R1 billion lost: Cape Town port delays jeopardise apple and pear exports

The Western Cape's apple and pear industry is calling for the urgent privatisation of the Port of Cape Town, citing estimated losses of R1 billion in 2024 due to logistical inefficiencies and delays.

The Western Cape's apple and pear export industry is sounding the alarm after estimating that logistical bottlenecks and delays at the Port of Cape Town have cost the sector approximately R1 billion in 2024 alone.
Industry leaders are now calling for the urgent fast-tracking of the port's privatisation to prevent further losses and protect South Africa's market share in key global markets.
The urgent plea was made during a strategic discussion and site visit yesterday between the Western Cape Department of Mobility and key industry players, including Two-a-Day and its logistics partner, Link Supply Chain Management.
The meeting highlighted the critical, time-sensitive nature of fruit exports.
Roelf Pienaar, managing director of Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, articulated the challenge.
'We work in a complex, time-sensitive value chain. If a vessel to Europe, the United Kingdom, or the Far East is missed, the sale is gone. You don't get a second chance to deliver on time in a programme-driven market,' said Pienaar.
Pienaar added that the situation poses an existential threat to the industry.
'Logistics is the single biggest risk for us right now. If we can't get our product out, everything else, from on-farm innovation to market development, is compromised.'
To mitigate delays, Chris Petzer, Two-a-Day's operations director, explained that containers are often diverted to Port Elizabeth, a costly measure taken to avoid halting on-farm harvesting and packing.
'It's not sustainable, but sometimes it's the only option to prevent greater losses,' he said.

The ongoing inefficiencies, he stressed, have had a direct financial impact and have damaged the industry's reputation.
'When port operations are disrupted, it impacts product quality, increases costs, and damages our credibility with overseas buyers,' Knoetze said, before making a direct call to action.
'We urgently need to fast-track the privatisation of the Cape Town terminal to restore competitiveness.'
In response, the Western Cape Department of Mobility, represented by Corrine Gallant, deputy director-general, confirmed that measures are being taken to address both landside and waterside inefficiencies.
'We are working on both the landside and waterside inefficiencies,' Gallant said.
'We cannot afford more costs in the chain, our focus is on solutions that remove bottlenecks and protect jobs.'
However, industry representatives warned that time is running out. Gerhard van Heerden, also a director at Link Supply Chain Management, stressed the need for urgency from the port itself.
'The farmers, pack-houses, and exporters are investing in efficiency every day,' he said.
'Now we need the same urgency and commitment at the port, because without it, the entire value chain is at risk.'
This sentiment was echoed by Isaac Sileku, Western Cape Minister of Mobility, who emphasised the need for structured collaboration and swift execution to prevent further delays.
'We cannot afford to be reactive. We must have formal agreements and mechanisms in place so that when bottlenecks arise, we know exactly which button to press. Speed of execution is critical, our farmers and exporters cannot wait years for solutions,' Sileku said.

September 2025 SASSA Old-Age Grants will go ahead as usual in less than three weeks' time. Better still, after several back-to-back five-week cycles, the wait for September 2025 SASSA Old-Age Grants won't be as long. September 2025 SASSA Old-Age Grants are payable to beneficiaries on Tuesday 2 September 2025. It explained what may look like a R165 monthly deduction could be coming from a nefarious funeral policy provider posing as SASSA. Therefore, the government entity confirmed that it will never make a deduction from your grant monies with authorisation. A fourth payment date was introduced to stop delays following income verification. Older Person annual income may not exceed R107 800 (single) and R215 760 (married). These figures have been upped from R101 640 and R203 380, respectively. Which is way more than inflation, at 20%. Likewise, a SASSA Older Person beneficiaries' assets should not be valued higher than R1 524 600 (single) R3 049 200 (married). Once again, this is up from R1 438 800 and R2 877 600, respectively. Nevertheless, if you are unsuccessful, you have 90 days to lodge an appeal with the Department of Social Development (DSD) by clicking HERE. Beyond September 2025 SASSA Old-Age Grants, here are the remaining payment dates for the rest of the year. Gauteng man in a legal battle with BMW Financial Services as he's forced to pay over R1. 6 million for uncollected car

Farhaad Mahomed was concerned that the new car he purchased might have been test-driven by potential buyers after seeing it displayed in the dealership's showroom. A Gauteng business man is in a financial nightmare as BMW Financial Services have taken him to court to demand R1.6 million over a luxury vehicle he never collected. The turmoil began in late 2019 when Farhaad Mahomed, riding high on the success of his business, made a significant investment into a brand-new BMW X3M Competition destined to enhance his fleet. The 50-year-old from Lenasia in Johannesburg, bought the brand new car in November 2019 from SMG BMW Century City in Cape Town. To secure the car, he stated that the dealership required him to sign an undated finance contract even though the vehicle was still at the port of Durban. Before the deal was completed, Mahomed said he paid a hefty R200,000 deposit and BMW Financial Services financed the balance of over R1 million. Mahomed arranged for the vehicle to be delivered to his local BMW dealership, planning to pick it up in January 2020 so that it could be registered as a 2020 model. Little did he know, this decision would plunge him into a legal nightmare. "If I had fetched it immediately in December, it would have been registered as a 2019 model and I would have driven it for just 30 days, for me it didn't make sense. So we agreed that I'll be fetching the car on January 2, 2020," he said. As he was still waiting to collect the car, he noticed the car was advertised on various social media platforms after it was displayed in the dealership's showroom. He grew concerned that prospective clients might be test-driving it and asked for the advertisement to be taken down, but his request was not fulfilled. "I was not happy because this means anyone who came to the dealership had access to the car and would have potentially test driven it if they were interested in it. This means the car was no longer new but a demo car and I was not going to accept it." He provided IOL with an email sent to BMW, detailing his concern about the car being displayed in the showroom. In response, the sales manager explained that the car was in the showroom due to the basement parking being full. The manager also stated that it was improbable for Mahomed to be the vehicle's first driver, as new vehicles are typically driven multiple times before reaching their owners. "When the car is loaded onto a carrier at the plant, it is physically driven by a person. The same happens when the car is loaded onto a cargo vessel for the shipping of the car to South Africa. Once the vessel arrives in our harbor, another person physically drives the car off the vessel to be loaded onto a carrier that will transport the car to Midrand," read the reply. Still not satisfied with the response, Mahomed said he requested the footage to prove the car had not been driven while at the dealership, but he was informed that there were no cameras in the showroom and others were not working. "That's when I knew they were playing me, they couldn't even provide me with proof that the car remained stationery from the day they got delivery," he said.
