AD Ports Group opens Islamabad office, expanding its strategic presence in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD (WAM)AD Ports Group officially launched its first representative office in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, marking a significant milestone in the Group's international growth journey and its long-term commitment to enabling trade and logistics across South and Central Asia.Complimenting the Group's global network of more than 140 offices, and strategically located in close proximity to Pakistan's key federal ministries, regulatory bodies, and state-owned enterprises, the new office will serve as a critical platform for deepening engagement with government stakeholders and advancing priority infrastructure and trade initiatives. As a client-facing and administrative hub, the Islamabad office will also support ongoing operations and facilitate strategic partnerships in the ports, maritime, logistics, and industrial development sectors.The inauguration ceremony was attended from Pakistan's side by Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs; Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, Federal Minister for Railways; Jam Kamal, Federal Minister for Commerce; Attaullah Tarrar, Federal Minister of Information and Broadcasting; Khalid Hussain Magsi, Federal Minister for Science and Technology.Also in attendance were Hamad Obaid Al Zaabi, the UAE Ambassador in Pakistan; Abdulaziz Zayed Al Shamsi, Regional CEO, AD Ports Group; AbdulAziz Al Balooshi, Regional CEO, AD Ports Group, and other senior officials, reflecting the depth of the bilateral relationship and shared vision for long-term economic cooperation.The opening of the Islamabad office follows a series of high-impact investments by AD Ports Group in Pakistan, including US$295 million committed towards the development and enhancement of container, bulk, and general cargo terminals at Karachi Port's East Wharf. The Group has already made strategic inroads into key markets along this corridor, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Georgia.In 2022, AD Ports Group entered the Pakistani market through a landmark 50-year concession to develop and operate container terminal berths 6–10 at Karachi Port's East Wharf, in partnership with Kaheel Terminals. This was followed by a second 50-year concession signed in 2023 to develop and manage berths 11–17 for general and bulk cargo. Through its operating entity, Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTL), the Group has introduced world-class operational systems, advanced equipment, and global best practices to significantly enhance terminal productivity, reduce vessel dwell times, and increase cargo throughput.These enhancements have elevated Karachi Port's standing as a key logistics hub, boosting the resilience and competitiveness of Pakistan's export infrastructure and contributing to the country's economic diversification agenda.In parallel, AD Ports Group has signed several high-level agreements aimed at expanding its integrated logistics and digital trade ecosystem in Pakistan. Apple to announce new $100bn investment in US manufacturing
Apple was set to announce plans on Wednesday to invest another $100 billion in US manufacturing, as the iPhone maker seeks to avoid President Donald Trump's tariffs. The new commitment would bring its total pledge to invest in the US to $600 billion over the next four years. The company pledged in February to invest $500 billion and hire 20,000 workers. The investment was also expected to include moving towards assembling more critical components in the US, Reuters reported, quoting a White House official. The announcement comes after Mr Trump threatened to hit the Big Tech giant with a 25 per cent tariff for making its flagship devices outside the US. Apple shares were 5.91 per cent higher at $214.92 during afternoon trading. In the company's earnings call last week, Apple chief Tim Cook told investors that it had taken a hit of about $800 million from tariff-related costs last quarter and about $1.1 billion this quarter. Mr Cook told analysts during the call that the 'vast majority' of iPhones sold in the US come from India. Most other Apple products such as MacBooks and iPads that are sold in the US are made in Vietnam, he said. 'We obviously try to optimise our supply chain,' Mr Cook said at the time. 'And ultimately, we will do more in the United States.' Apple had planned this year to switch its assembly for all US-destined iPhones from China to India to avoid the escalatory tariffs Mr Trump had placed on Beijing. During his visit to Qatar this year, Mr Trump said there was 'a little problem' with Apple and recalled a conversation he had with Mr Cook in which the President said he did not want the company building in India. India has lately been in Mr Trump's crosshairs. The President on Wednesday imposed a 25 per cent tariff on New Delhi for buying Russian oil. The new tariff, due to take effect in three weeks, comes on top of a previously announced 25 per cent tariff that was set to be implemented on Wednesday. Mr Trump has accused the country of indirectly or directly buying Russian oil. India condemned the latest action as 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable'. UAE backs global initiatives toboost sustainable development
Suhail Bin Mohammed Faraj Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) and Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to Turkmenistan, led the UAE delegation participating in the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, which opened on August 5th in Awaza, Turkmenistan, and runs until 8th August. Al Mazrouei affirmed that the United Arab Emirates' participation in the conference is part of its established approach in supporting global development efforts. He emphasised that the UAE's involvement reflects its commitment to backing international initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development, achieving regional economic integration, and providing advanced infrastructure that enables countries to overcome geographical challenges and bring prosperity to their peoples. He expressed hope that the conference would contribute to building effective partnerships, the exchange of expertise, and the opening of new horizons for investment and shared growth. The UN conference, which is held once every ten years, aims to highlight the development challenges faced by Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), home to approximately 570 million people. It explores ways to enhance international partnerships, encourage smart investments, facilitate free movement of transport, and establish more flexible and efficient trade corridors. The four-day conference will discuss the Awaza Programme of Action (APoA) for Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) for the Decade 2024-2034, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 24th December 2024. In order to drive transformative growth, the PoA is built around five interlinked priority areas that together address the challenges LLDCs face and create opportunities for sustainable development: Structural Transformation and Science, Technology, and Innovation; Trade, Trade Facilitation, and Regional Integration; Transit, Transport, and Connectivity; Enhancing Adaptive Capacity, Strengthening Resilience, and Reducing Vulnerability and Implementation, Follow-Up, and Monitoring. On the sidelines of the conference, Al Mazrouei held a series of bilateral meetings with Rashid Meredov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan; and Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Türkiye. The meetings discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the fields of energy, infrastructure, and transportation, to serve mutual interests. Meanwhile in February, 2025, Suhail Bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and the Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to the Republic of Indonesia, led a high-level delegation on an official visit to Indonesia from January 29 to February 1. During the visit, the minister held meetings with senior Indonesian officials to explore ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors, aiming to advance relations to a level that reflects the aspirations of the leadership of both friendly nations. Accompanying Al Mazrouei during the visit was Abdullah Salem Al Dhaheri, the UAE Ambassador to Indonesia and the non-resident Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of East Timor, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). At the beginning of the visit, Al Mazrouei was received by Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, at his residence in Jakarta. The meeting discussed mechanisms to further strengthen joint cooperation in various fields, as the UAE-Indonesian relations have evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership across political, economic, investment, trade, and cultural sectors. For his part, the Indonesian President expressed his pleasure in welcoming the UAE delegation and emphasised Indonesia's interest in further developing relations with the UAE in areas that serve the mutual interests of both nations. It was agreed by both sides to continue cementing bilateral cooperation and accelerating the finalisation of bilateral agreements and joint ventures in preparation for their approval between the two countries. During the visit, Al Mazrouei and the accompanying delegation also met with several Indonesian ministers and officials, including Agus Harimurti, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development; Sugiono, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Sri Mulyani, Minister of Finance; Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Head of the Housing Task Force; Rosan Roeslani Minister of Investment; and Ridha Wirakusumah, the Chief Executive Officer at Indonesia Investment Authority, in addition to other senior officials. These meetings discussed the progress of joint investment projects and initiatives, as well as additional opportunities in sectors of mutual interest. The UAE minister also chaired the third UAE-Indonesia roundtable meeting, while Sugiuno, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, chaired the Indonesian side. The meeting was organised by the UAE Embassy in Jakarta at the Raffles Hotel and was attended by ministers, deputy ministers, CEOs, and representatives from several Emirati and Indonesian companies, including Etihad Airways, Emirates Airlines, Abu Dhabi Ports, Tabreed, Masdar, Mubadala, Borouge, ADNOC, Edge, First Abu Dhabi Bank, Emirates Global Aluminium, IFFCO, Alef Education, and Elsewedy Electric. The discussions focused on investment and economic cooperation in priority sectors for both countries, including conventional and renewable energy, aviation, ports and logistics, infrastructure, mining, cooling technology, strategic industries, defense, food security, construction and housing, banking, and education. The participants also addressed challenges faced by UAE companies investing in Indonesia and explored solutions to facilitate the smooth implementation of joint projects and initiatives. At the conclusion of the visit, Al Mazrouei and the accompanying delegation met with Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Chairman of the National Economic Council of Indonesia; Airlangga Hartarto, Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs; Zulkifli Hasan, Coordinating Minister for Food; and Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia; along with a number of other high-ranking officials. OpenAI to provide ChatGPT Enterprise 'essentially at no cost' for US federal workforce
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said his company was partnering with the US government to make the ChatGPT Enterprise version available to the federal workforce 'at essentially no cost'. The company said the partnership was in line with President Donald Trump's recently announced AI Action Plan, which seeks to bolster the US lead in the global race for artificial intelligence dominance. Federal agencies that decide to participate in the partnership will be able to use ChatGPT Enterprise 'for the nominal cost of $1 per agency for the next year'. OpenAI describes ChatGPT Enterprise as containing some of the company's 'best AI models and capabilities', and says that it is used by more than three million people. Target, Lowes, JetBlue, Bain & Company, T-Mobile and Amgen are listed as ChatGPT Enterprise clients. 'By giving government employees access to powerful, secure AI tools, we can help them solve problems for more people, faster,' a statement from the San Francisco-based company read. The partnership with the US government is the latest move among technology companies seeking to gain an upper hand in the competitive US AI landscape. Although research on AI began in the 1960s, recent advancements in computer processing power, coupled with iterations of AI solutions such as ChatGPT in 2022, led to an explosion of interest, investments and start-ups in the tech ecosystem. Companies like Alphabet, Anthropic, DeepSeek and Claude, among others, are all vying for industry dominance. As to government partnerships, OpenAI is pursuing similar deals around the world. In May, brief negotiations took place between the UAE and OpenAI that might eventually lead to the company's ChatGPT Plus AI chatbot being available to all residents free of charge, though a final deal has not been reached.
