Kodai Senga leaves with hamstring strain as Mets hang on for 4-3 win to sweep Nats
NEW YORK (AP) — Kodai Senga threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings Thursday before leaving with a hamstring strain in the New York Mets' 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals that completed a three-game sweep.
Senga (7-3) allowed one hit and one walk before getting hurt while making a leaping grab of Pete Alonso's high throw on CJ Abrams' grounder between first and second. Senga touched the bag with his right foot on the way down but stumbled upon landing and reached for the back of his right leg. He hopped a couple of steps before tumbling to the ground.
After being surrounded by a trainer, his interpreter, manager Carlos Mendoza and teammates, Senga walked off the field under his own power. He lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.47, but will be placed on the injured list.
Jeff McNeil stayed hot with a three-run homer in the first for the Mets, who have won six straight to improve to an MLB-best 45-24. Brandon Nimmo homered off the right field foul pole in the fifth.
The Nationals snapped a 22-inning scoreless streak by rallying for three runs in the ninth, when Luis García Jr. and Josh Bell hit RBI singles and García scored on a wild pitch before Edwin Díaz got José Tena and Keibert Ruiz to ground out to earn his 15th save.
Washington's Michael Soroka (3-4) gave up all four runs and struck out five in five innings.

Australia batter Steve Smith out of WTC final after breaking pinkie
LONDON (AP) — Australia batter Steve Smith will take no further part in the World Test Championship final after suffering a compound dislocation of his right pinkie on Friday. Smith was hurt at first slip trying to catch a thick edge by South Africa captain Temba Bavuma at Lord's. Many edges haven't been carrying to the slips cordon in the match, so Smith was standing closer than usual to the wickets, 14 meters behind Bavuma, and wearing a helmet when Mitchell Starc delivered the 138 kph short ball. Smith got his hands up but not fast enough to make the shoulder-high catch. He left the field immediately. He was taken to hospital for more treatment, a team statement said. It did not say how long he'll be sidelined, but the injury puts in doubt him going to the Caribbean after the WTC final for the three-test series against the West Indies starting on June 25. ____

World Cup skiers promised at least 10% rise in race prize money next season
GENEVA (AP) — Prize money across all World Cup disciplines will increase by at least 10% next season, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) said Friday. Superstars in Alpine skiing earn the most — Mikaela Shiffrin and Marco Odermatt each made a record $1 million in race prize money in the 2023 season — but top racers in ski cross and snowboard disciplines typically earn less than 100,000 Swiss francs ($123,000) for the winter. 'It is clear that we still have a lot to do when it comes to rewarding our athletes as they deserve,' FIS President Johan Eliasch said in a statement. FIS said it will guarantee a 10% increase and hopes that race organizers add an extra 10% 'on a voluntary basis.' 'This is an important step, but only another one in a long way ahead,' Eliasch said. In ski jumping, Daniel Tschofenig topped the men's prize money list last season with 372,550 Swiss francs ($459,000), and women's leader Nika Prevc earned almost 130,000 Swiss francs ($160,000). The most lucrative venue is storied Austrian resort Kitzbuehel which had a total prize fund last season of 1 million euros ($1.15 million) across a three-race weekend for men. ___
