'He got a couple of fairly nasty knocks as well. Henri Matisse crashed into him fairly hard in the National Stakes and he was crashed into from behind in the Breeders' Cup.
'I think as a result when he just got very fractionally short of room in the Guineas, he just panicked and kind of pulled himself up, so we've worked hard with his confidence, both at home and in races.
'I thought he ran a really good race in the Jersey despite being drawn on the wrong side but on his side he was just a long neck, half a length second.
'And then he was obviously very good in the Henry Cecil Stakes (at Newmarket) and we were delighted when Charlie Appleby took his horse (Opera Ballo) out so we didn't have to try to reverse form with him.

'We've put him in the Park Stakes at Doncaster and we'll keep an eye on the Celebration Mile and see how many are likely to stay in that.
'We might supplement him in that over course and distance. He would have been a horse for what used to be the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury, but that's gone and he'd have had a penalty in that. We'd love to potentially travel him.
'We were thinking about a $1million race at Kentucky Downs which is quite up and down, which is un-American and quite Goodwood-esque, I believe, not that I've been there.
'We potentially might be invited to the Golden Eagle which is worth A$10million and it's a lot of money to pass up. So we'll just have to see. He's come out of the race super.'

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, who appeared on The Sports Agents podcast, a number of United players have been in contact with Baleba and 'explained the club's project' to the midfielder. 'Brighton, understandably, won't be happy about that,' he added. 'They'll see this as an attempt to unsettle their player.' At a fan forum last week, Brighton CEO Paul Barber insisted he had not spoken to United over Baleba, but was unable to provide any assurances over the midfielder's future. 'There's always going to be interest in our players,' he said. 'Manchester United have not been in touch with me. 'Speculation is speculation. Carlos is a fantastic talent. We hope he'll be here for years to come – but its subject to the dynamics of the football world, which isn't always predictable.' Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, meanwhile, has said he is 'not afraid' of losing key players to bigger clubs during transfer windows. The Seagulls have sanctioned the departure of a number of senior players in recent years, most recently selling Joao Pedro to Chelsea. 'No chance. I don't feel fear,' Hurzeler told the Monday Night Club when asked if he worries about having to sell key members of his squad. 'I'm not afraid of anything because the only thing we can do is be the best version we can be every day, like work as hard as we can. 'All the other things we can't influence, so we really have to focus on us. For sure, we can't spend the money like the big teams but one of our biggest values is togetherness. Joining the recent Premier League champions would likely be a tempting proposition but Wes Brown says Baleba should snub Man City for his beloved United. Transfer latest: Manchester United eye Brighton's Baleba while Liverpool track Giovanni Leoni
Manchester United are exploring a move for Carlos Baleba but are expected to have to pay a transfer record for an African player if they can persuade Brighton to sell the Cameroon midfielder. It is understood United have identified Baleba, who excelled for Fabian Hürzeler's side last season, as a potential long-term solution for their issues in central midfield. The 21-year-old has three years on his contract, which Brighton have an option to extend by 12 months. Sources close to Baleba have indicated he is keen to join United if an agreement can be reached. Brighton are adamant he is not for sale, and it is understood it would require an offer well above the £72m Arsenal paid Lille for the Ivory Coast forward Nicolas Pépé in 2019 to tempt them into changing their stance. It has been suggested it may take more than £100m to sign a player rated as one of the best emerging talents in world football. Any United bid for Baleba is understood to be dependent on players being moved on, with Chelsea still in talks over a deal for Alejandro Garnacho and Milan interested in Rasmus Højlund. They have been trying to offload two others attackers, Jadon Sancho and Antony, who are on big wages. United have spent more than £200m this summer on the forwards Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, another Cameroon international. Baleba, who joined Brighton in 2023 from Lille for £23m, told the Guardian earlier this year that he was happy at Brighton but admitted he wanted 'to do more'. Liverpool are considering a move for the Parma centre-half Giovanni Leoni as they look to increase Arne Slot's defensive options. The 18-year-old impressed in the second half of last season, making 17 appearances, and has attracted interest from several Serie A clubs this summer, including Inter. Liverpool are also keen on the 6ft 5in defender and ready to step up their interest if they receive encouragement that he is open to leaving Italy. Last week the Red Devils expressed an interest in the player, who has seen his stock rise with the Seagulls. He is the latest player to move to the Amex as a relatively unknown quantity before becoming a huge hit and those in Manchester are now circling. The Cameroon midfielder will have played with Andre Onana at international level and was previously team-mates with Leny Yoro at Lille. Several of the United squad have been in contact to explain the current landscape and ambitions, reports the Athletic. Baleba played in both of Brighton's wins over the Manchester outfit last season and was one of the most impressive players in his position across the Premier League. United though accept that any deal may be hard to strike given the numbers involved. Having already spent more than £200million on new signings there is not huge amounts of budget left. The club are not expected to submit a bid for Baleba unless they believe there is a chance of success as they continue with indirect conversations. Brighton have already sold Joao Pedro to Chelsea for £60m, lessening their need to sell. The Seagulls also want to retain their top talent and the price they slap on Baleba may curtail United's hopes of getting a deal over the line. The last time the south coast side sold a player of Baleba's profile it was Moises Caicedo - who left for more than £100m. The Cameroonian himself has shown no great desire to leave the Amex and Brighton. Their chief executive Paul Barber recently played down speculation about Baleba making the move to Manchester. He said: "We will always try to make sure we sell our best players at the right time, not just for the player but for us. If we end up doing that with any player, it's with the view to leave Fabian with a competitive squad, whatever happens. We don't want to sell our best players. "Carlos is a fantastic talent who has a lot of years ahead of him. We hope he will be here for many years to come. But it's something that, as always, is subjective to the dynamics of the football world which isn't always predictable."
