digital arrest scam
. Posing as Mumbai Police officers, the conmen falsely accused the woman of involvement in a money laundering case, kept her under 'surveillance' for 24 hours, and even warned her informing her husband could endanger his life.
The victim, a resident of Hari Nagar, told police that around 4.56pm on July 18, she received a call from a person claiming to be from the telecommunications department. The caller warned that her Aadhaar card had been misused to issue a phone number and would be blacklisted if she did not lodge a police complaint that day. She was then given a number for the Mumbai Crime Branch, following which the call abruptly ended. Shortly after, the woman received a WhatsApp video call from that number.
When she answered, a man dressed as a Mumbai Crime Branch officer appeared on the call. After briefly showing his face, he turned off the camera and sent her a photo of a businessman linked to a money laundering case, the woman stated in her complaint. He accused her of involvement, claiming an ATM card linked to her name was found during a search of the businessman's house.

Gangster found hanging in Delhis Mandoli Jail, police suspect suicide
New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) A notorious gangster with several criminal cases registered against him, including those for murder and extortion, was found dead in his cell at Mandoli Jail here on Saturday, officials said. They said police suspect that he died by suicide. The inmate, identified as Salman Tyagi, was found hanging during a routine inspection in Jail Number 15. Prison authorities said he had used a bedsheet to make a noose. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, they said. Police and jail officials have launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death. 'A probe has been initiated. We are examining how the incident occurred and what could have led him to take this step. A detailed report will be submitted," a senior officer said. Tyagi was widely known in Delhi's underworld. Convicted under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, he had a long record of offences, including cases of extortion and organised violence. He began his criminal career with the infamous Neeraj Bawana gang but later attempted to build his own network, investigators said. Sources said that in recent years, Tyagi sought to align himself with the Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate. Even while lodged in jail, he allegedly continued to issue instructions to his associates. Last year, he reportedly ordered an attack on two businessmen in Delhi to extort Rs 50 lakh from them. Police believe the move was intended to show his influence and gain Bishnoi's trust. Beyond crime, Tyagi cultivated a flamboyant image on social media. Officers said he was deeply influenced by Bollywood actor Salman Khan and copied his hairstyle and appearance from the 2003 film 'Tere Naam'. He often posted pictures and videos on Instagram and YouTube, projecting himself as a larger-than-life figure. 'Even after his arrest, he directed his aides to film him during court appearances and circulate videos to maintain his online presence," a police source said. Prison officials said CCTV footage and security measures are being reviewed to check for any lapses. Further investigation into the matter is underway, they added. Protests erupt after youth blames cops in suicide note in Anakapalli
Visakhapatnam: The suicide of a youngster, who was allegedly harassed and tortured by police, has sparked a protest in front of Butchayyapeta police station in Anakapalli district. The deceased was identified as M Krishnamurthy (23), a resident of Aithampudi village at Butchayyapeta mandal in Anakapalle district. In his letter, he claimed that he was wrongfully arrested in connection with a theft that occurred on May 28, 2025. Although the actual culprit, Reddy Shivakumar, was arrested, he along with his friend Shiva allegedly conspired with the police to falsely implicate him in the case. He also mentioned that he was tortured with candle burns and beaten up severely and robbed of his money during the interrogation in the case. While he was availing treatment at KG Hospital in Vizag city, Krishnamurthy wrote this letter but no action was taken by the authorities. After being released on bail from prison on Aug 4, Krishnamurthy confronted Shivakumar and Shiva, questioning why he and his family were dragged into a criminal case despite being innocent. Enraged by this confrontation, Shivakumar and Shiva allegedly used their influence to summon Krishnamurthy back to the police station through constable Ganesh and head constable Arjun. The officers reportedly threatened to frame him in another case, he mentioned. Deeply distressed by the continued harassment, Krishnamurthy died by suicide. He mentioned that Shivakumar, Shiva, constable Ganesh and head constable Arjun were responsible for his suicide. The youngster's death triggered protests in his village, with family members and friends demanding that murder charges be filed against the accused. However, the police claimed that the issue has been resolved by the villagers. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
