Brewers use best 60-game stretch in team history to state case as best team in the major leagues
ATLANTA (AP) — Before Tuesday night's 7-2 win at Atlanta, Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy suggested 'most people couldn't tell you five players on our team.' A look at the standings would indicate more Brewers players soon will be recognized by more fans. After all, it's difficult to overlook a team that not only continues to extend its lead in the NL Central but also boasts the best record in the majors. 'What we're doing in here right now is special,' said right-hander Freddy Peralta after allowing only four hits and one run in five innings while setting a career high with his 13th win. 'We're just enjoying the game and coming to compete every day,' Peralta said. 'We have to keep it that way.' Peralta was surprised to learn he had established a career high for wins in a season. 'It always feels good to get the win as a team but also personally for me, it's a big deal,' Peralta said. Murphy said Peralta, who was named to this year NL All-Star team, is "just getting started. ... This is the best Freddy has ever been. I thought he was really, really good.' The Brewers lead second-place Chicago by four games in the NL Central following the Cubs' 5-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. The Brewers have a five-game winning streak. They have won six straight road games and are 44-16 in their last 60 games overall. It's the best 60-game stretch in team history. Murphy said it will be important for players to keep their focus in the final stretch of the regular season. 'We really have to be disciplined right now, more than ever before," Murphy said after the Brewers (69-44) moved 25 games over .500, their best record of the season. Milwaukee's road success has been an important part of the surge to first place. The team's 33-24 road record gives the Brewers the best winning percentage (.579) away from home in baseball. The record includes winning the first two games of the three-game series in Atlanta. 'You can't assume everything is going to go our way going forward,' Murphy said, adding he recognized the Brewers were fortunate to avoid giving up more runs Tuesday night when the Braves left 14 runners on base, tied for their highest total in the last two seasons. The Brewers also have made key moves this year, including their trade for first baseman Andrew Vaughn on June 13. Vaughn has an 11-game hitting streak, matching his career high, following a two-run single on Tuesday night. He is hitting .429 with four homers and 14 RBIs during is hitting streak. He is hitting .370 since joining the Brewers. Murphy said his players 'are hungry' and 'don't every try to play safe.' As for the lack of national recognition, Murphy just smiled. American League-leading Blue Jays go deep 5 times in a 10-4 win over Rockies
DENVER (AP) — Daulton Varsho hit a pair of two-run homers and a two-run double, and the American League-leading Toronto Blue Jays went deep five times in a 10-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Varsho homered after Alejandro Kirk's two-out single off Anthony Molina in the fourth to give Toronto (67-48) a 3-2 lead. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (three hits) and Addison Barger both homered for the 17th time — hitting back-to-back shots leading off the sixth. Kirk walked and scored on Varsho's 11th homer to cap the four-run inning. Varsho's double came in a three-run ninth to complete the scoring. Son Heung-min signs with MLS' Los Angeles FC after a decade at Tottenham
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Son Heung-min agreed to a contract with Los Angeles FC on Tuesday, finalizing his move to Major League Soccer after a decade at Tottenham Hotspur. The 33-year-old South Korean superstar forward is joining LAFC three days after he formally announced his decision to leave Tottenham. Son attended LAFC's Leagues Cup match against Tigres at BMO Stadium on Tuesday night, watching from a luxury suite. LAFC will formally introduce Son at a news conference Wednesday. LAFC, a deep-pocketed club with significant team success in its first eight seasons of existence, reportedly paid a transfer fee of more than $20 million, which could end up being the most ever for an MLS move. Son was a beloved presence at Spurs, scoring 173 goals in 454 competitive appearances for the North London club while rising to global prominence with his combination of speed, playmaking skill and finishing acumen. The captain was given a memorable farewell last week in Seoul during Tottenham's exhibition match against Newcastle, getting a guard of honor from both teams and tearfully exiting in the second half while nearly 65,000 fans roared. But South Korea's most popular athlete — and almost certainly the greatest Asian soccer player in history — has chosen an auspicious stage for the next chapter of his groundbreaking career. Los Angeles has the world's largest ethnic Korean population outside Korea, with the city's vibrant Koreatown district sitting just a couple of miles from LAFC's BMO Stadium. LAFC is undoubtedly hoping to market Son as a soccer counterpart to the Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani, albeit on a smaller scale. LAFC currently sits sixth in the Western Conference at 10-6-6, but with multiple games in hand on every team in front of it because of its participation in the Club World Cup. Son's seven Premier League goals last season were his fewest since his Tottenham debut, but he still appears to have the pace and skill necessary to be a difference-maker at any level. He also turned 33 only a month ago, putting him on the younger end of the global stars recently arriving in MLS. Lionel Messi and Marco Reus were 35 and Luis Suárez was 37 when they went stateside in recent years, while Olivier Giroud and Lloris were both 37 when they joined LAFC last year. Son also will be reunited with longtime Tottenham teammate Hugo Lloris, who has been outstanding since becoming LAFC's goalkeeper last season. High-scoring French forward Denis Bouanga is the only designated player currently under contract for LAFC, and general manager John Thorrington has been criticized by some fans for not using the full power of his financial resources this season. LAFC spent months on an ultimately failed attempt to get France's Antoine Griezmann to leave Atlético Madrid. Son seems to be a much better fit for LAFC than Giroud, who moved to Lille last month after one disappointing year in California.
