CEOs of refineries appreciate resolution of sales tax issue
The meeting underscored the government's firm commitment to ensuring energy security and facilitating refinery upgrade projects worth over USD 6 billion, which are critical to modernising Pakistan's refining infrastructure. The resolution of the sales tax issue marks a significant milestone in creating a conducive environment for investment and operational efficiency in the oil refining industry.
The CEOs lauded the Petroleum minister's proactive approach and the PM's personal efforts/support in addressing key challenges faced by the sector. They reiterated their commitment to advancing refinery upgradation projects in line with the prime minister's vision for enhancing fuel quality, reducing emissions, and promoting clean energy solutions.
Speaking on the occasion, Federal Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik emphasised that the government is fully dedicated to fostering a sustainable energy ecosystem.
'The steps to address the sales tax issue reflects our unwavering resolve to support the refining sector, which plays a pivotal role in Pakistan's energy security and economic growth. The refinery upgrades will not only enhance production efficiency but also align with our goal of transitioning toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources,' he stated. Furthermore, he highlighted that policy consistency is the corner stone for viability of any sector, fostering investor confidence.
The refinery upgradation projects, once completed, will significantly improve fuel standards, reduce reliance on imported petroleum products, and contribute to environmental sustainability by producing Euro-V compliant fuels. This initiative is at heart of the government's broader strategy to strengthen the energy sector and ensure long-term economic stability through foreign investments.
The delegation included Zahid Mir-CEO Pakistan Refinery Limited, Irtiza Qureshi - MD PARCO, Adil Khattak - CEO Attock Refinery Limited, Amir Abbasi - CEO Cynergico, and Asad Hasan - CEO National Refinery Limited.

China's yuan firms, focus turns to US monetary policy
SHANGHAI: China's yuan edged up against the dollar on Monday, as investors awaited the US Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium later this week for more policy clues and its implications for global currency markets. As of 0339 GMT, the onshore yuan was 0.03% firmer at 7.1808 per dollar, while its offshore counterpart was up about 0.1% in Asian trade at 7.1830. Prior to market opening, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate at 7.1322 per dollar, its strongest since November 6, 2024 and 471 pips firmer than a Reuters' estimate of 7.1793. The spot yuan is allowed to trade 2% either side of the fixed midpoint each day. The Chinese currency has been tracking the dollar's movements in recent weeks on prospects of a Fed pivot on monetary policy. Markets are closely monitoring Fed Chair Jerome Powell's remarks at the annual Jackson Hole meeting to gauge chances of an imminent rate cut in September, traders said. A Fed rate cut could pressure the dollar and lift other major currencies, including the yuan. Markets are now pricing in an 84% chance the Fed would ease rates by a quarter point next month, down from 98% last week, after a raft of data including a jump in US wholesale prices last month and a solid increase in retail sales figures dimmed the prospect of an oversized 50-basis-point cut. The PBOC's firmer-than-expected guidance underscores its commitment to maintaining currency stability, as reiterated in its latest quarterly monetary policy implementation report, Goldman Sachs economist Xinquan Chen said. 'We expect the central bank to guide a gradual appreciation via the USD/CNY fixing and avoid abrupt moves,' Chen said, adding that weaker US data or Fed rate cuts could further drive the yuan's appreciation. Separately, markets will monitor a meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who will be joined by some European leaders, as Washington presses Ukraine to accept a quick peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years.

‘US-Canada relations'
This is apropos a letter to the Editor from this writer carried by the newspaper yesterday. It is important to note that until recently, the two countries were bound by one of the strongest economic partnerships in the world. In 2024, total goods trade between them reached USD 761.8 billion, with US exports to Canada worth USD 349.9 billion and imports from Canada at USD 411.9 billion. Agriculture alone accounted for USD 28.4 billion in US exports, including nearly USD 800 million in dairy. Canada sent USD 124 billion worth of energy, machinery, and vehicles to the United States, while the USMCA trade agreement favored US dairy producers by granting 3.6 percent tariff-free access to Canada's USD 15 billion dairy market and removing restrictions that had long frustrated American farmers. This trade was not just numbers—it represented communities, livelihoods, and a shared prosperity that outsiders often described as two halves of one whole. That reality began to unravel early in President Trump's second term when he abruptly imposed tariffs on Canadian goods, starting at 10 percent and then climbing to 35 percent, with threats of even higher duties on dairy. In public speeches, he floated the idea of Canada becoming the 'cherished 51st State' of the United States. The comments were not taken lightly in Ottawa. Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that 'Canada is not for sale and will never be the 51st state.' Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the remarks as humiliating, while Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland called the US actions 'economic warfare.' Sadiq underscores need for tree-plantation to combat pollution, climate change
ISLAMABAD: On the occasion of Tree Plantation Day, Speaker National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq underscored the urgent need to adopt tree plantation as a national obligation in order to combat the growing threats of environmental pollution and climate change. The speaker noted that unchecked deforestation has led to increasingly severe environmental consequences, including torrential rains, soil erosion, floods, air pollution, and unpredictable weather patterns. These challenges, he stressed, demand immediate and coordinated action to ensure a cleaner, safer environment for the generations to come. Highlighting the multifaceted benefits of trees, Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Sunday stated that trees not only supply oxygen but also serve as a cornerstone for ecological stability. He said they play a critical role in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and preserving the natural beauty of our planet. He called upon the nation to transform tree plantation into a continuous and collective movement, urging every citizen to contribute actively. 'A green and thriving Pakistan requires joint efforts from both the government and the public. We must launch large-scale plantation drives across schools, colleges, villages, and urban areas to move toward environmental self-sufficiency,' he said. The speaker further emphasised that planting saplings is only the first step; ensuring their survival through regular care and monitoring is equally important. 'Only then can these saplings grow into strong trees that support the ecological system,' he said. He concluded that sustainable development and a healthy society are achievable only when individuals acknowledge tree plantation as a shared responsibility and actively participate in preserving the environment. Deputy Speaker National Assembly Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah also in his message marking Tree Plantation Day, highlighted that tree plantation is not merely an environmental necessity, but also an integral part of our religious teachings and cultural values.
