Sandton roads to get an upgrade after city investment
The City of Johannesburg is rolling out a comprehensive plan to address the mounting frustrations caused by potholes and poor road conditions, especially in high-traffic areas like Sandton.
Through a substantial R149.9m allocation for the 2025/26 financial year, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) is set to resurface key arterial routes, including parts of the M1 North and South, Sandton Highway, and other main roads that connect the vibrant business district to the rest of the city.
This targeted investment responds to the urgent need for safer, more reliable roads. The initiative includes proactive and reactive maintenance, road rehabilitation, and reinstatement of roads affected by excavations – particularly those caused by infrastructure repairs by Johannesburg Water (JW).

A visual conditions assessment (VCA) has identified roads in 'very poor' condition that require reconstruction or resurfacing, ensuring resources are focused where they are most needed.
JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi said: 'This increased budget, up from R105m last financial year, reflects our commitment to addressing roads that have deteriorated beyond repair and will restore the public's trust in our infrastructure. We are focused on delivering tangible improvements that will alleviate the daily challenges faced by commuters.'
MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene emphasised the importance of these upgrades. 'Johannesburg's road infrastructure, in some areas, was not designed for today's traffic volumes. Resurfacing main arterial roads is critical to ensuring safe and efficient mobility, especially on municipal highways and other key commuter routes, which are vital for the city's economic and social growth.'

Nyathi concluded: 'JRA will utilise asphalt produced at its Booysens Asphalt Plant to maintain quality and efficiency during resurfacing. Additionally, the agency is working closely with JW to reduce reinstatement backlogs by 75%, restoring roads and sidewalks affected by utility excavations.'
According to Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart, the money invested for road repairs has decreased compared to previous financial years. 'In previous financial years, the line item for potholes has been about R200m, but limited and uneven spending has led to JRA cherry-picking repairs, leaving many potholes unaddressed.
'The city has, generally, underinvested in road maintenance and pothole fixing, which is urgently needed. Streets like Gayre Drive, North Road, Westbrooke Drive in Sandown, Riverside Road in Glen Athol, and 2nd Street in Wynberg, by the Magistrate's Court, are in desperate need of pothole repairs.'

Pothole debris lingers on 10th Road in Kew as new pothole appears

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) completed repairs of a series of potholes along 10th Road in Kew on July 11, but residents say the job was left incomplete with heaps of repair debris still lining the road more than two weeks later. Now, to make matters worse, a new pothole has appeared in the exact same spot, less than a month since repairs were done, raising questions about the durability of the original repair. Local resident Thandi Nkosi said they have been waiting for the agency to return and clear the leftover gravel, tar chunks, and broken asphalt. The delay has caused, not only inconvenience, but also potential safety risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles navigating the street. 'We appreciate the initial repairs, but the debris is becoming dangerous. It looks like the job was only half-done. The road is messy, and the new pothole shows that the fix didn't last long. If you swerve to avoid it, you're in the oncoming lane. Also read: Johannesburg executive mayor declares war on potholes 'If a repaired road develops a new pothole in less than three weeks, something's been done wrong. Does JRA even inspect these repairs afterward? Who's held accountable when problems reappear this quickly?' Sandton Chronicle reached out to JRA for a comment, and updates will be provided once they become available. Partners in crime? Inside Gayton and Kenny Kunene's lucrative businesses

Gayton McKenzie has defended Kenny Kunene as 'innocent' after the latter was found at the home of KT Katiso Molefe, the alleged mastermind behind the murder of Oupa John Sefoka, also known as DJ Sumbody. The friends and business partners have come a long way after meeting at a Bloemfontein prison more than two decades ago. In 1997, Kenny Kunene – a qualified teacher – was convicted of running a Ponzi scheme and spent six years at the Grootvlei prison in Bloemfontein. During this time, he befriended Gayton McKenzie, who was serving time for armed robbery. The duo began hustling from behind bars by smuggling cash and food. Gayton and Kenny reunited after their release and vowed to go into business together. They initially sold the former's motivational book, The Choice , to schools around the country. Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene's rise from rags to riches has largely been due to their ability to start and sell successful businesses for a profit. The duo was mentored by businessmen Greg James and Gavin Varejes, and soon, they started their mining business, Central Rand Gold. Their mining business extended to other African countries. The duo co-founded ZAR Empire Holdings, which had dealings in entertainment, property, and mining. The company established the publishing group, X-Concepts, which is behind Gayton's multiple memoirs, including The Hustler's Bible. They founded the ZAR nightclub franchise, a hotspot for many celebrities in the early 2000s. The pals also founded Rivonia On Deck, another popular entertainment venue. For those who don't know: Kenny Kunene, a convicted criminal in his own right, is Gayton McKenzie's right-hand man and long time partner in 'business' and politics. — A Political Economist (@politicaleconZA) July 23, 2025 According to Kenny Kunene, Gayton and himself also sold fish and chicken from their car boots, marketed tickets to motivational talks to corporate companies, and also became security advisors to other businesses and the public. 'I went from sleeping on the floor to sleeping on the top floor of fancy hotels. I did it all!', Kenny said in his reality TV show, So What: Big Money, Big Dreams. In 2013, Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene cofounded the Patriotic Alliance. The political party was multiracial but particularly focused on serving the interests of the country's coloured communities. At the time, Gayton had 'poached' Kenny from the Economic Freedom Front (EFF), which he was a member of. He told Mail & Guardian at the time: 'I don't want to become a member of Parliament, nor does Kenny… want to work with the people on the ground.'
