Mahanadu takes off on a grand note
Kadapa: Mahanadu, the three-day annual conclave of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), commenced on a grand note here on Tuesday, drawing significant attention as it is being held for the first time in Kadapa, a district historically considereda stronghold of the YSRCP.
Party national president and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated the three-day event. Upon his arrival, Naidu toured a around a digital photo exhibition titled 'NTR Gallery and Mana Chandranna', showcasing the life and legacy of party founder NT Rama Rao and significant moments from his own political journey. He also visited a blood donation camp organized by party leaders at the venue. The Mahanadu conclave officially began with Chief Minister Naidu lighting the lamp in front of a photograph of party founder NTR, followed by the singing of 'Maa Telugu Talliki', an ode to Mother Telugu. During the opening session, TDP leader Somisetti Venkateswarlu presented a solemn account of party leaders and activists who lost their lives during the previous YSRCP regime, stating that approximately 1,030 TDP members were killed. In his welcome address, TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao highlighted the historical significance of Kadapa hosting Mahanadu, anticipating that it would capture the attention of Telugu people worldwide.
Following the welcome address, a politburo member read the party secretary's report, setting the stage for Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's inaugural speech.
The post-lunch session of the first day saw several ministers and party leaders addressing the gathering. The initial day of Mahanadu primarily focused on crucial party affairs, including discussions on organizational structure, future action plans, and the party's fundamental principles. Mahanadu is expected to deliberate on 14 key resolutions over the next two days, encompassing governance achievements, vision-based initiatives, and the government's accomplishments in its first year.

Andhra Pradesh government approves 10-hour daily workday; workers' unions protest
VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh's TDP-led govt has decided to amend labour laws to increase mandatory work hours from nine to 10 a day in all private firms and factories. The move is aimed attracting more investments and industries but has drawn fire from trade unions who argue that the move will turn workers into "slaves". The N Chandrababu Naidu-led cabinet has cleared the latest amendments to the labour code. "Govt has decided to amend these sections as part of its Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) policy. The relaxation of rules will help attract more investments," said information and public relations minister K Pardhasaradhi. CPM state secretary V Srinivasa Rao condemned the move and demanded its withdrawal. "The state is under pressure from central govt to amend rules to appease big industrialists. These amendments will only make the workers slaves," Rao alleged. He pointed out that the Andhra govt had taken this "unfortunate decision" when the entire workforce in the country was getting ready for a strike on July 9 against amendments to labour laws. Under Andhra Pradesh Factories Act, no adult worker shall be subject to work for more than nine hours in a day. The Act prescribes a half-an-hour interval after continuous work for five hours in the total slot of nine hours. Unions fear workers would end up putting in over 12 hours daily if the factory managements confine them two hours past the scheduled time. The Naidu-led cabinet has also decided to amend the rules related to overtime (OT) and night shifts. Women workers are now allowed night shifts. According to rules, employees are entitled to an additional paid holiday in lieu of the night shift. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, the facility will now be granted at the discretion of the management. The overtime schedule has also been increased to 144 hours from 75 hours. This means workers will be entitled to get additional wages in the form of overtime only after working 144 hours. The existing laws prohibit working in overlapping schedules to reduce the burden on the worker. However, Andhra govt has left the decision to the management. "Increasing work hours will impact overall health of workers and ultimately performance. It is not a wise move to force a human being to work more than the prescribed eight hours a day," Dr T Seva Kumar, a general physician, said.

Council demands appointment of GVMC Commissioner
Visakhapatnam: The demand for the appointment of GVMC Commissioner for the civic body united not just the YSRCP public representatives but also the public representatives of alliance parties at the council meeting. Organised for the first time in Visakhapatnam on Friday after Peela Srinivasa Rao took charge as GVMC Mayor, the YSRCP corporators entered the council hall displaying placards highlighting the same demand. For the first time, the alliance corporators extended support to the YSRCP corporators in appointing the GVMC Commissioner. YSRCP MP Golla Babu Rao raised the issue in the meeting and it was supported by Visakhapatnam north constituency P Vishnu Kumar Raju. 'With Visakhapatnam being one of the most recognised cities across the world, it has been months since the GVMC Commissioner was appointed,' the MLA mentioned. YSRCP corporators wondered how the city could be considered as a financial capital of Andhra Pradesh if the GVMC Commissioner itself is yet to be appointed. 'It is practically difficult for district Collector and GVMC in-charge Commissioner MN Harendhira Prasad to focus on the corporation as he is quite busy with administration engagements,' they stated. Speaking at the council meeting, TDP State president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao assured that the appointment of the new Commissioner for the corporation would be taken to the notice of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and efforts will be taken to appoint in the next few days. 'Compared to the corporation budget in North Eastern states, GVMC is allocated with a higher budget. Efforts will be taken to appoint a young and capable Commissioner for it,' Palla Srinivasa Rao assured. Meanwhile, ward corporators explained issues in their respective wards to Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao and appealed to him to resolve them at the earliest by visiting the wards. During the meeting, Ward 20 corporator Muvvala Lakshmi Suresh protested by climbing on a chair. She alleged that the coalition party leaders had occupied a park in her ward. However, Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao warned her that action would be taken if she did not step down from the chair. Announcing that a council meeting will be held once in every 45 days, the Mayor underlined that equal opportunity will be given to all corporators in the council meeting irrespective of the party they belong to. 'Also, I will be available for the corporators on all working days and they can get their problems resolved,' the Mayor assured.
