Sachin Tendulkar has the record for the most runs in Test and One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and has 100 international centuries to his name. Fans worldwide loved his play from 1989 to 2013. He was the first cricketer to hit a double century in ODIs and has played a record 200 Test matches.
In ODIs, he hit 18,426 runs at an average of 44.83, comprising 49 centuries and 96 half-centuries. In Tests, he scored 15,921 runs at an average of 53.78, with 51 centuries and 68 fifties.
Tendulkar made his World Cup debut in 1992 and played as part of the 2011 WC-winning squad. The scenes of his teammates carrying him on their shoulders during the victory lap are one of cricket's most memorable images. He was part of the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and helped them win the title in 2013.

Kolkata-based sports promoter Satadru Dutta, responsible for this set of exhibitions, had a fairly simple reasoning: getting good reviews of India into the ears of Leo Messi. Messi's teammates Emiliano Martinez, who helped lift the 2022 FIFA World Cup for Argentina, and Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho had both arrived in India last year for similar events organised by Dutta. As per the promoter, asking them to get a word in edgeways with Messi was the only way. 'The football world is a small circle. When I got Emi Martinez and Ronaldinho to Kolkata, I told them that I am trying to bring Messi to India and your review will matter,' he explained to the Indian Express. 'If you can give a good review to his team and even Messi himself, it will help. Touchwood, I executed it in a neat and clean way, they gave a very good review to Messi,' he continued. How nostalgia and a Durga Puja statue helped convince Messi The good news for Dutta was that Messi agreed, even if not immediately, but that the deal was cut thanks to the help of Messi's former teammates. Dutta revealed that a chat with Messi in 2024 led to the decision that within that year would not be possible, but it would be on Messi's agenda for the future 'I just said if it would be possible over the next one or two years, he said 'I love the idea',' Dutta continued. He further revealed that a couple of flourishes helped seal the deal, such as showing Messi videos of his last time in India in 2011, which happened to be the first of many times he wore the skipper's armband for the Albiceleste, as well as a picture of a Messi statue that was installed on a Durga Puja pandal in a football-crazed Kolkata. Messi will first be flying to Kolkata, the first stop on a four-city tour also including Ahmedabad, New Delhi, and Mumbai. The multi-city model for the tour would be tougher to organise, but also essential for it to be lucrative, said Dutta: 'If it is not multiple cities, it won't be financially viable.' The Argentinian megastar is expected to take part in several functions, meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and also participate in seven-a-side games from legendary Indian athletes to Bollywood celebrities — and potentially even try his hand at cricket alongside some modern-day Indian greats, if reports are to be believed.

Former India all-rounder Karsan Ghavri has taken aim at Sachin Tendulkar over not 'putting his foot down' after the decision to rename the 'Pataudi Trophy' as the 'Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy', calling it a 'degrading' act for Pataudi's cricketing legacy. The renamed trophy was contested for the first time in July-August this year, with the series ending in a 2-2 draw. Ghavri questioned how such a move was cleared in the first place and labelled it a disrespect to the memory of the Nawab of Pataudi, whose name had been synonymous with the contest for decades. The Pataudi Trophy was renamed to Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy before the start of the series in June(PTI) 'That is very wrong. Number one, the Australia-West Indies series is always called the Frank Worrell Trophy. The India-Australia Trophy is always called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If its name changed, Gavaskar poore India ko hila ke rakh dega (Gavaskar will shake the whole of India),' Ghavri told Vicky Lalwani on the latter's YouTube channel. Ghavri squarely held the BCCI responsible for failing to oppose it. He questioned how the board could stay silent when the Pataudi Trophy's name was removed. 'The BCCI should've put its foot down with the MCC and the ECB. Tiger's name shouldn't have been removed,' said Ghavri. Ghavri criticising Tendulkar While Sachin Tendulkar did object to the decision at first, Ghavri was unimpressed with the cricketing great for not being firm enough on his stand. 'In the same context, when it came to Sachin Tendulkar, that this trophy would be changed, and this trophy would be named after you and Anderson, Sachin should've said no. Objection is different,' said the former all-rounder, who represented India in 39 Tests. 'In the first place, you should've put your foot down and should've said 'No, I don't want to use my name because Tiger Pataudi's name is already there. He's a legend of Indian cricket. If you want to give medals, use our name. Trophy's name should remain the same'. 'First of all, this question should've never been raised. You're degrading somebody of a great stature.' The first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy saw an excellent display of cricket from both sides, with Shubman Gill, leading in his maiden series, showcasing incredible form to smash 754 runs in five Tests, while Mohammed Siraj leading the pace attack with a series high 23 wickets in nine innings.

‘Only Malayalam cinema woke up to gender reforms'
Gender activist and chair professor, school of public health, DY Patil University, Navi Mumbai, Dr Lakshmi Lingam speaks to TOI on why safety, fairness and diversity remain elusive for women in the film industry What is your opinion on struggles for gender equality in the Malayalam film industry? Gender discrimination and harassment are widespread in the Indian film industry, though challenges differ across regions. The Malayalam industry has shown courage in addressing these issues openly. The formation of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), the Hema Committee, and the publication of its report are trailblazing moves, among the first of their kind in the country. When women from other industries spoke out, it became clear that problems—harassment, sidelining, casting-couch situations—were universal. Yet only Malayalam cinema woke up. Even in Telangana, when an actress protested publicly after harassment, little systemic change followed. Infrastructure like Internal Complaints Committees, childcare facilities, safe work schedules and equal wages remains largely absent. What about the #MeToo movement and recent revelations? Did they make a difference? During #MeToo, many women came forward, but tangible outcomes were minimal. Victim blaming is rampant, with questions about attire, intentions, or consensual relations. Survivors often doubt themselves. In both home and work environments, abuse cycles persist: Perpetrators apologize, blame stress or alcohol, and the cycle repeats. Harassment is sometimes reframed as romance gone wrong, damaging careers. Public harassment also persists, and family restrictions often prevent women from seeking legal recourse. A cultural shift, mainstreaming women's rights, is essential. What basic facilities are missing for women in the industry? The industry thrives on exploitation. Labour laws are rarely enforced across the 40 verticals of filmmaking. Male stars have vanity vans; junior female artists lack clean toilets. Irregular hours and low pay force pregnant women out of technical roles. Many work without contracts, some as unpaid interns. Families invest in film education, yet young workers struggle to earn. Junior artists' unions remain largely silent and foreign dancers are sometimes hired at lower costs. Films are made for profit, but workers bear the brunt of flops. Even men face casting-couch pressures. Why do senior stars remain silent on gender issues? Top stars are diplomatic, though they advocate for social campaigns like polio or Swachh Bharat. They should similarly speak out on respecting women. Senior leaders must promote gender sensitivity and diversity. Currently, 75% of film characters are men; women remain underrepresented. Including trans people, persons with disabilities, and varied social backgrounds would make films more reflective of real society. Some producers say they avoid hiring women due to harassment complaints. Your thoughts? This is discriminatory. Excluding women does not solve the problem. Clear codes of conduct and guidelines recognizing power relations are necessary. Professions must exercise power responsibly, like open-space meetings for PhD supervision. Cinema needs similar systems to maintain boundaries. Why are intimacy coordinators important? Modern films feature more intimate scenes. Trained intimacy coordinators ensure comfort and prevent abuse. Contracts should specify the number of kissing scenes, angles, and choreography. Currently, there is only one female intimacy coordinator in India; more are needed. In what ways do politics and societal trends influence filmmaking in India? There is a lot of hyper-nationalism and hyper-religiosity now in Indian movies. Many filmmakers avoid sensitive issues to stay away from controversy instead of dealing with them boldly. While trends come and go, well-made films like Laapataa Ladies will always find acceptance. What's your view on Adoor Gopalakrishnan's comments regarding financial support for SC/ST and women filmmakers? I'm not fully aware of Adoor Gopalakrishnan's exact statement, but govt funding for filmmakers from disadvantaged backgrounds is a welcome step. Beyond financial support, the govt should offer mentoring, access to editing labs, and a supportive ecosystem to help these filmmakers succeed. Kerala's govt is preparing a state film policy—what are your thoughts on this move? It is a strong beginning. Complaint redressal committees must be broad-based and independent, fair wages ensured, hiring non-discriminatory and facilities for women provided across all roles. Malayalam cinema has strong unions—do they help or hinder the industry? Kerala's strong unions may deter some investors, but they can drive revolutionary changes. Other states can adopt Mollywood's trade union model.
