Senior Spotlights: Local graduates
We are stepping into their shoes, learning more about what has brought them to this milestone. Effingham County High School Valedictorian Ella Browher and Gulfstream Youth Apprentice Scholar DaShaun Hardy are testaments to how hard work pays off.
'The hard nights where I was working and studying was just one part of it,' Ella said. 'But my teachers that helped me and brought me to where I am today.'
DaShaun agreed, 'Going to work and going to school at the same time was really something I didn't think I would be able to do. I was taking AP classes, doing enrollment classes, honors and doing all of that while going to work as well. I thought it was unachievable.'
South Effingham High School Valedictorian Matthew Ji and National Merit Scholar William Maher remind us that growth is gradual, and each step teaches lessons.
'When I came in freshman year, I was a very shy, very quiet, kind of like a turtle,' Matthew said. 'But I'm very, very grateful to my friends and teachers and family who have helped encourage me to try more things to try tennis.'
William told WSAV, 'Time management is a big one. If you're not challenged with having to do a lot of different things, extracurriculars and school activities, you don't learn how to really manage your time, good study and maintain friendships, relationships, things like that.'
Through it all, South Effingham High School Salutatorian Bowen Liu said it takes a village.
'I would really like to thank my parents,' he said. 'My parents were humble, Chinese immigrants who came over to the us and took the risk of entrepreneurship and they would be they were able to provide me with the resources to pursue my education.'
And Telah Edwards? She is eager to pave the way for those who follow.
'You have to be able to balance social life and your school life,' she said. 'Go with your friends, have a study day, go to Starbucks, just be with your friends. Be surrounded by people that are going to get you to that next level.'

Chicago CRED violence prevention program participants earn high school diplomas
Some Chicagoans working to turn their lives around celebrated a big accomplishment Thursday as they earned their high school diplomas. Chicago CRED, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing gun violence in Chicago, hosted a graduation ceremony Thursday at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Dr. A total of 58 new high school graduates were honored at the event, along with several people who graduated earlier in the year, participants in other community violence intervention programs, and staff members who have earned new education credentials. In all, 112 people were honored Thursday, CRED said. All the grads participate in CRED's violence prevention program. The organization helped the new grads earn their diplomas online. On Thursday, family members, life coaches, and outreach workers were all there to cheer on the graduates. Since CRED was founded in 2016, 400 participants have earned high school diplomas through the Penn Foster virtual high school program, CRED said. Many participants and CRED staff have also pursued online college courses through a partnership with Southern New Hampshire University.

‘His overall condition was deteriorating': Georgia Aquarium announces death of male whale shark
GEORGIA (WHNT) — The Georgia Aquarium announced the death of one of its male whale sharks Thursday. The aquarium said its team noticed changes in Taroko's behavior through wellness monitoring. The team said his overall condition was deteriorating despite all veterinary and care interventions. Wednesday night, the aquarium said it made the humane decision to euthanize Taroko. 'Taroko showed more than 43 million people the majesty of his species over the nearly two decades he lived here. He also contributed a wealth of data and information about whale shark biology, health, and behavior,' the aquarium said. Taroko first came to the Georgia Aquarium in 2007 from Taiwan, where he was rescued from a seafood market. The aquarium said the other male whale shark, Yushan, is doing well and that its focus is on his well-being. 'Caring for whale sharks is an immense honor and undertaking – we were privileged to know Taroko for so long and share him with all of you. Taroko was named for the Taiwanese national park that is beautiful and larger than life, and he will always be that to us,' Georgia Aquarium said. Whale Sharks are known as the largest fish in the sea, spanning an average length between 18 and 32 feet. The Georgia Aquarium is the only aquarium in the United States where you can visit these majestic sharks. GA whale sharks are held in the aquarium's largest tank, Ocean Voyager. This tank holds 6.3 million gallons of water and is home to over 50 species. As one of the largest single aquatic exhibits in the world, Ocean Voyager features an acrylic tunnel for guests to view thousands of marine creatures on all sides, as well as a giant acrylic viewing window to explore our oceans like never before, GA's website says.
