Lewandowski passes century as champions Barca sign off in style
SPAIN - La Liga champions Barcelona celebrated a successful season with a 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday in their final match, with Robert Lewandowski netting twice to pass his 100 goal milestone for the club.
The veteran Polish forward, 36, reached 27 league goals for the season, although he finished behind Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe on 31.
Barcelona wrapped up a domestic treble with Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cups wins, while fourth-place Athletic also had a fine season and returned to the Champions League for the first time in 11 years.
Athletic defender Oscar de Marcos made his 570th and final appearance for the club, behind only Jose Angel Iribar, a goalkeeper who played 614 times in the 1960s and 70s, in the club's history.
Even Iribar might not have saved Lewandowski's opener after the striker was fed by Fermin Lopez, brilliantly scooping over current Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon to put Barca ahead and rack up the Catalans' 100th league goal of the season.
It also brought up a century of goals for Lewandowski in a Barcelona shirt since joining in 2022 from Bayern Munich, and another was soon to follow.
Three minutes later Lewandowski nodded in at the back post after a corner was flicked into his path.
"I am very happy, very proud to be part of this team, this club, it's been something amazing," Lewandowski told Barca One.
"I try to do my best, not only with goals but my attitude on and off the pitch -- and there are so many young players we have to take care of them.
"We did something great (this season) but we know we can still do a lot (more) things."
Lewandowski missed two good chances in the second half as Barca tried to stretch their lead and sign off in style.
In the Barcelona goal, Inaki Pena showed sharp reactions to tip a ball against the bar as a Pau Cubarsi deflection headed towards his own goal.
Barcelona's 17-year-old star Lamine Yamal forced a smart save at his near post from Simon.
The Catalans got their third when Dani Olmo won and then converted a penalty in stoppage time.
After the game De Marcos gave a speech to fans at the San Mames and was thrown into the air by his team-mates.
"I just want to thank everyone who has been there on (my) path," said the 36-year-old defender, who played 16 seasons at the club.
"Next season I will be in the stands, as just another Athletic fan.
"And I am sure that someone who is watching today, will be here on the pitch, representing us as Athletic."

Earlier Alexander Sorloth showed once again why he is such a dangerous option off the bench for Atletico Madrid as he came on to score a hat-trick in under half-an-hour in a 4-0 win at Girona.
Diego Simeone's side continued their Club World Cup preparations in a dead rubber league match at Montilivi, with Atletico locked into third place and Girona safe from relegation.
Introduced in the 62nd minute for Antoine Griezmann, Sorloth broke the deadlock after 68 minutes.
Clement Lenglet extended Atletico's lead before Sorloth struck two more late on to reach 20 La Liga goals, 12 of those as a substitute.
Sorloth hit four goals earlier this month against Real Sociedad, with the first three of those scored by the 11th minute, making it the earliest hat-trick in La Liga history.
"La Liga is over but not the season," said Simeone, looking ahead.
"We will rest now and from June 2 get back to training to focus on the Club World Cup."

Flemming Berg owes Sundowns fans answers

It cannot be business as usual after the fiasco of the two-legged CAF Champions League final defeat to Pyramids FC. Since the Dane arrived at Chloorkop in 2022, he has deliberately stayed away from the media. Aside from a few brief press conference appearances and in-house interviews, Berg has never meaningfully engaged the public on his football philosophy or his mandate at the Brazilians. ALSO READ: Sundowns legend wants Cardoso and Berg gone after CAF failure I have previously raised this issue, insisting that the Masandawana faithful deserve better. They deserve to know the direction in which he is taking the club. From what I understand, he makes no secret of the fact that he doesn't care what the outside public thinks of him. Problematic attitude That kind of attitude is not only problematic, it also deepens the disconnect between the club and its sporting director. Engaging the fans through various media platforms would go a long way in calming the storm that followed their 2024/25 Champions League final shock defeat. Fans are understanding and they will support him if they feel that he is genuinely listening, rather than speaking at them through short press clippings. In his first three full seasons in charge after being officially announced as the sporting director in April 2022, Berg has delivered three Premiership titles. He may also claim the African Football League triumph, but what the fans truly crave is the CAF Champions League. Under his leadership, Sundowns have lost three domestic cup finals, in addition to last Sunday's champions league decider. On that basis alone, his tenure has been somewhat underwhelming. ALSO READ: Agent confirms exit of two Sundowns players Berg now finds himself alienating a growing number of Sundowns supporters with some of his decisions. The outrage over the champions league defeat has been simmering beneath the surface for some time. The first major frustration was the decision to part ways with Rulani Mokwena, who came close to completing an unbeaten season. Berg may not have absolute power to make changes, but he is a central figure in football decisions at the Betway Premiership champions. It's clear that Mokwena's main shortcoming was his failure to deliver Africa's most prestigious club competition. If that is the yardstick by which success is measured, then surely the current situation can't be allowed to continue following the loss to Pyramids FC. Berg now faces a significant decision, and so does the club because this is a problem of their own making. Sundowns at the World Club Cup While I don't expect much from Sundowns at the FIFA Club World Cup, a poor showing will not only push supporters over the edge, but also intensify the scrutiny of Berg's time in South Africa. I have already shared my views on the ill-advised omission of club captain Themba Zwane, so I won't revisit that here. The root cause of the growing discontent among the club's loyal fan base appears to point in one direction: the office of the sporting director.

Chelsea win race to sign Ipswich striker Delap

Chelsea beat off competition from Premier League rivals to sign English striker Liam Delap from Ipswich on Wednesday for a reported fee of £30 million ($41 million) Delap, 22, scored 12 Premier League goals during his sole season at Portman Road but could not prevent Ipswich making an immediate return to the Championship. Manchester United and Everton were also reportedly willing to meet the buyout clause in the England under-21 international's contract. Chelsea's Delap 'can see the trajectory' But Chelsea have won the race for the former Manchester City forward, bolstering their attacking options ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States, starting later this month. They finished the season strongly, securing a top-five spot on the final day of the season but were hamstrung by their lack of a clinical number nine. Senegal international Nicolas Jackson scored just 10 times in 30 Premier League appearances, while Christopher Nkunku looks set to leave the club after an underwhelming two-year spell. Delap, the son of former Stoke midfielder Rory Delap, began his career at Manchester City but struggled to break into Pep Guardiola's star-studded first team. After loan spells in the second tier with Stoke, Preston and Hull, he was snapped up by Ipswich in a deal worth up to £20 million after they won promotion to the Premier League a year ago. Delap was one of the few success stories for the Tractor Boys during a difficult season as they were relegated back to the Championship with just 22 points. Chelsea will face Flamengo, LAFC and ES Tunis in the group stages of the Club World Cup, which gets underway on June 14.
