In new threat to U.K.'s Labour, former leader Corbyn in talks to start new party
The former leader of Britain's Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, announced on Friday (July 4, 2025) he was in talks to start a new political party because Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government had "refused to deliver the change" voters expected during its first year in office. Mr. Corbyn, an avowed socialist who took control of the party in 2015, was its most left-wing leader in a generation, with plans for a sweeping programme of nationalisation. He resigned as Labour leader after the 2019 election when the party suffered its worst defeat since 1935. Labour subsequently suspended Mr. Corbyn in 2020 and then expelled him from the party following a report into how complaints about antisemitism in the party were handled under his leadership. Mr. Corbyn's plans to create a new political party could further divide Labour's traditional left-wing support at a time when the prime minister is haemorrhaging support and the century-long dominance of Britain's two big parties is in jeopardy. "The democratic foundation of a new kind of political party will take shape soon," Mr. Corbyn said on X. "Discussions are ongoing - and I am excited to work alongside all communities to fight for the future people deserve." The announcement that Labour could face a new threat from a left came after the party suffered its most bruising week in government when it was forced to abandon key planks of planned welfare reform, which blew a hole in its budget plans. Since comfortably beating the Conservatives in a general election a year ago, Mr. Starmer has seen his personal popularity slump. Labour now also consistently trails the insurgent, right-wing Reform UK party, which is led by pro-Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage. When voters were asked what Labour's biggest achievement had been since winning the election, the most common answer was "nothing", polling firm More In Common said on Friday. A new left-wing party led by Mr. Corbyn would win 10% of the vote, reducing Labour's share from 23% to 20%, the same polling company said last week. Mr. Corbyn, who was elected as an independent member of parliament last year, said the "Labour government has refused to deliver the change people expected and deserved". On Thursday evening, lawmaker Zarah Sultana said she was quitting the Labour Party and planned to launch the new party with Corbyn. Mr. Corbyn congratulated Sultana on Friday on her "principled decision" to quit Labour and said he was delighted she will "help build us a real alternative".

Starmer Reveals How "Good Relationship" With Trump Helped Him Secure A Deal
Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has said that despite "different political backgrounds" he has found common ground with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Speaking to BBC Radio 4, on the first anniversary of the Labour government coming to power, he said that it was "in the national interest" for the two men to connect. "Building those relationships with international leaders is hugely important," he said. "We are different people and we've got different political backgrounds and leanings, but we do have a good relationship and that comes from a number of places," he said. He also said that he "understands what anchors the president", and "what he really cares about". He added, "For both of us, we really care about family and there's a point of connection there." He also revealed that Trump reached out to him to offer him his consolation after the death of his younger brother Nick Starmer on Boxing Day. He also said that before this call, the last time they had spoken was when Trump was shot at a rally in July last year. "That was a phone call really to ask him how it was, and in particular I wanted to know how it impacted on his family," he said. He also said that the personal relation with Trump had helped him secure a deal by removing UK industries from some of the sweeping tariffs announced by Trump. He also cited how his discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron "over a glass of wine" on a train to Kyiv had made the foundation for a new agreement with the EU, which he said would lead to lower food prices in British supermarkets. "That is a good thing for millions of people across the country," he said.

And across the political establishment, from Farage to Starmer, they smear people of conscience by trying to stop a genocide in Gaza as terrorists. But the truth is clear: this government is an active participant in genocide. And the British people oppose it," Sultana, who is now Independent Coventry South MP, accused in the post."We're not an island of strangers," she said, referencing a speech given by the UK Prime Minister in May about immigration, which he has since said he regrets. And she says at the next election, "the choice will be stark: socialism or barbarism," BBC to a report in the Daily Mail, the name of the new party has not been decided yet, with options mooted including "Real Change" and "Peace and Justice Project".Corbyn, who led the Labour Party between 2015 and 2020, has been hinting strongly that he wants to form a new party — with polls suggesting it could attract 10% of the left-wing vote and inflict major damage on Labour, The Daily Mail an interview on Wednesday, the 76-year-old claimed there was a "thirst" among voters "for an alternative view to be put".Since his suspension from Labour Party in 2020 for minimising the party's anti-Semitism issues during his leadership, Corbyn has served as the independent MP for Islington was expelled last year but retained his seat in the general HAS ALWAYS TAKEN A VERY DIFFERENT VIEW FROM PARTY: COOPERResponding to the former Labour MP's announcement, UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said Sultana "has always taken a very different view to most people in the government on a lot of different things, and that's for her to do so," The Independent to Sultana's announcement, John McDonnell posted on social media, "I am dreadfully sorry to lose Zarah from the Labour Party. The people running Labour at the moment need to ask themselves why a young, articulate, talented, extremely dedicated socialist feels she now has no home in the Labour Party and has to leave."advertisementAccording to the BBC report, McDonnell might not be joining the new party.- Ends
