Pregnant drivers warned over dangerous seatbelt mistake

I was heavily pregnant and running late. Then I hit a pothole – hard.
For a moment I felt like I was auditioning for Fast & Furious: Prenatal Drift.
Cue panic. I pulled over and Googled: 'Driving over pothole pregnancy'.
The results? Terrifying.
Phrases like 'placental abruption', 'seek immediate care', and 'avoid at all costs', jumped out at me.
There is no evidence that going over potholes harms the foetus.

Could one bump in the road, at low speed, really put my baby at risk?
Thankfully, no.
'There is no evidence that going over speed bumps or potholes at low, reasonable speeds harms the foetus,' says Associate Professor Stefan Kane, director of maternity services at the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne.
'There is no data linking this to miscarriage or preterm labour at normal speeds.'
But the real danger lies elsewhere.
'Sadly, motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of trauma-related maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality,' says Associate Professor Kane.
'Risk of injury increases during the second and third trimesters … However, proper seatbelt use significantly reduces the risk of the baby dying in crashes.'

Obstetrician Dr Guy Skinner often sees women pushing the sash belt up high behind them, thinking it's safer or more comfortable for the bump.
'There's no point wearing a seatbelt if it hasn't done its primary thing and that's to slow the human body from hitting the dashboard or seat in front of you,' he says.
And those maternity seatbelt adjusters sold online cheaply through businesses like Temu, Ebay and Facebook Marketplace? Remove from cart! The advice is to use a normal seatbelt properly.

Associate Professor Sjaan Koppel from the Monash University Accident Research Centre explains the right way to buckle up:
'The lap belt should be placed below the baby bump, snugly across the pelvis and upper thighs. Never across or above the abdomen,' she says.

'The shoulder (sash) belt should run between the breasts and over the collarbone. Not under the arm or behind the back. Ensure the belt is flat and not twisted.'
Beyond seatbelts, Dr Skinner says one of the most common questions he gets is: When should I stop driving?
Back in the day, it was common advice to stop driving after around 32–34 weeks because steering wheels didn't retract, and bumps didn't fit behind them.
Now, if you're carrying a single baby, it's usually safe to drive right up to the end of pregnancy. Multiples? You're more likely to be benched by 32 to 34 weeks, due to spatial logistics.
And what about airbags? Contrary to some fears, they're safe and protective, as long as your bump isn't pressed right up against the wheel.

Low-speed crashes, such as carpark fender-benders or knocking into poles, are surprisingly common during pregnancy.
'We see them every three to four weeks,' Dr Skinner says. 'It's probably due to some change in concentration in pregnant women.'
He claims minor bingles at low speed (under 20 km/h) are unlikely to cause concern.
So, while a pothole won't send you into labour, experts say pregnancy can change the way we drive, and not always for the better.
If it means easing into the Driving Miss Daisy era a little early? It might be the safest move, for mum and bub.

The 24-year-old is the only driver to bank points in every race this season, currently holding a slender nine-point edge over McLaren teammate Lando Norris in the fight for the 2025 crown. Piastri is on 284 points, ahead of Norris on 275, and with Max Verstappen a distant third on 187 points, the Aussie is now prepared to state it is 'very much a two-horse race'. McLaren are playing along to an extent, refusing to publicly voice any specific team rules, with the famous 'papaya rules' a simple mantra for the two studs to avoid crashing into each other and hurting the team. That scenario did play out when Norris collided with Piastri in Canada, leading to the Brit's only 'did not finish' of the season, while the Aussie came close when he attempted an audacious pass in the penultimate lap in Hungary. With the drought-breaking 2024 constructors' championship in McLaren's grasp, Piastri said there has been a noticeable shift in the team's approach, as he told Autosport. He also noted it's far too early to try to bank points, rather than chase outright victories, as he pursues this year's crown. 'I think there's definitely been some changes,' he said. 'Even still now it's too early to kind of just bank points and finish races for the sake of finishing races. 'You still need to try and put your best foot forward and score points. 'Obviously now in the drivers' championship it's very much a two-horse race, so there is kind of some one-on-one racing in some ways, which is probably a little bit of a change from what we've done previously. 'But a lot of what we've done previously has been to try and win constructors' championships and get the team the most points. 'When you're fighting for first and second, you're still getting the same amount of points. 'So there's probably a few changes with that, but a lot of the rules of engagement and the general philosophy of how we go racing is still very much the same.' With 10 races remaining in the schedule, there is still plenty to play out in the 2025 season. The steely focused Piastri understandably wheeled out the standard response when it comes to his approach for the rest of the season. The Victorian knows if he starts worrying about the drivers' standings for the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi, he could easily let his grasp on the title slip away. 'I think the saying of 'taking it race by race', it sounds boring and kind of is boring in some ways, but it is very true,' he explained. 'You can't worry about what's going to happen in Abu Dhabi and take your focus off what you're doing in the weekend, especially at the top of Formula 1. 'You've got to be on top of your game every single time and any focus you take away from that, it means you're not at the top of your game. 'So as clichéd as it is, it is genuinely about focusing on the race you're in, trying to score the most amount of points. 'You could say I need 18 points every weekend for the rest of the year, which is finishing second. 'But if you've got a clear opportunity to win the race and you don't take it, that's not a great way of going racing in my opinion. 'That's what I based my whole career off basically, leaving each weekend knowing that I've done the absolute maximum I can. Once the Dutch GP rolls around in two weeks' time, it begins a run of three races in four weeks and the only place to see every F1 race live is on Kayo Sports and Foxtel.

A brand-new house in Melbourne's north will be auctioned next month to raise funds for the My Room Children's Cancer Charity. The five-bedroom home at 36 Pasilla Circuit, Mickleham, was built by Henley Homes on a 412sq m land block donated by the Satterley Property Group. The 2025 Home for a Cure has been listed with $950,000-$1m price expectations. All proceeds from its sale will go towards My Room's efforts to help fund critical clinical care, family support services and research into rare and aggressive childhood cancers. The double-storey house features a kitchen fitted with 900mm stainless steel appliances, stone benchtops and a butler's pantry. A double-height void lets plenty of natural light in to the open-plan dining and living areas where sliding doors open to a covered outdoor space and large backyard. Upstairs, the main bedroom is equipped with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite with a double vanity and separate toilet. Downstairs, three other bedrooms each have their own ensuite while the guest suite comes with a walk-in wardrobe and private ensuite. The house, modelled on a design from Henley's Mainvue Collection, boasts a 7-star energy rating thanks to its double-glazed windows and energy-efficient appliances. The abode is located in Satterley's Botanical estate where more than 30ha of open spaces, a shopping village and sports oval are planned to be built in the future. The Mickleham house is the third time Henley Homes and Satterley have collaborated for the Home for a Cure campaign. Satterley Property Group has partnered with Home For A Cure since 2018, donating eight land lots for homes to be built upon. My Room's chief executive Margaret Zita said no. 36 Pasilla Circuit 'represents the power of community to make a real difference'. 'Every dollar raised from its auction will help us provide essential support to families facing the unimaginable,' Ms Zita said. 'That includes emotional counselling, financial relief, clinical care roles and world-leading research.' Henley Homes's general manager of completed homes Ben Griffiths said the Home for a Cure was one of the most meaningful projects the company was involved in. 'From the entire Henley team, we give a huge shout out to the volunteer trades and suppliers who have donated their time and resources in making this amazing build a reality,' he added. Satterley's Victoria and Queensland general manager Jack Hoffman said the Home for a Cure initiative brought out the best in the industry. 'We are incredibly proud to contribute land for such an important cause and look forward to seeing strong interest at the open for inspections,' Mr Hoffman said. Daniel Ricciardo has reportedly been treated for a minor injury in hospital after a dirt bike accident in north Queensland. Just days after his first public appearance since leaving Formula 1, Ricciardo suffered a collarbone injury while riding through the Daintree National Forest, reports Planet F1. He is reported to have been in good spirits while being treated for the injury. Having lived a largely private life since his brutal F1 axing last year, Ricciardo was in Queensland for a real estate conference on the Gold Coast, spruiking a heavy beard. 'Well, I haven't been shaving my face,' he said. 'The beard is my comfort right now. 'This year has been a bit of self-exploration. I lived this crazy high-speed life for so long, and this year I've sat into a little bit of stillness. 'I've had a lot of time, I've done some hiking. I was in Alaska a few weeks ago and didn't get mauled by a grizzly, which was a bonus. 'I've been trying to figure out who I am other than this racecar driver. 'I've come to appreciate the little things more and the meaning of the importance of family and friends. 'I've always been driven, and that sometimes leads you to being selfish, so I'm trying to learn to be a bit more selfless and become a better listener.'
