, Madhubala, her journey wasn't easy. She faced a lot of body shaming and later was also in the news for rumours of her relationship with
Raj Kapoor
when he was already married to Krishna Kapoor.
Her entry into films came at just 16, with the 1949 Tamil hit Vaazhkai. But her road to success wasn't always smooth — she endured body shaming early in her career. In her memoir Bonding, she recalled how Nagin director Nandlal Jaswantlal would humiliate her in public: 'You are too plump and still have a lot of baby fat. You have such a round face, that it fills the whole screen. Don't look like an idli.' The taunts often left her with 'tears shimmering in my eyes, all set to roll down.
'
Vyjayanthimala's career choices were overseen by her grandmother, Yadugiri Devi, who mistrusted Raj Kapoor's reputation with women. Even so, gossip linked the two actors, especially after Sangam. Vyjayanthimala denied any affair in her memoir, calling it a publicity stunt: 'Manufacturing the romance because of his hunger for publicity.'
But
Rishi Kapoor
's autobiography Khullam Khulla told a different story. He wrote about moving out of the family home with his mother, Krishna Kapoor, during the alleged affair: 'I remember moving into the Natraj Hotel on Marine Drive with my mom during the time papa was involved with Vyjayanthimala.

Vyjayanthimala and Raj Kapoor appeared together in just two films — Nazrana (1961) and Sangam (1964). Then, in 1968, at the height of her stardom, she stunned the industry by marrying the Kapoor family's doctor, Dr. Chamanlal Bali, and stepping away from films. Dance, however, remained a constant in her life through stage performances. Reflecting on her decision, she wrote, 'I made the wisest decision of my life, I left the films at the right time.
I have no regrets because I worked with some of the best.'

Abhishek Bachchan Has THIS Wish As Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan's Sholay Marks 50 Years
Sholay revolved around two ex-convicts, Jai and Veeru, who are hired by Thakur Baldev Singh, a retired policeman, to help nab a notorious dacoit named Gabbar Singh. As 'Sholay', the biggest blockbuster of Indian cinema, celebrates its Golden Jubilee, Abhishek Bachchan shared with IANS that he wishes to watch the iconic film on a 70 mm screen at the iconic Minerva theatre. The film features his father Amitabh Bachchan and mother Jaya Bachchan in the lead. When asked during an interview, 'Sholay will soon be completing 50 years. Have there been any conversations at the family dining table about the film? If so, which story or memory from Sholay tends to come up most often?" Abhishek replied 'Not really spoken about it but have discussed it with friends. My biggest tragedy is that I have never seen Sholay on 70 mm." He continued, 'I keep telling my friend Rohan (Rohan Sippy)—we've done three films together, and our fathers made 'Sholay' together—Please remaster it and we will go and watch it in Minerva. I really hope they re-release it so that we can experience it again in all its glory." Adding to it, he informed, 'Sholay was the first film to release an audio cassette featuring just its dialogues. The lines became so iconic that they put out a separate audio release for them." 'Sholay', the most iconic film of Hindi cinema, was released on August 15, 1975. Although it initially received a lukewarm response at the box office, it gradually gained momentum through word of mouth. The film is considered as one of the greatest movies in Hindi cinema for its grandeur, performances, technical brilliance, action, music and direction. It was top of the British Film Institute's 2002 poll of 'Top 10 Indian Films" of all time. The film was written by the legendary screenwriting duo Salim-Javed, and went on to become one of longest running films of Indian cinema. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
