
How shipping in the EU is driving the rapid loss of Arctic sea ice
Produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels in ship engines, black carbon is contributing to the rapid loss of Arctic sea ice.
Previous reports have only focused on vessels flying EU flags, overlooking the impact of ships travelling to and from EU ports.
'Our findings show that ships connected to EU trade, regardless of their flag, are major drivers of black carbon pollution in the Arctic,' says Liudmila Osipova, senior researcher at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), and lead author of its new study.
'Recognising these emissions in future policies could help the EU better align its climate goals with its real footprint in the Arctic.'
As Arctic shipping activity increases, so too are the associated black carbon (BC) emissions.
Between 2015 and 2021, BC emissions in the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)'s definition of the Arctic nearly doubled, according to the study.
In the more broadly defined Geographic Arctic, shipping emitted 1.5 kilotonnes (kt) of BC and 12 kt of CO₂ in 2021. About a quarter of these emissions occurred within the IMO definition of the Arctic, indicating a strong growth in BC emissions in the polar area, from 193 tonnes in 2015 to 413 tonnes six years later.
This growth trend is concerning, since one tonne of black carbon has a global warming effect equivalent to 900 tonnes of CO₂, as it absorbs more heat in the atmosphere.
BC's impact is particularly pronounced in the Arctic. When the sooty particles settle on snow or ice, they reduce the albedo of these surfaces, meaning they reflect less light and so melt faster.
This compounds the climate challenges in a region which is already heating up three to four times faster than the global average.
Despite its potent climate and health impacts - it is linked to lung cancer, respiratory illness, and cardiopulmonary disease - BC remains one of the most unregulated short-lived climate and air pollutants.
Brussels typically only accounts for the emissions from its EU-flagged ships in the Arctic. To give a truer picture of the pollution over which the bloc has control, ICCT has also totted up BC and CO₂ from EU-regulated ships, which answer to the EU Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system as they voyage between EU ports.
These vessels are the bigger polluters, it found. BC and CO₂ emissions from EU-regulated ships of at least 5,000 gross tonnage were nearly double those from EU-flagged ships in the IMO Arctic in 2021.
That year, nearly three-quarters of the ships operating in the Geographic Arctic and half of those in the IMO Arctic were navigating to or from EU ports.
To address a significant gap in its maritime regulation, the researchers say that EU policymakers could include BC among the pollutants measured and reported within the bloc's MRV system.
Beyond improved emissions tracking, there are various ways to reduce BC emissions, such as incentivising ships to use distillate instead of residual fuel, and encouraging the installation of diesel particulate filters on board.

Researchers develop new bracelet that can detect the date rape drug
One in three adult women across the EU have experienced sexual or physical assault, according to the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights. This includes what is known as drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA). Faced with these alarming statistics, a team of chemists from Portugal and Spain, led by Carlos Lodeiro Espiño of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, has presented a prototype of a paper bracelet equipped with a chemical sensor. At first glance, it looks like an ordinary festival wristband. In reality, it is a microscopic laboratory of its own, one that can detect the presence of the date rape drug Gamma-hydroxybutyrate, otherwise known as GHB, as well as other intoxicating substances, within a matter of seconds. The invention, which could hit European festivals and clubs as early as this year, has the potential to significantly reduce the number of sexual assaults. How does the wristband work? The lightweight and biodegradable bracelet conceals two miniature colourimetric sensors, one of which reacts to the presence of GHB. Simply wet a section of the band with a drop of drink. If it turns green, that indicates the presence of an unwanted substance. The entire chemical reaction takes a few seconds and the result is visible to the naked eye. "It's a product designed as a personal shield. It can work for up to five days, repeatedly testing different drinks," explains Professor Carlos Lodeiro Espiño, who led the research into the bracelet. Why is GHB so dangerous? GHB is colourless, odourless and metabolises quickly in the body. Just a few hours after ingestion, it can be virtually undetectable in standard tests. Victims often lose consciousness or memory of events, making subsequent investigation difficult. In Europe, up to a third of sexual assaults involving chemical agents take place precisely after the administration of GHB or its derivatives. From the laboratory to the club The project is a collaboration between researchers from Portugal and the University of Valencia in Spain. The research into the sensors took several months, building on 20 years of experience in optical detection methods. The first batches of bracelets have already made their way to concerts, festivals and popular clubs in Spain and Portugal. During the summer, when tourist traffic is at its highest and partying continues until dawn, the risk of drinks being spiked increases significantly. If the project gains enough traction, its creators plan to expand distribution to more European countries. "This armband will not solve the problem of sexual violence, but it can play an important role in its prevention," the researchers emphasise. Price and availability The cost of a wristband is expected to be between €3 and €5. Additionally, packaged versions containing multiple bracelets will bring the cost of daily protection down to less than €1. However, the creators hope that funding will be provided by event organisers, local authorities and public institutions - as part of "safe festival" programmes. Other tests are available The wristbands are just one option, as there are other technological and chemical solutions that work. For instance, disposable test strips that can be dipped into a drink are on sale and indicate the presence of certain drugs. Also popular are discreet stickers that change colour when they come into contact with a beverage. A team of researchers in South Korea has developed a temporary tattoo, the design of which will instantly change colour from yellow to red when in contact with a "rape pill". Elsewhere, students in the department of materials engineering at North Carolina State University have developed a nail polish that changes colour upon contact with substances that render a person vulnerable to sexual assault. Not just a test - a deterrent Although the results obtained from the bracelet are not currently treated as evidence in court, the mere fact of having it can be a deterrent to potential perpetrators. In the Valencia region, following the introduction of the wristbands, the number of reports of attempted intoxication at festivals dropped to almost zero. Researchers are already working on a second generation of the device, which would gain formal recognition from law enforcement agencies across Europe.

Europe says it leads the world in Earth Observation. But what is it?
The heavy-lift launcher, developed over a decade by the European Space Agency (ESA) and ArianeGroup, was launched from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana this Tuesday. After just over an hour, the satellite separated from the rocket and began its journey around the Earth. With this new satellite the EU strengthens its position as a leader in Earth observation, according to Andrius Kubilius, EU Commissioner for Defence and Space. What is Earth observation and why this matters? Earth observation is the process of gathering information about our planet's physical, chemical and biological systems – Europe relies on the Sentinel satellites from the Copernicus programme managed by the European Space Agency. From measuring Arctic ice melt to mapping deforestation, the technology allows scientists to see changes in the environment with great precision. The new satellite, Sentinel-5A, will be operated by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and is designed to deliver high-quality data for forecasting extreme weather, tracking greenhouse gas emissions and monitoring ocean temperatures. 'Extreme weather has cost Europe hundreds of billions of euros and tens of thousands of lives over the past 40 years,' said EUMETSAT Director-General Phil Evans to Euronews. This launch is a 'major step forward in giving national weather services sharper tools to save lives, protect property, and build resilience against the climate crisis.' Timo Pesonen, Commission Director General for Defence Industry and Space said on social media his hope that the new Sentinel satellite will participate to track air quality and emissions worldwide to support EU policies like the Methane Strategy and Air quality Directive. Europe's independent path to space The satellites programme Copernicus is the world's most advanced fleet of Earth observation – however the EU lacked its own capacity to send those satellites into space. By coupling world-class satellite technology with independent launch capacity, Europe is positioning itself as a leader in both the science and infrastructure of Earth observation. Until now, Europe's space ambitions faced this practical challenge to get satellites into orbit without depending on outside players. With Russia's Soyuz rockets no longer an option, the continent had become increasingly reliant on SpaceX, Elon Musk's US-based company, for launches – an embarrassing ally.

July was Earth's third-warmest on record, EU scientists say
The world experienced its third-warmest July on record this year, the European Union agency that tracks global warming said Thursday, July 7, after two consecutive years when temperatures soared past previous records. Despite a slightly lower global average temperature, the scientists said extremes – including heat and deadly floods – persisted in July. "Two years after the hottest July on record, the recent streak of global temperature records is over – for now. But this doesn't mean climate change has stopped," said Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service. "We continued to witness the effects of a warming world." The EU monitoring agency said new temperature records and more climate extremes are to be expected unless greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere are brought down. On July 25, Turkey recorded its highest-ever temperature of 50.5 degrees Celsius as it battled wildfires. While not as hot as July 2023 or July 2024, the hottest and second-warmest on record, the Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that the planet's average surface temperature last month was still 1.25 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial period, before humans began the widespread burning of oil, gas and coal. It said the average global surface air temperature reached 16.68 degrees in July, which is 0.45 degrees above the 1991-2020 average for the month. Greenhouse gases released from the burning of fossil fuels like gasoline, oil and coal are the main cause of climate change. Despite a somewhat cooler July, the 12-month period between August 2024 and July 2025 was 1.53 degrees above pre-industrial levels, exceeding the threshold set in 2015 to limit human-caused warming to 1.5 degrees. Copernicus is the EU's earth observation system based on satellite and on-the-ground data collection. Britain rejoined the climate agency in 2023. Julien Nicolas, a senior Copernicus scientist, said it was important to view last month's decrease in the context of two anomalous years in terms of warming. "We are really coming out from a streak of global temperature records that lasted almost two years," Nicolas said. "It was a very exceptional streak." He added that as long as the long-term warming trend persists, extreme weather events will continue to happen.
