Rangers 0-2 Fenerbahce (3-2 pens): Analysis

BBC News13-03-2025

Tension, drama, nerves, this Europa League second leg tie wasn't for the faint hearted. At the end of the second half, it looked like there was only going to be one winner as Fenerbache headed into extra time on top. But Rangers dug deep and they found a renewed energy for much of extra time. The nerves during the spot kicks were something else but Rangers and Jack Butland were equal to the pressurised task. Rangers did make life hard for themselves though, given their lead from the first leg, and how they played for the majority of the first half of this one, they allowed Fenerbahce back into this tie and the visitors' confidence only grew. Their goal just before half-time gave them a huge boost, there's no question about that. It had the opposite effect on Rangers. The visitors came out for the second 45 firing on all cylinders, piling on the pressure. Rangers, on the other hand, lost their confidence and their dominance. For the majority of the first half they played with energy and intent, their failure to score from decent positions though was an issue, and it almost came back to haunt them. When Fenerbahce grabbed their second goal of the night, it was deserved, they were the better side and left Rangers' Europa League hopes hanging by a thread. The equaliser set up a tense watch for the Rangers fans, the Turkish side were oozing confidence, Rangers were sloppy when they did see the ball. In extra time, Rangers offered more. Vaclav Cerny forced a brilliant save, and suddenly there was some hope. When it went to penalties you fancied Rangers, and Jack Butland more than played his part to cap a brilliant night for the Ibrox side.A great achievement as they march on in Europe.

His contract was mutually terminated by the Ibrox club as Russell Martin begins to build his own backroom staff. He might not be out the game for long though. Reports claim the former Gers number two is closing in on the Westerlo job. David Van der Broeck, a Belgian journalist claims he is favourite to succeed current boss Timmy Simons. He said on X, in response to Rangers' statement: "He is free to sign for Westerlo, where he is the favourite to succeed Timmy Simons as head coach." Charai left Rangers full of thanks for the club. He told the club's official website: 'As I leave Rangers, I want to thank everyone at the club for their support during my time here. 'This is a really special club, and as it enters a new era, I want to wish everyone associated with the club the very best for what comes next. 'Above all, I want to thank the Rangers supporters for their amazing backing across the period. We had some high moments and some low moments, but their support was the constant. It is something I will always remember and be forever grateful for.' Rangers CEO praised Charai as he moves on, saying: 'Through the managerial transition in February and beyond, he handled himself superbly and was a real asset to Barry and his staff during their period in charge of the team. Rangers fans react to news Russell Martin is their new manager 'As the men's first-team moves forth into this new era under Russell, it has been agreed between the club and Issame for him to move on." With Matt Gill joining Martin at Ibrox as his assistant coach, it left Charai without a place in the set up which inevitably lead to his departure from the Light Blues. Russell Martin has a busy summer ahead of him, preparing his Rangers squad for Champions League qualifiers. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

The World No.1 and World Champion went onto the Frankfurt contest having been handed an MBE each on the eve of the match in the King's Birthday Honours List. ‌ However, Littler and Humphries received the Most Brutal Exit at the hands of Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietceczko in front of a fevered German crowd. ‌ The home pair were outstanding throughout the contest as they put the game's best pair to the sword and crashed them oput of the competition at the first hurdle. Thomas Frank to cast eye over £12m Spurs gem as early loan offers land on table

Luka Vuskovic is set to arrive at Tottenham this summer after they struck a deal to sign the Croatian wonderkid from Hajduk Split in September 2023 Thomas Frank is set to cast an eye over 18-year-old Tottenham centre-back Luka Vuskovic in pre-season despite widespread loan interest in the Croatian. Spurs agreed a reported £12million package deal with Hajduk Split for the teenager, then 16, in September 2023 and they're understood to have pipped Manchester City and PSG to his signature. The towering defender starred on loan in Belgium last season with KVC Westerlo, scoring an impressive seven goals from the back, having also previously flourished in Poland during a six-month spell with Radomiak Radom in 2024. ‌ Now a series of top-flight clubs from Germany, France and Belgium including Hamburg and Club Brugge have contacted his representatives to register an early interest in signing Vuskovic on loan for the 2025-26 season, should he become available. ‌ However, Tottenham are in no immediate rush to make a decision over his future and they're yet to rule out Vuskovic potentially staying put as part of their first-team squad for the forthcoming campaign. Earlier this week, he was handed his senior international debut by Croatia when he was a late substitute in a 5-1 World Cup qualification win over Czechia. Spurs believe they have a major talent on their hands but they intend to manage his development carefully in a bid to ensure he fulfils his potential in north London. Speaking earlier this month, Vuskovic was full of praise for the Europa League winners and shared his excitement about joining the club, stating: 'First of all, I'm looking forward to feeling that level and seeing where I am in relation to the players who just won the Europa League so that I know what I need to work on the most. 'After that, I'll see in agreement with the club which is the smartest next step. The club has proven to be careful and wise in making decisions so far. Belgium has proven to be an ideal league at this stage of my career, and I think it is otherwise a great development league because it gives a lot of opportunities to young players." ‌ Belgian side Westerlo have also made no secret of the fact they're keen to forge a partnership with Tottenham to sign more players on loan from Spurs in the future, though their chances of landing Vuskovic for another year look very slim. Alfie Devine also gained valuable senior experience with the Jupiler Pro League outfit, netting six goals in 30 top-flight appearances. In the past six weeks, even before the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, Spurs held a series of meetings with the representatives or their loanees to review their progress. New boss Frank has a proven track record for utilising and developing talent both at Brentford and Brondby, having also previously coached Denmark at various youth levels.
