August 10 - Tennessee Titans running back Tyjae Spears is expected to miss a few weeks with a high-ankle sprain, head coach Brian Callahan told reporters Sunday.
Spears sustained the injury during Saturday's 29-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a preseason game.
He had three carries for minus-1 yard on Saturday for the Titans, who likely will rely on fellow running backs Julius Chestnut and Kalel Mullings to provide support for starter Tony Pollard.
Spears, 24, rushed for 312 yards and four touchdowns and added 30 catches for 224 yards and one score in 12 games (one start) last season for Tennessee.
He has rushed for 765 yards and six touchdowns in 29 career games (two starts) since being selected by the Titans in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Tulane.

Big-league-best Brewers chase sweep of Pirates, 12th straight win

August 13 - The surging Milwaukee Brewers will be looking for veteran right-hander Brandon Woodruff to continue his remarkable comeback when they go for their 12th consecutive victory on Wednesday against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates to wrap up the three-game series. Woodruff (4-0, 2.29 ERA), who missed all of the 2024 season following shoulder surgery, will be opposed by right-hander Mitch Keller (5-10, 3.86). The Brewers, who have won 14 of their past 15 games, chased Pirates ace Paul Skenes early and pounded out a season-high five homers in a 14-0 rout of the Pirates on Tuesday. Freddy Peralta allowed three hits over six scoreless innings for his major-league-best 14th win. Andrew Vaughn had a three-run homer while Christian Yelich and Caleb Durbin each had a two-run shot against the Pirates bullpen. Sal Frelick and Brice Turang had solo homers off Skenes, who entered with a big-league-best 1.94 ERA but was tagged for four runs on six hits in four innings. Milwaukee, which also had an 11-game winning streak from July 6-21, is the first team since the 2015 Toronto Blue Jays to have multiple winning streaks of 11 or more games in the same season. The Brewers are the first NL club with two such streaks since the 1935 Chicago Cubs. The Brewers, 26-4 over their past 30 games, improved to a major-league-best 75-44 and increased their lead in the NL Central to 7 1/2 games over the second-place Cubs, who lost 5-1 at Toronto on Tuesday. "After we lay our heads down on the pillow, tonight's game doesn't matter. It's about tomorrow and winning tomorrow," Turang said postgame. "It's just trying to win the game that day and they stack up." Woodruff has been dominant since coming off the injured list in early July, pitching at least six innings in five of his six starts with opponents hitting just. 139 against him. In his latest outing, Woodruff shook off a pair of early solo homers and allowed just one hit the rest of his seven innings to get the victory in a 3-2 win over the New York Mets on Friday. Woodruff is 7-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 17 career games, including 15 starts, against the Pirates. Turang extended his hitting streak to nine games. He is batting .351 with six homers and 12 RBIs over that span after managing only six homers in his first 105 games this year. Pittsburgh manager Don Kelly, who was ejected for arguing balls and strikes on Tuesday, said his team simply has to move on. "We have to find a way to come back tomorrow, have energy," Kelly said. "We've got a day game after a night game and come out and compete and find a way to win." Keller is 4-0 with a 3.50 ERA over his past eight starts. In his most recent outing, he allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings but did not get the decision in Pittsburgh's 3-2 comeback win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. Keller is 1-5 with a 4.99 ERA in 10 career starts vs. Milwaukee. He has faced the Brewers once this season, when he permitted one run in six innings during a no-decision in a 2-1 Pirates victory on May 24. Pirates center fielder Oneil Cruz was removed from the Tuesday game in the top of the sixth inning and was being evaluated for a head injury. He collided with left fielder Jack Suwinski on a fourth-inning double by Joey Ortiz. --Field Level Media

Tigers relying on bullpen in search of series win vs. White Sox

August 13 - The American League Central-leading Detroit Tigers will aim for a series victory against the last-place White Sox in Chicago on Wednesday behind a bullpen game. Manager A.J. Hinch said Troy Melton could be in line for extended duty for the Tigers, who surrendered 13 hits and seven walks (two of them with the bases loaded) in a 9-6 defeat on Tuesday. Detroit's Colt Keith hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning, but the blast wasn't enough to erase a handful of disappointing pitching performances. Codi Heuer, acquired at the trade deadline, allowed a home run in his 1 2/3 innings. Tommy Kahnle, who permitted two runs and got four outs, has been scored upon in eight of his past 11 outings. After pitching to a 1.77 ERA through June, Kahnle has seen his season ERA swell to 5.21. Hinch said the Tigers need Kahnle "to work his struggles out. Because he's an important cog." On the plus side for the Tigers, they have scored at least four runs in five of their past six games. Keith and Riley Greene both contributed a pair of hits on Tuesday. Chicago has lost seven of nine since starting 10-4 after the All-Star break. A 2-1 loss to the Tigers on Monday left the White Sox with a 9-26 record in one-run games. "I think we've seen a couple different examples of our group still continuing to learn how to win," White Sox manager Will Venable said. "There are little moments where we can continue to learn how to win, we can learn how to put teams away. I think that's just part of being a younger team that's continuing to grow and understand those things." Despite noting various shortcomings during crunch time, Venable has praised the overall poise of Chicago's rookies. Shortstop Colson Montgomery has homered in two of the last three games and has 10 homers in 33 games since joining the team in early July. Edgar Quero went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs as the designated hitter on Tuesday, and catcher Kyle Teel produced his second consecutive two-hit game. "The thing that has stuck out with all these guys that have come up this year is they, right from the beginning, they look like they feel like they belong," Venable said. "They've just got that confidence about them. They look like big-leaguers, they're walking around like big-leaguers. And at the same time, you know that they have a lot to learn and a lot of development in front of them. "And so, what's been great is watching them with the older guys, watching them with the coaches, watching them in meetings. And they're attacking this thing as if they've been around longer. Their growth has been really quick." Fellow rookie Shane Smith (3-7, 4.22 ERA) will get the start for the White Sox as he eyes his second home victory against the Tigers this season. Smith spaced three hits, two walks and six strikeouts over 5 1/3 scoreless innings to defeat Detroit on June 3. He is coming off a no-decision at Seattle on Thursday. Smith allowed two runs and four hits in five innings with one walk and a career-best eight strikeouts. Detroit leads the season series 6-3. --Field Level Media
