
Three from music industry killed in San Diego private plane crash
The music agency Sound Talent Group said three of its employees, including co-founder Dave Shapiro, died on the private plane that crashed into a San Diego neighbourhood.
Shapiro is listed as the owner of the plane and has a pilot's license, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Shapiro also owned a flight school called Velocity Aviation and a record label, Velocity Records, according to his LinkedIn page.
The UK Independent reported another of the fatalities was Daniel Williams, a former drummer with the Christian rock band The Devil Wears Prada.
The Devil Wears Prada official Instagram account shared a tribute to the former member. A photo of the drummer was captioned: "no words. We owe you everything. Love you forever."
Prior to the flight, Williams posted photos of an aircraft cockpit, saying he was "flying back" with Shapiro and that he was acting as a "(co)pilot".
The musician's father, Larry Williams, told TMZ his son was probably kidding and he did not have a pilot's licence.
The Sound Talent Group agency didn't share the names of the other two who died.
"We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder, colleagues and friends. Our hearts go out to their families and to everyone impacted by today's tragedy," the agency said in a statement.
Sound Talent Group has represented artists including Hanson, Sum 41 and Vanessa Carlton.
The total number of fatalities is unknown, but six people were on board the plane, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The private jet crashed early Thursday (local time) into a neighborhood of US Navy-owned housing in San Diego during foggy weather, igniting at least one home and numerous vehicles parked on the street. The plane clipped power lines before slamming into the house, said Elliot Simpson with the National Transportation Safety Board.
Several people were injured while trying to flee after the crash just before 4am in Murphy Canyon, the largest neighborhood of Navy-owned housing in the country. Others were treated for smoke inhalation, authorities said.
At least one home was destroyed with its front heavily burned and its roof partially collapsed. About 10 others suffered damage at the site where half a dozen vehicles were melted and scorched into burned shells.
Ariya Waterworth said she woke up to a "whooshing sound" and then saw a giant fireball outside. She screamed for help as firefighters arrived and helped her get out with her two children and their family dog.
One of the family's cars was "completely disintegrated," and the other had extensive damage. Her yard was littered with plane parts, broken glass and debris.
"I definitely do feel blessed because we've been spared," she said.
San Diego police officer Anthony Carrasco said five people from a single family were taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation after evacuating to a nearby school.
Another person was treated at a hospital for injuries sustained while climbing out of a window trying to flee. Two others were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
At least 100 residents were evacuated, police said, with surrounding blocks cordoned off with yellow police tape and checkpoints. Jet fuel rolled down Salmon St hours after the crash. The smell of fuel lingered in the air while authorities worked to extinguish one stubborn car fire that sent smoke billowing up.
"I can't quite put words to describe what the scene looks like, but with the jet fuel going down the street, and everything on fire all at once, it was pretty horrific to see," San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said.
San Diego officials haven't released details about the plane but said it was a flight from the Midwest.
The flight tracking site FlightAware lists a Cessna Citation II jet scheduled to arrive at the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive airport in San Diego at 3.47am from the small Colonel James Jabara Airport in Wichita, Kansas. Officials at the Kansas airport said it made a fueling stop in Wichita.
The flight, according to FlightAware, originated Wednesday night in Teterboro, New Jersey, about 10km from Manhattan and is an airfield frequently used by private and corporate jets.
Audio recorded by www.liveATC.net includes a brief transmission from the pilot calling out that he was on final approach to the Montgomery-Gibbs airport and was about three miles out at 3.45am.
The plane is owned by Daviation LLC, based in Alaska, and its owner held a pilot's license, according to Federal Aviation Administration records. Public records show the owner also had at least one address in San Diego. The Associated Press couldn't immediately reach the owner, his family or business partners.
Christopher Moore, who lives one street over from the crash site, said he and his wife were awakened by a loud bang. They grabbed their three young boys and ran out of the house. On their way out of the neighbourhood, they saw a car engulfed in flames.
"It was definitely horrifying for sure, but sometimes you've just got to drop your head and get to safety," he said.
Police officers rescued multiple animals, including three husky puppies that were rolled away in a wagon. A few blocks away, families, including Moore's, stood in a parking lot waiting to learn when they could return to their homes.
Eddy said it was very foggy at the time the private plane crashed. "You could barely see in front of you," he said. Officials were looking into whether the plane had clipped a power line before crashing into the neighbourhood that is about 3km from the Montgomery-Gibbs airport.
City Councilmember Raoul Castillo said residents told him dramatic stories "about military families helping military families out of their homes, jumping out of windows and avoiding fire".
The FAA said the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation.
At that hour and in foggy weather, the plane was likely operating on an instrument flight rules plan, which is typically used during reduced visibility, said Barry Newman, a board-certified aviation attorney.
However, for that airport, once the aircraft reaches 205m, the pilot also has to rely on his sight.
"If a pilot descends to that level and he can't see the runway, he has to call for a missed approach or divert to another airport," Newman said.
In October 2021, a twin-engine plane plowed into a San Diego suburb, killing the pilot and a UPS delivery driver on the ground and burning homes. It was preparing to land at the airport.
In December 2008, a US Marine Corps fighter jet slammed into a house in San Diego's University City neighbourhood, causing an explosion that killed four people inside. The Marine Corps blamed the crash on mechanical failure and human error.

Thieves In The Kitchen: The Stealing Of Recipes
Recipe author Nagi Maehashi, unmoved by her own numbing banality, is peeved. Her target: Penguin books and author Brooke Bellamy. Her accusation: the apparent copying of recipes for caramel slice and baklava from Maehashi's RecipeTin Eats website, released in Bellamy's Bake with Brooki, published in October last year. 'Profiting from plagiarised recipes is unethical,' she huffed, 'even if it is not copyright infringement – and undermines the integrity of the entire book.' Rather indulgently, Maehashi goes on to decry this as a 'slap in the face to every author who puts in the hard work to create original content rather than cutting corners.' The question left begging is whether this is ever possible for a cookbook. Bellamy, who has the combined weight of 3 million followers on TikTok and Instagram, has flatly denied the accusation. 'I did not plagiarise any recipes in my book which consists of 100 recipes I have created over many years,' she claims on Instagram. 'In 2016, I opened my first bakery. I have been creating my recipes and selling them commercially since October 2016.' The social media figure is candid in admitting that she did not invent any of the recipes listed in her book dealing with cookies, cupcakes, brownies or cakes. On the issue of the caramel slice, Bellamy merely observes that the RecipeTin Eats recipe, published in March 2020, 'uses the same ingredients as my recipe, which I have been making and selling since four years prior.' Evidently not a pugilist, Bellamy has even offered to remove the caramel slice and baklava recipes from any future reprints of her book, a point 'communicated to Nagi swiftly through discussions'. Another author from cookbook land, Adam Liaw, abandons his kitchen implements briefly to explain the finer points of intellectual property in light of this dispute. As an intellectual property lawyer in his previous non-cooking life, he suggests that the copyright 'doesn't protect the recipe itself. It protects the publication of the exact same written form of that recipe. None of the recipes written in the world would reach the standards necessary to obtain patent protection.' A closer look at the claim is one of plagiarism. This is an interesting point, given the multitude of borrowings, replications and, along the way, adjustments, that come along with the use of recipes. Professor John Swinson from the University of Queensland adds insult to injury to Maehashi's case by simply stating that the steps involved in making the recipe were 'not very expressive'. When looking at a comparison between the two recipes in question, one is left with a similar impression. 'You can't protect a cake or cookie,' Swinson clarifies. 'You can only protect how it\s expressed, not the end result, and most recipes are just factual instructions'. A sticking point here is the issue of attribution. Under the Australian Copyright Act 1968 (Cth), there are various described moral rights, as distinct from economic rights. These include the right of attribution (that the author be identified and named as the author of that work); the right against false attribution (the right of the author to prevent someone else from being credited as the author of their work; and the right of integrity (the right of an author to ensure that the work is not subjected to derogatory treatment harmful to the author's honour or reputation). Historically speaking, the publication of recipes drawn from the vast archive of cookery is more than standard. We find Isabella Beeton in October 1861, a co-editor of the Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine pillaging at will any number of recipes for The Book of Household Management. As food boffin and author Helana Brigman points out, this book of revelation for Victorian readers, one that allayed fears about 'how much should a family of five spend on groceries', had nothing that was her own. In writing her book, Beeton made generous use of readers' submissions. The fact remains that, however murky one might assume the laws on copyright were on the subject, neither US nor British copyright laws (ditto Australia's equivalent) protect a listing of ingredients, even those found in formulas, compounds, or prescriptions. Broadly speaking, claiming some ownership over a dish is much like asserting control over the air and its vapours. An iconoclastic Jonathan Meades takes the torch to such proprietary assertions in his The Plagiarist in the Kitchen: A Lifetime of Culinary Thefts. His work eschews 'culinary originality', being an 'anti-cookbook' favouring 'the daylight robbery of recipes, to hijacking techniques and methods, to the notion that in the kitchen there is nothing new and nor can there be anything new.' Meades rightly notes that the pathology of originality arises from the emergence of the cult chef, the God creator in the kitchen. In an interview, he notes how it began 'in upscale restaurants in Spain and then in Britain with Heston Blumenthal.' The entire grievance on Maehashi's part has given Bellamy even more oxygen for her enterprise, with the latter preferring to repair back to the bakery. Two new stores are set to open in Queensland in July. An international pop-up store in the United Arab Emirates is planned to open by the end of the year, adding to existing ones in the Middle East. If Bellamy was ever a thief in the kitchen, the enterprise is doing quite nicely.

The search for truth and justice and the destination it might lead us to

PHOTO: REUTERS The Lockerbie series that is available on TVNZ+ has recently introduced me to the tragic plane crash in 1988 in southwest Scotland. It's a heart-wrenching watch that reveals the devastation and pain that was inflicted upon so many, for so long. Throughout each episode, we follow Jim Swire, whose daughter died in the crash, as he engages in a relentless pursuit of truth and justice. The show draws out a longing for justice and truth. As I watched it, I found myself pulled along with Jim into a journey which seems to take him into the turbulent political realities that sweep our globe. Truth and justice can be complex matters. Lockerbie demonstrates this, to some extent. Revealing truth in one place can apparently cause carnage elsewhere — depending upon the secret moves and deals that might be afoot at any given time. So in a world like ours, shall we despair of ever fully knowing the truth? Although he struggles with this question, Jim nonetheless chooses to fight, with impressive fortitude, so that he may find the answers he's looking for. But what kind of "truth" is worth such disconnection, from family, self, future? What kind of justice locks you so firmly in the past that you miss the people who need you now, as well as new emerging opportunities for bringing flourishing and life? Jim's noble quest reveals a cruel irony. The reality is that his pursuit of the truth comes at a significant cost. In doing his work of justice-making and truth-seeking, he fails to grieve and he neglects to nurture those who love him and who he holds dear. The show brilliantly captures this tension. We want Jim to succeed, no doubt. The victims deserve the truth, the nations need accountability. But, is there a point when seeking the truth becomes its own form of blindness? Sadly, we come to see that in pursuing truth about his daughter's death, Jim increasingly isolates himself from his living family. As time goes on, other aspects of his life fray and fragment. Has he just wasted 20 years, fully by his own foolishness? As a Christian watching this, I'm struck by how Jim's dilemma shines a light on something profound about truth itself. Jesus, who claimed to be truth personified, pursued it through relationship, not despite it. Jesus embodied a different way to live. He spoke truth precisely because of his love for people, not despite loving them. He confronted religious leaders while dining with outcasts. Truth and relationship weren't competing values, they were deeply linked. I believe that Jesus carries a vision which weaves truth and justice together, with love as the binding cord. Relationships are the place where love is meant to flourish, starting with our connection with God, who makes us whole, moving into our relationships with one another, and extending outward in a growing circle of transformation. Like Jim, all of us can and should seize the initiative, seeking truth and justice in the places and communities we live in — and beyond. But we would be wise to realise that bold action alone is not enough. Truth is related to love, as Jim began to discover once again. We must live for the future, staying connected with the people around us. We must live, and love, and forgive, and begin again. This, too, is the work of Christ, the work of accepting, receiving and bringing new life. Jim's story challenges us. How do we pursue justice while staying present to those we love? Perhaps it starts small, like by speaking honestly in difficult conversations, standing up for someone who's being treated unfairly or simply choosing to listen deeply before rushing to judgement. Perhaps the key is pursuing these actions in ways that build rather than break relationships, recognising that sustained truth-telling requires sustained connection. The deepest truth might be this: we need both the courage to fight for what's right and the wisdom to do it in love, not despite it. And to what end? Truth and justice, bound together by a fierce love that will not be overcome. ■Tom Mepham is minister of Student Soul.
