Busch hits a 3-run homer, Shaw adds a solo shot as the Cubs rout the Cardinals 9-1
After getting shut out 5-0 in Friday's series opener, the Cubs built a six-run lead against Andre Pallante (6-9) by the second inning.
Colin Rea (9-5) allowed one run in six innings, and Carson Kelly and Dansby Swanson each had three of Chicago's 13 hits.
Busch set the tone by leading off the game with a double into the corner in right field, then scoring on Kyle Tucker's RBI single. Tucker scored when right-fielder Jordan Walker's throw got away from Willson Contreras, the cut-off man, on Kelly's single.
In the second inning, Busch made it 5-0 by hitting his 22nd homer of the season — his sixth in eight games against St. Louis this season.
Busch hit four home runs during a three-game stretch when the Cardinals visited Wrigley Field last month, but he'd hit only three more in 25 games since.
Pallante allowed six runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings, his shortest outing in 53 career starts. He was pulled after Seiya Suzuki doubled and scored on Kelly's RBI single.
Shaw tripled home Swanson in the third and added a 395-foot solo homer in the fifth that made it 9-0.
Lars Nootbaar doubled and scored the lone St. Louis run on Alec Burleson's sixth-inning groundout.
The Cardinals played without All-Star second baseman Brendan Donovan, a late scratch due to left groin tightness, and Contreras was removed from the game after an infield single in the sixth.

After Pallante allowed a single to Swanson and walked Shaw despite getting ahead 0-2, catcher Yohel Pozo visited the mound. Busch drove Pallante's next pitch 374 feet into the stands in right field for a 5-0 Cubs lead.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left shoulder. The move, retroactive to Monday, comes after the left-hander reported shoulder discomfort before Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox. 'It's (a) punch in the gut,' manager Joe Espada said. 'But … he's seeing doctors right now. We're getting more tests done and hopefully this is not going to be a long-term thing.' Espada added that they don't yet know the severity of the injury and should know more after additional testing. Cubs reinstate catcher Miguel Amaya and right-hander Javier Assad from the 60-day IL
TORONTO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have reinstated catcher Miguel Amaya and right-hander Javier Assad from the 60-day injured list. Chicago also optioned right-hander Nate Pearson to Triple-A Iowa and designated infielder Jon Berti for assignment in moves announced before Tuesday's game at Toronto. Assad was slated to start the series opener against the AL East-leading Blue Jays. The 26-year-old Amaya had been on the injured list since May 25 with a left oblique strain. He hit .280 with four homers and 25 RBIs in 27 games prior to the injury. The addition of Amaya gives Chicago three catchers on its active roster. The Cubs also have Carson Kelly and Reese McGuire behind the plate. Assad had been sidelined by a left oblique strain. The 28-year-old is 14-11 with a 3.40 ERA in 70 major league appearances, including 47 starts. Pearson went 0-1 with a 9.20 ERA in 11 games across three stints with the Cubs this season. Cardinals seek to climb in wild-card race, send Rockies to ninth loss in a row

They will continue their bid for a National League wild-card berth when they host the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night in the second contest of a three-game series. The Cardinals rallied for a 3-2 victory Monday night on Brendan Donovan's two-run pinch double in the eighth inning. St. Louis has won four of its past five games to move within three games of the New York Mets for the final wild-card slot. 'We're going to take out shot every night and we're going to have fun doing it,' Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. 'There's a lot of belief in that clubhouse,' Donovan told the FanDuel Sports Network. 'No matter the circumstances, we're going to show up, we're going to prepare, and then we're going to play hard. That's baseball. Just like anything, there's ups and there's downs, but it's how you show up and respond. That's what we're trying to do.' Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar will be questionable to play Tuesday after exiting Monday's game with a left knee contusion. Donovan's availability to play in the field also is in question as he continues to recover from a left groin strain. With Colorado scheduled to start left-handed pitchers the next two games, right-hand hitting outfielder Jordan Walker is expected to play a key role in the St. Louis offense. After hitting .210 through June 22, Walker went on the injured list with appendicitis and used his rehab stint in the minors to retool his swing. Walker hit .304 in July with an .807 OPS, and he is hitting 9-for-28 so far in August. The Cardinals on Tuesday will start left-hander Matthew Liberatore (6-9, 3.98 ERA), who failed to complete five innings in his past three starts -- due in part to poor support in the field. Liberatore allowed nine runs in 12 2/3 innings in those games, but only four of those runs were earned. He is 0-0 with a 2.45 ERA in four career starts against the Rockies. The Rockies will turn to left-hander Kyle Freeland (2-12, 5.53) as they try to snap an eight-game losing streak. Freeland should be back to full strength after pitching through illness in previous start, a 20-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. He allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings. Interim Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer praised Freeland for giving his depleted team some innings, given his health. '(Freeland) was clearly still battling fatigue, clearly,' Schaeffer said after the game. 'He gave us all he had. He battled through that game. I don't think he was quite over the sickness. It was continuing to take a toll. That's not an excuse. ... I'm saying how it is. 'But I thought he competed well. In general, (he was) missing over the plate, happened throughout the game. I mean it's a good-hitting team. They hit some good pitches too. They hit some good pitches off Freeland.' Freeland is 0-3 with a 5.45 ERA in seven career games against the Cardinals.
