Eric Dane Broke Down Over ALS Diagnosis
For context, Eric is 52 and shares two teenage daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine, with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart. Rebecca filed for divorce from Eric in 2018, although in March — a month before his ALS diagnosis was made public — she requested to dismiss her petition.
ALS, which is sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease or motor neurone disease, is a rare neurodegenerative illness that impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing progressive paralysis of the muscles. The disease — for which there is currently no cure — causes people to gradually lose the ability to walk, speak, eat, and breathe independently, although it notably does not impact a person's thinking ability.
The life expectancy after a person is diagnosed with ALS can vary between cases; however, according to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, most people with the disease are expected to live for three to five years after diagnosis. That said, everyone's experience with ALS is unique, and some people go on to live for decades.
When announcing his diagnosis, Eric expressed gratitude that he's currently in a position to continue working, saying that he's 'looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria,' which is currently shooting its long-awaited third season.
Eric stars in the Emmy-winning HBO series as Cal Jacobs, the father of Nate Jacobs, who is played by Jacob Elordi.
Now, in a teaser for an upcoming interview with Diane Sawyer for Good Morning America, the actor has given an emotional update on his situation, saying: 'I wake up every day and I'm immediately reminded that this is happening. It's not a dream.'
At one point in the 30-second teaser, Eric and Diane hold hands as he looks visibly emotional. 'I don't think this is the end of my story. I don't feel like this is the end of me,' he says.
Towards the end of the clip, while presumably discussing the immediate aftermath of his diagnosis, Diane asks who the first person was that he called, prompting Eric to break down in tears.
The GMA segment — which airs on Monday — marks Eric's first TV interview since his diagnosis. It comes after he spoke with Variety about the future of his career, saying he feels 'pretty capable' as far as acting is concerned.
'With real respect, I really don't want to talk about it. I made the announcement. That's what's going on with me; it's very personal to me,' he said when asked about his diagnosis. 'I am ready and willing to do just about anything, but I have limitations that I understand will preclude me from playing certain roles. I'm working on Euphoria. I finished Countdown. As far as that goes, I'm pretty capable.'

Nick (Jack Wagner) meets up with his boat manager, who promises that the boat will be ready for his 'special plans' the following day. Taylor (Rebecca Budig) gets a text from Ridge saying they've arrived. Donna (Jennifer Gareis) says Italy is one of her favorite places to be. But she misses her Honeybear, and Taylor misses Ridge, too. Finn (Tanner Novlan) sees Li (Naomi Matsuda) walking by his office, and she has a box with her. She tells him she's taking a leave of absence for a while. Finn reminds her that she loves working, so he wants to know what's really going on. Li says that everything that happened with Luna took a toll, and she needs some time. Donna and Taylor study pictures of their loved ones and wish they were there. Taylor says they'll be there on the next trip when it's not all about business. Taylor wonders if Nick will be crashing the party, and Donna admits she hasn't heard Nick's name in a long time. Taylor says he's taking over Marone Industries, taking over the whole fleet. They marvel at how he washed up on shore and changed their lives. They both remember the Shady Marlin, the boat where Nick and Brooke were married. Donna wonders if they could have a future again. She doesn't know how her sister is feeling about him. While she wants her sister to be happy, she knows Ridge is the only man who can make her happy. 'Sorry,' she adds. At the hotel, Brooke is welcomed to the town in front of excited onlookers. At the dock, Nick tells his boat manager that he has a special date planned. His manager says that if you kiss your partner while going under the rocks, your love will last forever. 'That's the plan,' Nick agrees. There's a rooftop reception for the Forrester team while they wait for their room. 'Let the magic of Italy begin,' Eric says. Finn asks if Li needs help moving out of her office, and he wonders why she didn't mention it. Is she unhappy at the hospital? Li says it's time to step away for a bit, then she pivots to ask about Steffy taking some time away, too. 'At least it's only temporary,' she says. Finn knows Steffy will be home, after Luna almost made it so that he'd never see her again. Li frowns. Donna marvels that Nick could be in Naples at the same time, and she asks Taylor if she's sure he'll be there. Taylor says Brooke keeps forgetting that Ridge is engaged, which leads Donna to see that Taylor is hoping Nick shows up to keep Brooke busy and away from Ridge. There's a problem with the boat, which means Nick is having trouble getting his plans in motion. He looks up and sees Brooke on the rooftop. 'Let the fun begin,' he says. Eric addresses the crowd, telling everyone that they're going to have a wonderful time in Naples. Finn asks how long Li will be away and whether she'll be in town. Li hasn't figured it all out. She's focused on getting some rest and reading a book. Finn can't believe she's taking a vacation on a whim, to which Li says it's more than time. She grabs her things and leaves, adding there's something she needs to do that she should have done a long time ago. Donna says Brooke has more class than Taylor gives her credit for. Donna reminds her that Ridge and Nick don't get along at all, but she has to admit that Nick is 'quite the romantic.' Taylor hopes he pulls out all the stops, and she knows they would make a great couple. Donna jokes that Taylor bought the plane ticket for Nick herself. Ridge is looking out over the water when he sees a Marone boat. He joins Brooke, who is talking to some fans about their inspiration. They take a picture together, then Ridge excuses himself. Eric goes over the details of his plan for Capri with his intern. Brooke is looking at the marina when Nick walks up. 'Ciao, bella!' he says. Li walks into her apartment, which is full of medical supplies. The box she was carrying was also full of supplies. She pulls a curtain and there's an IV stand, which she adjusts. Then she looks at her patient. It's Luna (Lisa Yamada), only now she's blonde. Li looks concerned. Taylor explains that Nick came to her for advice on Brooke. It shouldn't be that confusing, given that Taylor is wearing an engagement ring. She truly wants what's best for Brooke, which Donna points out is a relationship with Nick, not Ridge. 'Ridge has moved on,' Taylor says, adding that they're planning their wedding. She suggests that Donna get on board the Nick-Brooke reunion, but Donna says that Nick isn't Brooke's first choice. Taylor says if Brooke wants happiness, it has to be with Nick. Brooke is thrilled to see Nick and says she might be able to squeeze him in. He's not taking no for an answer. In a candid interview in this week's cover story, the wrestler-actor, 48, gets vulnerable about a topic most shy away from: hair loss. He admits he started taking his hair health seriously after a push from his WWE fans. "They've held me accountable. They don't let you get away with phoning it in, because they'll eat you alive," he says. "That's what a good support system does." 'As I was trying to hide my hair loss, the audience was bringing it to light," he continues. "I saw their signs that said 'The bald John Cena.' They pushed me into going to see what my options were and actually do some homework to learn about scalp health, hair health, follicle health. I now have a routine: red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, shampoo, conditioner and I also got a hair transplant." He's quick to clarify he doesn't consider anything the fans did as "bullying." "Just like a good friend, when you have something in your teeth, they pull you aside and are like, 'You have something in your teeth,' " he says. Cena loves his new look but only has one regret: "I hate the fact that if there wasn't so much shame around it, I'd have gotten it done 10 years ago," he says. "I thought I was alone, but seven or eight out of 10 [men] suffer from thinning or baldness." He pauses to remark how 'fired up' he gets about the topic. "They don't do anything except move your hair, one by one, from one area to another. It's my hair and I'm not using this stuff [on the side] and I'd like to put it up [on the top]," he says. "If somebody's going to sweat me for that, I don't think there's any shame in that. It completely changed the course of my life.' After his surgery in November, he notes there was a tough period when progress was slow to show. "I came back for the [WWE] retirement tour starting in January — these are the deets you guys don't know — there's what's called a dormant phase, where the little hair [that was left] falls asleep and the new hair falls asleep. So boy, do you get bald," he says. "And January, February, early March was my dormant phase. And boy, did [the fans] let me have it. So every day I knew I went out there with so much more of a bald spot. It was not easy." He still has about five or six months in his growth cycle until he'll fully praise his doctor publicly, but he's passionate about sharing his story in the hopes that it helps others. "There's definitely a lot of folks out there that are wearing that blanket of shame where, man, maybe you don't want to shave your head. And if this resonates with anybody out there and they're like, 'Man, I'd like to research that too,' then cool. Maybe we have curbed the shame and the guilt about somebody wanting to correct themselves." He's also appreciative his new look will give him more range as an actor. "A different hairstyle can identify a part that can get me more work, do the thing I love to do," he says. "So I can continue to follow my passion just by moving [my hair] up here." He's equally passionate about sun safety — he revealed his past skin cancer diagnosis in March and recently had his third spot removed. 'I know, eventually, we're all going to close our book, but if a little bit of sunscreen and a little bit of minoxidil, some vitamins, is going to keep me feeling pretty good and keep my health — those are good things,' he says. 'I love life, and I got love in my life, and I want to keep all that stuff.' The love in his life these days includes wife Shay Shariatzadeh, an engineer he met while watching the Super Bowl in Vancouver in 2019. 'My health and my dedication to my partner are the tip of my spear in life right now," he says. Fans can still see Cena hitting the WWE ring ahead of his retirement by the end of the year. He's also reprising his role as Peacemaker in season 2 of the hit HBO Max show of the same name, premiering Aug. 21. 'It's a great show that's more than just action. It's a love story.
