Russia says remaining two S-400 squadrons will be delivered by 2026-27
NEW DELHI: Russia on Thursday assured India it will deliver the two remaining squadrons of the S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems, which played a crucial role during
Operation Sindoor
against Pakistan last month, by 2026-27.
The delivery of the fourth and fifth squadrons of the S-400 air defence systems, which has been hugely delayed due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, figured in the bilateral meeting between defence minister
Rajnath Singh
and his Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov on the side-lines of the SCO defence ministers' meet at Qingdao in China, sources told TOI.
'We had insightful deliberations on boosting India-Russia defence ties,' Singh posted on `X'.
Under the $5.43 billion (Rs 40,000 crore) contract inked with Russia in 2018, India was slated to get all the five squadrons by end-2023.
Each S-400 squadron has two missile batteries with 128 missiles each, with interception ranges of 120, 200, 250 and 380-km, as well as long-range acquisition and engagement radars and all-terrain transporter-erector vehicles.
The IAF has deployed the first three S-400 squadrons in north-west and east India to cater for both China and Pakistan.

'As per Russia, the fourth squadron will now come next year, and the fifth in 2027,' a source said.
During the intense cross-border hostilities with Pakistan from May 7 to 10, Pakistan had claimed it successfully bombed the Adampur air-base and destroyed a S-400 battery deployed there.
But PM Narendra Modi visited the air-base on May 13, and posed with an all-terrain transporter-erector-launcher vehicle of the S-400 system in the background to reject the claim.
The S-400 batteries, which can detect and destroy hostile strategic bombers, jets, spy planes, missiles and drones at a range of 380-km, constitute the outermost layer of India's integrated air defence system and is fully plugged into the IAF's integrated air command and control system (IACCS).
The DRDO, on its part, is also developing an air defence system with a 350-km interception range under the ambitious Project Kusha. With the defence ministry in Sept 2023 approving the 'acceptance of necessity' for the procurement of five of its squadrons for the IAF at a cost of Rs 21,700 crore, India plans to operationally deploy this system by 2028-2029, as was first reported by TOI.

CESC makes smart meters mandatory for new connections from July 1
Mysuru: The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) has initiated a significant upgrade in its power distribution system across its jurisdiction. Starting from July 1, it is compulsory for new power consumers to install smart meters at their own cost. Smart power meters aim for better energy management. However, it is still not clear about switching over to smart meters for existing customers in its jurisdiction of five districts, including Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan, Chamarajanagar, and Kodagu. Ramaswamy, general manager of the IT wing of CESC, informed TOI that smart meter installation is mandatory for all new customers from July, and the consumer must bear the expenses of the smart meters, which would cost approximately Rs 5,000. Smart meters provide options for consumers to either pay the power bill after usage or opt for prepaid, wherein the consumers have to charge the account to use power. At any time, a consumer can switch over from prepaid to postpaid or vice versa. Smart meters are compulsory across all installations in the jurisdiction of CESC, which currently has about 25 lakh individual connections in five districts. The smart meters will enable real-time tracking of power consumption, allowing both consumers and CESC officials to monitor usage patterns effectively. These digital devices will automatically record energy consumption at regular intervals and transmit the data to the central system using a standalone network. Smart meters include accurate billing, elimination of manual meter reading, quick detection of power theft, and reduced technical losses. Consumers can access their consumption data through mobile applications and web portals, helping them manage their electricity usage more efficiently. The initiative aligns with the national smart grid mission, aiming to modernise the power sector through digital technology, and Karnataka is the latest to become a smart consumer metering state. Consumer meeting CESC has organised a customer meeting at its office in Vijayanagar in west Mysuru on Friday to educate consumers about smart meters and to clear doubts regarding it.

1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued a slew of directions on Thursday in an effort to ensure that the Kanwar Yatra this year takes place without any incident or accident. In a review meeting with Ghaziabad police and administration during his day-long visit to the city, the CM said that special arrangements should be in place for devotees from Muradnagar to Tila Mod, from the Kadarpur border to the Ghaziabad-Delhi border, on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, and on NH-24 and NH-9. He said that the Kanwar routes must have watchtowers and Kanwar camps, and the roads must be repaired, with lighting, CCTVs, toilets, clean drinking water, and medical facilities provided. Mumbai: In a controversial move, work on the 11.8 km underground twin tunnels between Borivli and Thane is likely to be allowed at night. At a review meeting on the progress of the construction work on Thursday at Vidhan Bhavan, CM Devendra Fadnavis , saying that all infrastructure projects in the state must be completed within three years, directed that permission be taken from the forest dept to carry out work at night on the underground tunnels. Sources said a decision on allowing work at night in the national park will be taken by the chief wildlife warden within a fortnight. Additional land has also been sought on the Borivli end of the tunnel, said sources. Sumaira Abdulali, founder of NGO Awaaz Foundation, said that while noise pollution has become a problem in the city, so far the forest has been inviolate.
