Transfer latest: Manchester United eye Brighton's Baleba while Liverpool track Giovanni Leoni
It is understood United have identified Baleba, who excelled for Fabian Hürzeler's side last season, as a potential long-term solution for their issues in central midfield. The 21-year-old has three years on his contract, which Brighton have an option to extend by 12 months.
Sources close to Baleba have indicated he is keen to join United if an agreement can be reached. Brighton are adamant he is not for sale, and it is understood it would require an offer well above the £72m Arsenal paid Lille for the Ivory Coast forward Nicolas Pépé in 2019 to tempt them into changing their stance. It has been suggested it may take more than £100m to sign a player rated as one of the best emerging talents in world football.
Any United bid for Baleba is understood to be dependent on players being moved on, with Chelsea still in talks over a deal for Alejandro Garnacho and Milan interested in Rasmus Højlund. They have been trying to offload two others attackers, Jadon Sancho and Antony, who are on big wages. United have spent more than £200m this summer on the forwards Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, another Cameroon international.
Baleba, who joined Brighton in 2023 from Lille for £23m, told the Guardian earlier this year that he was happy at Brighton but admitted he wanted 'to do more'. He said: 'I want to be a big midfielder, to be a legend, across the world.'
Brighton's chief executive, Paul Barber, said last week at a fans' forum that United had yet to be in touch but acknowledged Baleba could leave. 'Carlos is a fantastic talent,' he said. 'We hope he'll be here for years to come – but it's subject to the dynamics of the football world, which isn't always predictable.'
Liverpool are considering a move for the Parma centre-half Giovanni Leoni as they look to increase Arne Slot's defensive options. The 18-year-old impressed in the second half of last season, making 17 appearances, and has attracted interest from several Serie A clubs this summer, including Inter. Their coach, Cristian Chivu, was in charge at Parma last season.
Liverpool are also keen on the 6ft 5in defender and ready to step up their interest if they receive encouragement that he is open to leaving Italy. The Premier League champions have not made an approach to Parma.

Crystal Palace's Marc Guéhi remains Liverpool's main defensive target and Steve Parish, the Palace chair, conceded after Sunday's Community Shield that it would be better to sell the England international than lose him for nothing next summer. Liverpool hope Palace will lower their asking price for the 25-year-old as transfer deadline approaches. The champions could move for Guéhi and Leoni this summer.
Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté are the only established central defenders available to Slot for Friday's Premier League opener against Bournemouth. Liverpool have sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen and Joe Gomez missed the final games of pre-season with a minor achilles injury. Slot admitted after the Community Shield penalty shootout defeat by Palace that Liverpool's defending in pre-season had been a cause for concern.

'I don't think he's the guy,' Rio Ferdinand even said shortly after his £64m move to north London was announced. Mikel Arteta doesn't get too many signings wrong but it was him, remember, who pushed to sign Raheem Sterling last summer. Arsenal were torn between signing Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko earlier in the summer. Time will tell if they made the right decision. Jadon Sancho makes decision after Man Utd receive £20m transfer offer
Manchester United have received a £20m transfer offer from Roma for England international Jadon Sancho. Sancho is part of Ruben Amorim's bomb squad at Old Trafford along with the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. The 25-year-old has been in talks with a number of Serie A clubs this summer over a move away from Manchester United. Roma have jumped to the front of the queue to sign the winger by offering United a permanent deal worth £20m. Gaucho restaurants CEO issues stark warning to Reeves over tax hikes
A senior figure in the hospitality sector has sent a stark warning to Rachel Reeves ahead of the autumn Budget: 'Your taxes are curtailing growth'. Baton Berisha, chief executive of Rare Restaurants - the company which owns Gaucho and M restaurant brands - has called for National Insurance Contributions (NICs) to be restored to the level they were before April's increase and said he had the backing of others in the industry wanting the same. Pointing to Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures, Mr Berisha highlighted 84,000 jobs have been lost in the hospitality sector since the NICs hike took effect in April 2025 - equating to roughly 13,000 jobs disappearing per month since then. As a result, Mr Berisha has opted to speak out now 'to highlight the critical issues that the hospitality industry in the UK is facing.' They are, he says, largely 'due to Rachel Reeves' punitive taxes which are curtailing - rather than encouraging or supporting - growth.' 'I and other leaders in our sector want VAT reduced to 15 per cent and for the government to restore NICs to where it was before the budget, so we can continue growth,' Mr Berisha told The Independent. 'Over the 12 months to May 2025, the accommodation and food services sector shed 124,376 employees, a 5.6 per cent year-on-year decline . 'Between January and March of this year, operating hospitality venues saw the equivalent of around 20 restaurant closures per week, around 240 closures in that quarter. Additionally, over the past three months in the UK, there were hundreds of restaurant closures from independents and smaller chains, plus major chains downsizing.' While personnel costs are a big factor hitting all industries, the hospitality sector has also come under pressure from other angles. In April, the cost of business rates rose significantly when Retail, Hospitality and Leisure (RHL) firms stopped benefiting from a 75 per cent relief scheme, which was slashed to 40 per cent. In real terms, that meant in some cases an increased cost of up to 140 per cent. That means fewer jobs and, in some cases, fewer companies that can hire anyone at all. 'Combined with a 6.7 per cent rise in the National Living Wage, changes to business rates relief and other employment cost pressures, critical margins have come under extreme strain,' said Mr Berisha. 'Employers across hospitality have limited ability to pass on costs to customers, leading instead to reduced staff, frozen hiring, and in loads of cases, closures.' With the chancellor set to announce a new raft of taxes in the autumn Budget, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has warned businesses cannot shoulder any more of the burden. 'Without thriving firms the economy will continue to struggle,' said BCC research manager Stuart Morrison. 'Long-term strategic plans from government on industry, infrastructure and trade have been widely welcomed by businesses. But with the focus now on delivery, persistent cost pressures mean firms are left with one hand tied behind their back. 'There must be no more business taxes in the Autumn budget.' Mr Berisha, who arrived in the UK from Kosovo as a 15-year-old fleeing the war, started in the hospitality industry cleaning floors at Quo Vadis in the late 1990s. Since then, he has managed restaurants for Gordon Ramsay at the Savoy, Heston Blumenthal at The Fat Duck Group and others. Later in his career, a slew of CEO positions have seen him overseeing businesses with more than 10,000 employees and an annual turnover of £500m, leading iconic brands and steering the growth of The Ivy Collection, before taking over as CEO of The Wolseley Hospitality Group prior to his current role at Rare.
