Five Tequilas are finalists for the World's Best Blanco Tequila at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The SFWSC is among the world's largest and most prestigious spirit judging events. Consumers and the beverage industry closely follow its results. The Top Shelf 2025 Awards Gala, a highly anticipated whiskey industry event, will announce the winner on November 9 at Hotel Nikko in San Francisco. Below are brief backgrounds and tasting notes on the finalists.
The Tequila is crafted using traditional methods: stone/brick ovens for cooking, roller mill extraction, fermentation in stainless steel tanks without fibers, and double distillation in stainless pot stills with copper coils. The Tequila is rested for 15 days in stainless steel tanks before bottling to ensure a smooth palate.
On the nose, the Tequila offers aromas of cooked agave, citrus, herbal notes, and a hint of savory character. It's smooth and creamy on the palate, showcasing cooked and green agave, black pepper, subtle caramel, and a trace of earthiness. The finish is long and slightly sweet, with lingering spice notes.
Cutwater's Tequila is produced by Orendain, one of Mexico's well-known and historic family distillers. The label features a hand-drawn skull of a Rayador, a Black Skimmer sea bird, which reflects its maritime-inspired branding. Cutwater's Tequilas have been perennial medalists in international spirit competitions.
The Tequila presents cooked agave notes of caramel and butterscotch, alongside herbaceous hints of raw agave and cut grass on the nose. The palate exhibits pronounced sweet and caramel flavors of cooked agave. The finish is long and sweet, featuring lingering caramel and herbaceous notes.
An Australian-owned brand, Sesión Tequila is produced in Mexico under the supervision of master distiller Francisco Quijano.
The Tequila is light and fresh on the nose, with subtle cooked agave, caramel, and spice notes. It's sweet and herbaceous, featuring citrus, both cooked and raw agave, green pepper, and mint. The finish is long, with lingering white pepper notes.

Don Vicente Tequila is made at the El Pandillo Distillery in Jesús María in the Jalisco Highlands. Renowned Master Distiller Felipe Camarena crafts it. This high-proof Tequila showcases traditional and innovative production methods, resulting in a robust and flavorful spirit. With an ABV of 54%, it is just under the maximum of 55% ABV allowed for bottling Tequila.
The Tequila is aromatic and fruity on the nose, with a crisp, wet stone minerality. It features citrus zest, fresh apple, cooked agave notes of caramel and butterscotch, and herbaceous hints of raw agave. It's earthy and herbaceous on the palate, showcasing damp compost, wet moss/forest floor, chocolate, nuts, and assorted herbal and fruity notes. The finish is smooth, sweet, and fruity, with lingering notes of cooked agave.
The Tequila is produced from piñas sourced from the Lowlands (Tequila Valley) and Los Altos (Jalisco Highlands) regions. The Tequila claims to be additive-free, although the CRT doesn't recognize or certify this designation.
The Tequila has a fresh and crisp aroma, featuring a slight minerality, both cooked and green agave notes, some earthiness, and hints of tropical fruit and vanilla. The cooked agave notes are more prominent on the palate, accompanied by citrus and tropical fruits, a touch of anise/licorice, and a mild pepperiness. The finish is long and sweet, with lingering citrus, spice notes, and a hint of black pepper.
These Blanco Tequilas each present a distinct expression of agave craftsmanship, showcasing their respective distilleries' diverse production and sourcing methods. Jennifer 'Jen' Sh'reyan Photos: PARAMOUNT+ Fast Facts Jennifer 'Jen' Sh'reyan (Lauren Lapkus) is an ensign aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos on Star Trek: Lower Decks. Initially, she is a background character. She can be spotted in the Cerritos bar in Season 1's 'Envoys.' Later in the season, in 'Cupid's Errant Arrow,' she is unceremoniously shoved aside by Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome). Jen continued to appear in the background throughout the first season. This includes taking part in the Chu Chu Dance at the Zebulon Sister's Concert in 'Cupid's Errant Arrow.' And in the Lower Decks Season 2 premiere, 'Strange Energies,' she confronted Mariner on the holodeck. On the occasion, she also stated that she exercised by taking part in yoga. In this episode, she grows annoyed while waiting for Bradward Boimler (Jack Quaid) to get his food from the Cerritos bar replicator. In Season 2's 'The Spy Humongous,' Jen was seen to be a part of the 'Redshirts' club. Other members of the club included Ensigns Casey (Neil Casey), Taylor (Fred Tatasciore) and Jen's friend Castro (Gabrielle Ruiz). And in the episode, Boimler joined as well. The club's purpose was to help one another gain promotions to a higher rank, with the goal of reaching captaincy. However, after Boimler set an example by rescuing D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) from her transformation into a giant praying mantis, the Redshirts club was disbanded. 'Jariner' In the Lower Decks Season 2 finale, 'First First Contact,' Jen's relationship with Mariner reached a new plateau. This takes place as the Cerritos is undertaking a high-stakes mission to traverse the Laaperian debris field, which requires the bridge viewscreen to be removed. An impact against the ship causes Mariner to fall through the open viewscreen and into space. Fortunately, a fast-acting Jen is able to seize her before she drifts too far away. Later in the episode, Mariner and Jen reunite in the Cerritos bar. After apologizing for the way they've treated one another for the past year, they each admit that they have feelings for one another. Soon Mariner is introducing Jen to the rest of Beta Shift. In the episode 'Mining the Mind's Mines,' we get several hints that their relationship is growing more serious. And later in the season, in 'Hear All, Trust Nothing,' Jen invites Mariner to one of Castro's 'salons.' At first, Mariner goes to great lengths to be on her best behavior. But when Jen reveals she had hoped Mariner would raise hell with her friends, Mariner obliges. However, 'Jariner' was not meant to last. In the Season 3 episode 'Trusted Sources,' Mariner is transferred to Starbase 80 after being falsely accused of spreading malicious rumours about the Cerritos crew. When Mariner appeals to Jen, Jen refuses to believe Mariner is innocent of the charges. However, it seemed as though Jen might be receptive to making amends with Mariner in the Season 3 finale, 'The Stars At Night.' But this was curtailed by Mariner's disinterest in speaking with Jen. The Real Deal Jen is the real deal. In the Season 5 episode 'The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel,' it is revealed that Jen has been transferred to the U.S.S. Manitoba. Jen states that this Parliament class ship is crewed entirely by Andorians, and suggests that it could be a good place for her earn her long-desired promotion. But before she is transferred, Jen joins Mariner on a final mission. While initially confused, Mariner eventually comes to realize she never spoke with Jen about the breakup. When Mariner finally confronts Jen about the situation, Jen admits that her behavior was a subterfuge to get back at Mariner for silently breaking up with her. By the end of the episode, Mariner and Jen have made amends with one another. And Jen is delighted that Mariner is the first ex with whom she's managed to maintain a friendship. Why She Matters Why does Jen matter? In fitting with the theme of Lower Decks as a whole, she shows us that everyone has their own story, even the 'side characters.' She demonstrates that we can achieve our dreams, even if it's a long road getting from there to here. And she proves that women don't have to be flawless in order to find romance or succeed in the workplace. So, be like Jen. Stick with your friends while working towards shared goals, but don't be afraid to walk away if you aren't getting the results you want. Try to work on communication with those closest to you, even if you face some stumbling blocks along the way. And always remember: even the nastiest breakup doesn't have to be the end of our story. As Mister Romantic, John C. Reilly Just Wants to Spread Love
John C. Reilly has been a staple of Paul Thomas Anderson's films, starred in serious and satirical biopics, made a legend of a man-child stepbrother, and was nominated for an Oscar in 2003 for his haunting turn as Amos — 'Mister Cellophane' — in 'Chicago.' But the character closest to him just might be a know-nothing who emerges, openhearted and singing, from a box. For the past three years, Reilly, 60, has performed as Mister Romantic, a retro crooner who just wants to find everlasting love. A vaudeville-esque act of his own creation with mostly American songbook numbers — 'What'll I Do,' 'Dream' — and a backing band, it's a quasi-improvised set that has him interacting with the audience in a way that's sometimes wryly funny, sometimes tender and sad, but always sincere. Connection, of any kind, is the point. After a series of sold-out shows in Los Angeles, Reilly is taking his persona on the road, to Cafe Carlyle starting Wednesday. And he is releasing a concept album, 'What's Not to Love?,' his renditions of classics and more, on Friday. His alter ego's origins are deep-seated. 'I've been a romantic person my whole life,' Reilly said. 'My mother would play these standards on the player piano at our house, and I would sing along.' It was 'Mister Cellophane' that reawakened in him, he said, an appreciation for a bygone era of theatricality. He finished shooting the HBO series 'Winning Time,' about the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, on a Friday, 'and on Monday night, I had my first Mister Romantic show,' he said. How Jon Bernthal Became Hollywood's Most Dependable Bruiser
When Jon Bernthal was cast as a petty drug dealer in 'The Wolf of Wall Street,' Martin Scorsese's 2013 white-collar crime epic, the actor wasn't even supposed to have many lines. But Bernthal went into that film intending to take his shot. So he came in for a wordless B-roll scene in which the script had him lifting weights in a backyard, asked the second-unit director to mic him and riffed for 45 minutes. Scorsese wasn't there that day, but here's what he saw in the footage: a shirtless Bernthal curling dumbbells, tormenting some teenage boys with a baseball bat and peacocking his virility. 'Bring some of them chicks around here sometime,' he says. Then Bernthal makes a brilliant little decision about his tough guy's whereabouts. 'Hey, Ma, we got chicken or what?' he yells toward the house. 'Ma!' There was no 'Ma' in the script. No one even said he lived with his mother. The role introduced Bernthal as an excellent character actor. Since then, he has become the guy who shows up onscreen unexpectedly, delivers the most memorable performance in a scene or two and then vanishes. This is perhaps why he's so often playing dead men in flashbacks. He's the dramatic center of gravity in FX's 'The Bear,' appearing just once or twice per season as the deceased family patriarch, and the tragic romantic in the 2017 Taylor Sheridan film 'Wind River.' Bernthal was so good in 'The Accountant,' an improbable 2016 Ben Affleck-led movie about an autistic accountant turned gunslinger, that the filmmakers made this year's sequel a two-hander. Bernthal has had leading roles too, most notably in 'We Own This City,' the HBO miniseries about Baltimore police corruption in which the actor's performance was criminally overlooked. But for the most part, he has carved out a career of supporting roles. So it made perfect sense when he told me that one of his favorite movies is 'True Romance,' Tony Scott's 1993 adaptation of Quentin Tarantino's first script. Christian Slater may have been the lead, but it was the supporting characters played by Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt and Dennis Hopper who stole the film. 'There are so many people who are in it for a scene or two,' Bernthal said, 'but you could have made a movie about any one of those characters.' We were having breakfast in Ojai, Calif., where Bernthal lives. The previous day, he returned from New York where he was promoting 'The Accountant 2.' Before that he was in Greece and Morocco, filming a role in 'The Odyssey' with Christopher Nolan, which is perhaps the greatest honor that can be bestowed on a dramatic actor these days. In front of him was a pile of egg whites, spinach, fruit and gluten-free toast. 'I'm like a gorilla,' he said. 'I eat a lot.' Most actors, once they get lead roles, are advised to turn down anything smaller. But Bernthal is allergic to strategizing about how to become a leading man or listening to agents and managers who want to find him a 'star vehicle.' The only real mistake he made in his career, he told me, happened because he let that sort of thinking get in his head. But he has switched agents since then. He knows he has become the guy who everyone calls for a favor, but then again 'The Bear' was a favor. And that turned into one of the most rewarding experiences of Bernthal's career. The intensity he brought to the role won him an Emmy, and now he has even co-written an episode in the upcoming season. 'I can't imagine deciding what you're going to do in this super-tenuous field while being so dependent on some businessman's strategy,' he said.
