Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government will allocate nearly RM600,000 to help gig workers in the e-hailing sector open accounts with the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said 11,109 applications had already been received from e-hailing drivers who wish to make contributions. 'I am pleased to announce that the State Government will provide nearly RM600,000 to assist those who have yet to open an EPF account,' he said at the Sabah Moto Day 8.0 programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah's parade ground, Sunday. Hajiji expressed satisfaction at the growing success of the annual motorcycling event, which this year drew around 60,000 riders and enthusiasts from across Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. 'The strong support from participants of all ages, races and religions reflects the unifying spirit of this gathering. We should see it positively, as such events contribute to Sabah's economy given the large turnout,' he said. He also urged participants to prioritise road safety, hoping the gathering would raise awareness among two-wheel motorsport fans. Highlighting the government's investment in young people, Hajiji said the state has spent RM1.33 billion on youth development initiatives between 2021 and 2025, including RM848.26 million for education assistance and RM485 million for skills and talent development. 'This is unprecedented for the state. We are committed to nurturing youth, who are our future leaders,' he added. Hajiji ended his speech by inviting the crowd to recite al-Fatihah for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. Co-organiser Datuk Mazlan Joehari Manan, who also chairs the Anti-Drug Squad, said the first day of the event began with a show of solidarity for the late Zara Qairina. He thanked the state government for its continued support towards youth initiatives and expressed hope that participants would apply the benefits gained to their peers. 'We will channel any support we receive back towards the state and the well-being of young people,' Mazlan said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
