeper breakdown than what the public had previously known, with both sides now prepared for a long legal confrontation. Nipah: Experts seek deeper eco studies

Kozhikode: Over the past year, four Nipah infections were reported in Malappuram, including the suspected death of an 18-year-old girl at Makkaraparamba on July 1. Now, deeper studies are being sought to examine whether repeated spillovers of the virus are being caused by ecological factors such as disturbances in bat habitats. Experts have stressed the need for better monitoring of Pteropus fruit bats, the natural carriers of the virus, along with efforts to protect their habitats and raise awareness to reduce human-bat contact. A study published in PLOS Global Public Health in December 2024 pointed out some key findings. It was led by experts including TS Anish, nodal officer of Kerala One Health Centre for Nipah Research and Resilience. The study said that four of the six Nipah outbreaks in Kerala (2018, 2019, 2023, July 2024) happened during El Nino years. All six took place between May and Sept, which is the fruit ripening season. It said that these patterns showed how environmental factors affect man-animal interactions and may lead to Nipah outbreaks. The study also noted that fear during Nipah outbreaks in Kerala led to harmful social behaviour. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo It often caused conflicts between people and animals and ended with more bat habitats being damaged. People were found cutting trees used by bats and using firecrackers to scare them away. Another study in Malaysia said such actions could increase chances of human-bat contact and may cause infected bats to migrate to new areas. Faculty at Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University's centre for wildlife studies (CWS) Dr George Chandy said that field studies conducted by the centre found evidence of destruction of bat roosts in Kozhikode and Wayanad. Dr Chandy said that the exact way Nipah spreads from bats to humans is still unclear. He said it is important not to disturb bat roosts. After every outbreak, it was seen that people destroyed bat habitats in many areas. During student fieldwork, some roosts found in pilot studies were found affected. Dr Chandy said that people had cut tree branches with bat roosts at Pazhassi Park in Mananthavady. Crackers and other methods were used to scare bats which might cause stress and increase virus spread. He said the two main actions needed now are to protect bat habitats and raise awareness to reduce interactions between humans and bats. Prejith K, Associate Professor at KVASU, said that ecological factors in the region should be studied more and added that climate change might be causing stress in bats. "Recurring cases highlight the need to examine if ecological factors including deforestation or land use changes are contributing to habitat loss of bats and inducing stress among bat populations," he said. He added that the growing number of fruit trees in house compounds, including non-native ones, could attract more bats. He said this needs to be studied to understand if it is leading to more human-bat contact.
