Crypto Daybook Americas: Bitcoin Traders Deleverage on Steady Fed Rate Outlook

Yahoo22-02-2025

By Francisco Rodrigues (All times ET unless indicated otherwise)
Crypto traders are deleveraging after Wednesday's FOMC minutes showed the Fed is looking to hold rates steady until inflation improves and discussed pausing or slowing the balance sheet runoff.
Still, the yield on the 10-year Treasury dropped and the dollar weakened. Cryptocurrencies are higher, with the CoinDesk 20 Index up 1.4% and bitcoin 1.2% over 24 hours. The gains follow remarks by Czech National Bank Governor Ales Michl, who reiterated the case for bitcoin as a reserve asset, and President Donald Trump saying he'd ended 'Joe Biden's war on Bitcoin and crypto.'
Bitcoin traders are taking a wait-and-see approach as waning demand, a lack of blockchain activity and faltering liquidity inflows point to potential pullback to $86,000. It's currently over $97,000. Their stance is visible not only in declining volatility, but also a significant drop in open interest.
Open interest on bitcoin futures contracts has fallen below $60 billion from nearly $70 billion in late January, Coinglass data shows. The decline comes amid what appears to be an unraveling of the memecoin craze as recent struggles, such as Argentina's Libra debacle, dampened enthusiasm.
'Right now, the market is in a bit of a cooldown phase,' David Gogel, VP of strategy and operations at the dYdX Foundation, told CoinDesk. 'Bitcoin's been holding up, but after failing to break past $105k in January, we've seen capital inflows slow down and speculative assets like Solana and memecoins take a hit.'
That hit is visible in the aggregate open interest for futures contracts for SOL, the Solana blockchain's native token. OI dropped from around $6 billion late last month to around $4.3 billion now, according to data from TheTie. Solana is one of the leading networks for memecoins.
'The market should stay attuned to broader macro-drivers and geopolitical developments that could trigger moves,' Wintermute OTC trader Jake O told CoinDesk. These geopolitical developments include rising tensions between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that led to a not-so-subtle public exchange.
Declining leverage and a shift away from riskier plays suggest the market may be entering a new phase. What that actually entails remains to be seen. Stay alert!

PI, the native token of the Pi Network, debuted at $1.70 and immediately rose to $2.00 before losing 50% of its value in the next two hours.
The network claims to have 60 million users. There are fewer than 1 million active wallets.
Based on a self-reported circulating supply figure of 6.3 billion, PI currently has a market cap of $7.8 billion.
The premise behind Pi Network is a blockchain that allows users to mine tokens on their smartphones. It captured a considerable amount of attention from retail traders and has drawn comparison to viral tokens from previous cycles like SafeMoon.
Token holders face the risk of a lack of liquidity. The token's most liquid exchange is OKX, but 2% market depth — the amount of capital required to move the price by 2% in either direction — is between $33K and $60K. This means an order of say $100K would shift the market considerably to present volatile trading conditions.
BTC volatility on derivatives has reached a monthly low, declining from an annualized 36.09% to 28.43%.

Roughly $1.5 billion worth of BTC and ETH options are set to expire tomorrow, with almost $5 billion expiring in a week's time.
The total open interest across all trading pairs on retail centralized exchanges has risen by 2.10% on the day to $80.8 billion.

‘No Turnaround in Sight,' Says Wedbush About GameStop Stock

GameStop (NYSE:GME) is known for its fanbase of rabid retail investors, but the love is not one the company seems to reciprocate. For the past three years, the struggling video game retailer has failed to hold a conference call or provide guidance when releasing quarterly reports. Confident Investing Starts Here: Easily unpack a company's performance with TipRanks' new KPI Data for smart investment decisions Receive undervalued, market resilient stocks right to your inbox with TipRanks' Smart Value Newsletter With the company poised to report F1Q25 results tomorrow (June 10), Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter expects 'no improvement in their attitude toward investors.' But what about the actual results? For the quarter, Pachter expects net sales of $750 million, representing a 14.9% year-over-year drop, and EPS of $0.08. That compares to consensus expectations of $754 million and $0.04, respectively. Industry-wide, both hardware and software sales declined y/y, though software held up better thanks to a strong release lineup during the quarter. Hardware sales saw a sharp y/y downturn, largely because the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have been on the market for several years now. However, Pachter expects hardware demand to rebound next quarter with the launch of the Switch 2. In Q1, profits should get a boost from a stronger software mix, while higher interest income – driven by recent share offerings – will help offset ongoing operating losses. Taking a leaf out of the MicroStrategy playbook, GameStop has also begun accumulating Bitcoin and now owns 4,710 BTC. That said, MicroStrategy trades at roughly 1.75 times the value of its Bitcoin holdings, indicating that investors assign it a premium beyond just its crypto assets. In comparison, GameStop trades at about 2.4 times the value of its cash, which now includes Bitcoin. This suggests investors are giving GameStop a similar kind of Bitcoin-related premium, even though its core retail business is being implicitly valued at just $8 per share. What Pachter finds 'baffling' is that GameStop's Bitcoin holdings are tiny compared to MicroStrategy's – just about 1% as much. Yet both stocks are receiving similar levels of crypto-related investor enthusiasm. While GameStop has seen some 'modest success' with its move into trading cards, Pachter thinks there's 'no potential for a rebound in GameStop's core business,' but that hasn't really mattered here. 'Despite a complete lack of an articulated strategy, GameStop has consistently been able to capitalize on the existence of 'greater fool' willing to pay more than twice its asset value for its shares—and so far, they've been right,' Pachter said. But in his view, GME shares are trading 'at a level that ignores the company's many challenges ahead.' As such, ahead of the print, Pachter rates GME shares an Underperform (i.e., Sell), along with a $13.5 price target, suggesting the shares will shed 54% of their value over the next year. Recent survey shows the fear Americans have over inflation decreased last month

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The fear Americans have over inflation decreased last month, according to a recent survey. This being prompted by the president's decision to back off on his tariff proposals. Mass. clean cement company hopes to win back $87M federal award With tariff threats easing and reports of trade negotiations heating up, this survey by the Fed shows people are starting to worry less about inflation. In the New York Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Expectations, inflation expectations declined in May. This comes after surging higher in March and April over concerns about tariffs. Right now, inflation stands at 2.3%. 'It's good, because the economy is struggling as it already is. So it's good for us to see those numbers dwindle,' said Angel Amaro of Springfield. The improving expectations come as the tariff policy has changed. Initial tariffs were set at 10 percent on all US imports, and dozens of nations faced reciprocal duties. President Donald Trump later backed off on the tariffs, opting for a 90-day negotiation period that ends in July. While inflation is coming down, AIC economics professor John Rogers explains it's still above the Fed's 2% annual target rate. 'It's sort of that last mile is difficult to get to, but it's it's going in the right direction,' said Rogers. The survey showed that expectations dipped across most price groups, but saw food prices rising to 5.5 percent over the next year. Rogers says the survey also showed people are optimistic about the job market. 'They feel that the number of people who feel that their jobs are at under threat or at stake is going down. So that's good news. So that gives people confidence if they're confident, they go out and spend money, it's consumer spending that keeps the economy humming along,' added Rogers. And Rogers noted that the Bond market is another area for people to question, asking themselves whether the US can service all of its debt. He says it's up to $37 trillion, and it's growing at almost $2 trillion every year. The survey also shows increased gas prices easing to just 2.7 percent. Medical care, college education, and rent increases were also lower every month.
