Patna: A 23-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her husband in an inebriated condition when she and her family refused to meet his dowry demand in Purnia district on Wednesday night.
The incident took place at Raghav Nagar Tola under Jankinagar police station area of the district. The deceased was identified as Renu Kumari, wife of Ranjit Kumar.
According to police, Ranjit was demanding Rs 80,000 from her family which they refused to give. Ranjit allegedly assaulted and strangled his wife. The police have launched a manhunt to nab him. Woman's family has filed a murder case against the husband and mother-in-law, who are currently absconding.
An FSL (forensic science lab) team has also collected evidence from the spot.
As per the FIR, Renu married Ranjit Kumar in 2022. He was addicted to alcohol that her family was unaware of. Over time, he sold his ancestral land to support his drinking habit and repeatedly demanded dowry from Renu and her family. When these demands were not met by them, he used to assault his wife. A village panchayat was also convened in an attempt to resolve the ongoing disputes, but the efforts proved futile.

Retired govt employee, brother lose Rs 4.4 cr in stock trading scam

Hyderabad: A 61-year-old retired govt employee and his 58-year-old brother were duped of 4.48 crore by fraudsters operating a fake stock trading portal. According to officials, the retired govt employee, a resident of Kothapet, clicked on a YouTube advertisement link about a stock marketing investment platform. Within hours of clicking the link, the victim began receiving WhatsApp messages and voice calls from individuals posing as Rajiv Mehta and his associates, Sana Kapoor and Krithika Joshi. The trio allegedly promised one month of VIP trading with zero commission for anyone who voted daily for Mehta in a purported 'World Finance Challenge' that carried an $8 million prize, which, they claimed, would be shared among supporters. As per their advice, between June 24 and Aug 2, the victims transferred 4.48 crore in 23 transactions from their three bank accounts to multiple accounts provided by the accused. On Aug 2, when the balance on their account was displayed as 39 crore, the brothers decided to withdraw 2 crore to clear housing loan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! Suspecting foul play, the brothers travelled to Bengaluru on Aug 6, where the original stock trading company's head office was located. "The company staff in Bengaluru informed us that the platform we used was fake, closely mimicking their company's URL. The fraudsters had even used the name of one of their former employee. After returning to Hyderabad, my brother suffered a stress-induced heart attack and was hospitalised for four days," said the 58-year-old in his police complaint. The victims filed an online complaint and submitted supporting bank statements, chat logs, and screen captures to TGCSB on Aug 14. An FIR was registered under Section 66D of the IT Act and Sections 318(4), 319(2), and 338 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Hospital employee duped of 7 lakh in digital arrest scam

New Delhi: A 51-year-old nursing officer working at a govt hospital in the city was duped of Rs 7 lakh in a digital arrest scam . Posing as Mumbai Police officers, the conmen falsely accused the woman of involvement in a money laundering case, kept her under 'surveillance' for 24 hours, and even warned her informing her husband could endanger his life. The victim, a resident of Hari Nagar, told police that around 4.56pm on July 18, she received a call from a person claiming to be from the telecommunications department. The caller warned that her Aadhaar card had been misused to issue a phone number and would be blacklisted if she did not lodge a police complaint that day. She was then given a number for the Mumbai Crime Branch, following which the call abruptly ended. Shortly after, the woman received a WhatsApp video call from that number. When she answered, a man dressed as a Mumbai Crime Branch officer appeared on the call. After briefly showing his face, he turned off the camera and sent her a photo of a businessman linked to a money laundering case, the woman stated in her complaint. He accused her of involvement, claiming an ATM card linked to her name was found during a search of the businessman's house. Fraud probe: New Orleans mayor indicted on multiple charges; accused of hiding romantic relationship with her bodyguard

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell (AP image) A federal grand jury on Friday indicted New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell on charges of conspiracy, fraud and obstruction, stemming from allegations that she tried to hide a romantic relationship with her bodyguard. The indictment marks the conclusion of a multi-year federal investigation into Cantrell, the city's first female mayor in its 300-year history. Her bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, has pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud and making false statements. Prosecutors allege that Vappie hid the relationship with Cantrell while submitting false payroll records claiming he was on duty. Vappie, who retired from the police department last year, is scheduled to stand trial in January. Federal authorities say Cantrell and Vappie exchanged encrypted messages through an app to avoid detection and deleted the conversations afterward. Both have maintained that their relationship was strictly professional. Acting US Attorney Michael Simpson described the case as a 'three-year fraud scheme that we allege exploited their public authority and positions.' He said Cantrell arranged for Vappie to attend 14 trips, claiming these were occasions when they were 'truly alone.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The indictment states that in 2021, Cantrell and Vappie 'developed a personal and intimate relationship' and allegedly used their public positions to hide it and create opportunities to spend time together. Simpson added that Cantrell falsely claimed in a 2021 affidavit that her phone automatically deleted messages, when the function was only activated in December 2022 after media scrutiny. Following photos taken by a private citizen showing Cantrell and Vappie dining together and drinking wine, Cantrell reportedly filed a police report and sought a restraining order. Cantrell will leave the office in January. Her second term has been marked by clashes with City Council members and a failed recall effort in 2022. 'This is a sad day for the people of New Orleans,' said Monet Brignac, a spokesperson for City Council President JP Morrell. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cantrell family as they navigate through this difficult time.' Cantrell has not posted on her X account since July 15, when she reported that there have been historic declines in crime in the city. Political observers note that her public profile has diminished in recent months due to disputes with the city council and restrictions on her executive powers approved by voters. Cantrell and her supporters argue that she has been unfairly targeted as a Black woman and held to a different standard than male officials. Earlier this year, she described some of the treatment she received as 'very disrespectful, insulting, in some cases kind of unimaginable.'
