Joe Root Overtakes Dravid & Kallis To Become 3rd Highest Run Scorer In Tests

The ongoing India-England Test at Old Trafford is Root's 157th Test match for the English team. In 286 innings, he now has 13,290 runs to his credit. World No. 1 Test batter Joe Root on Friday (July 25) broke Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis' record to become the third leading run getter in Test cricket. Root, who made his Test debut for England in December 2012 against India in Nagpur, needed 31 runs in the ongoing fourth India-England Test to overtake Dravid and Kallis, and he achieved the objective in the morning session of the third day's play. Dravid played a total of 164 Tests from 1996 to 2012 and amassed a total of 13,288 runs, whereas Kallis 'called time on his Test career after scoring 13,289 runs in 166 matches. Most runs in Test cricket The ongoing Test match between India and England in Manchester is Root's 157th five-day format for the English team. He has 37 centuries and 66 half-centuries to his credit in Test matches. The overall record of scoring the most runs in Test cricket is in the name of Sachin Tendulkar. The legendary right-handed batter played 200 red-ball matches for India from 1989 to 2013 and scored 15,921 runs. Australia's Ricky Ponting is in 2nd place with 13,378 runs to his credit. Root needs to score at least 120 runs in the Manchester Test to break Ponting's record and become the second leading run getter in the five-day format of the game. Before becoming third leading run getter in Test cricket, Root entered his name in the record books by becoming first player in the world to score 1000 Test runs in Manchester. Root needed 22 runs to join the 1000-run club, and he achieved the objective during the 53rd over of England's first innings bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. Root has one century and seven half-centuries to his name in 12 Test matches played so far at Old Trafford, and the right-handed batter from Yorkshire would like to come up with another big show. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 16:26 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Sacked from India job, former KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar lands top role at Women's Premier League franchise

Abhishek Nayar, who was sacked as India men's team assistant coach in less than a year into the job, has been appointed as the head coach of the Women's Premier League (WPL) franchise UP Warriorz on Friday for the next season. Nayar's appointment comes after UP Warriorz parted ways with Jon Lewis in June earlier this year after three seasons. Nayar, who played three ODIs for India in his short stint, has been a stalwart in Mumbai cricket. Since his retirement in 2019, Nayar served as an assistant coach for Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He was also the lead coach of the KKR academy in 2018 and also served as Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) head coach in Caribbean Premier League in 2022. "Bringing Abhishek Nayar on board as head coach feels like a natural and exciting step forward for UP Warriorz," UPW COO and director of cricket Kshemal Waingankar told ESPNcricinfo. "When someone of Abhishek's calibre became available, it was a no-brainer. Few in Indian cricket bring the same depth of experience when it comes to shaping players and shaping winning cultures. 'In just the past 18 months alone, Abhishek has been part of three championship-winning campaigns, each in a different role, each leaving a lasting impact. We are thrilled to have him lead a Warriorz side that's united, fearless and hungry to grow. With Abhishek at the helm, we believe this group can do something truly special.' Although Nayar has never coached a women's team, he did work with the UP Warriorz players in a week-long off-season camp in August 2023 in Bengaluru. He has also worked with a number of international and uncapped players over the years to hone their skills. Having worked with mentor Gautam Gambhir at KKR, Nayar had built a good rapport with the former India opener and their partnership played a key role in the Kolkata-based franchise lifting the IPL title for the third time in 2024. With Gambhir being appointed as Indian men's team head coach, he also took Nayar into the national setup, thus joining as an assistant coach in 2024. However, with the Indian team faltering heavily against the likes of New Zealand (home) and Australia (away) in Tests, Nayar got the axe in April. He then returned as the KKR assistant coach midway into IPL 2025.

Cricket has changed quite a bit: Bhuvneshwar Kumar weighs in on Dukes ball debate

Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has weighed in on the growing debate over the quality of the Dukes ball being used in the ongoing Test series between India and England. Known for his control and ability to swing the ball both ways, Bhuvneshwar admitted that the ball hasn't offered as much movement as expected this time around and believes it's difficult to pinpoint a single reason behind the Dukes ball came under intense scrutiny during the third Test at Lord's, with several current and former players expressing concerns about its quality. Frequent ball changes and a noticeable lack of swing made it a major talking point in the match. While many have been quick to criticise the manufacturer, Bhuvneshwar offered a more measured view of the situation.'It will be difficult to say what exactly happened. It could be the ball, the wickets, or even the weather. Generally, we don't talk much about the weather, but it is changing due to a number of reasons,' he said in an interview with Sports Today. Bhuvneshwar acknowledged the evolution of the game in recent years, especially with batters becoming increasingly aggressive and unafraid to take on bowlers from the outset. He noted that in such a climate, where batting tends to dominate, bowlers rarely get the recognition they deserve despite putting in tough shifts.'I don't know exactly what the reason is, but of course, yes, cricket has changed quite a bit. Be it playing aggressively or making of the pitches, it has been difficult for the bowlers. Be it the strategy or the performance, bowlers deserve credit, and I feel India are doing great,' he bowlers have had a challenging time in the ongoing series, with England currently leading 2-1 and dominating the fourth Test at Old Trafford. Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett got the hosts off to a flying start in the first innings with scores of 84 and 94 respectively, once again putting the pressure back on the Indian bowling the series on the line, it is now up to India to produce a fightback. Whether or not the Dukes ball starts to behave differently in the coming days remains to be seen.- EndsMust Watch
