Mega Eviction Drive To Begin On Assam-Nagaland Border, Over 100 Bulldozers And Excavators Deployed
Assam is set to initiate one of its largest eviction operations in Uriamghat on the Assam-Nagaland border to evict alleged minority settlers from the 13,921-hectare land of Rengma Reserve Forest.
Over 10,000 people are to be cleared from the encroached forest land. The state government has deployed more than 1,000 security personnel, along with heavy machinery such as excavators and bulldozers, to carry out the operation. While the forest authority claims that around 10,958 hectares have been encroached, many of the affected settlers—including members of the so-called 'Miya Muslim' community—remain in the area.
Assam Talks With Nagaland
The Assam government has initiated discussions with Nagaland to ensure coordination and prevent tensions ahead of the large-scale eviction drive in Uriamghat, a sensitive stretch along the Assam–Nagaland border in Golaghat district. The eviction, scheduled to begin on July 29, targets over 11,000 bighas of land within the Rengma Reserve Forest, allegedly encroached by settlers—many of whom are minority Muslim families suspected to be undocumented immigrants or migrants from within Assam and neighbouring states.
To avoid misunderstandings, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged Nagaland's cooperation and stressed that the operation will be carried out peacefully. In response to fears of a potential spillover of evicted persons, the Nagaland government issued an advisory on July 21 directing all deputy commissioners to maintain strict vigilance and prevent any illegal influx. Security measures have been stepped up across the border, including mobile checkpoints and ILP (Inner Line Permit) verifications.
Eviction Drive
A total of 10,959 bighas of land is to be cleared, for which more than 2,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed. Around 900 encroachers have already left the area, with about 1,400 trucks used for relocation. However, more than 1,000 encroachers are still occupying the forest land.
On July 25, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Rengma Reserve Forest in Uriamghat, Golaghat district. 'In Uriamghat, I personally reviewed the extent of encroachment of forest land and how the forest has been destroyed and converted into commercial plantations," CM Sarma stated in an X post.
Local MLA Biswajit Phukan expressed hope that the eviction drive would be completed peacefully. 'We have a strong CM, and under the leadership of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, the indigenous people of Assam will be safe in every corner of the state," stated the BJP MLA from Sarupathar constituency.

Himachal ministers' power bills total Rs 17.95 lakh in a year; govt saves Rs 59 lakh in subsidy surrender scheme
The Himachal Pradesh government has saved nearly Rs 59 lakh under the electricity surrender subsidy scheme till February 20 this year, according to data placed in the House on the second day of the ongoing Monsoon Session on Tuesday. The state has also incurred an expenditure of Rs 17,95,879 towards electricity bills for residences of cabinet ministers, including Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri and state dignitaries over the past year between January 1, 2024, and February 20, 2025. BJP's Sudhir Sharma, the MLA from Dharamshala, and Congress's Kewal Singh Pathania, the MLA from Shahpur, had sought the information. At Rs 6.78 lakh, the highest bill was for the official residence of Congress MLA from Nagrota, R S Bali, who is also chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) of cabinet rank. Sukhu's residence at Oak Over incurred a bill of Rs 3.76 lakh during the same period. As per the government statement, the state has benefited by about Rs 59 lakh under the Electricity Subsidy Surrender Scheme till February 20, 2025. The scheme has been operational since last year, providing relief to domestic consumers while ensuring efficient power distribution. On January 2 this year, CM Sukhu was the first person in the state to surrender the subsidy of 125 free units of electricity under his name. The information placed in the House by Sukhu further stated that, alongside subsidy implementation, Himachal Pradesh is aggressively expanding its smart metering network under central schemes like the Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) and Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). So far, a total of 6,52,955 smart meters have been installed across Shimla city, Dharamshala town, and other areas falling under these schemes. The state aims to complete full smart metering in certain areas by February 2026. For Mandi, Hamirpur, and Kangra towns, Letters of Intent (LOIs) have been issued for the installation of 5,05,078 smart meters specifically targeting system metering and priority consumers. Additionally, the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited has approved the installation of 14,78,945 smart consumer meters, which will cover major towns like Kangra, Mandi, and Hamirpur. The implementation of smart meters is expected to reduce power theft, improve billing accuracy, and enhance real-time monitoring for both domestic and commercial consumers.

‘Bulldozer has run amok': Siswan ‘hills flattened and over 500 trees' axed, BJP slams Punjab Govt
Hills spread over several acres in Punjab's Siswan village, adjoining New Chandigarh, are being illegally levelled and more than 500 trees have been cut, panchayat members and BJP leaders alleged on Tuesday, adding that despite repeated complaints, the forest, wildlife, panchayat departments and Punjab Police failed to act. Punjab BJP media head Vineet Joshi, who visited the site along with Sarpanch Sanjeev Sharma, panchayat members, BJP leaders Mohit Gautam, panch Amandeep Sharma, and lambardar Sher Khan, accused the Government of turning a blind eye to the environmental destruction. 'All pleas have fallen on deaf ears. The bulldozer has run amok while officials remain mute spectators,' Joshi said. Joshi highlighted that the land in question, falling under Khasra number 453, is notified under section 4 of the Punjab Land Preservation Act (PLPA) 1900. Under this Act, no farming, excavation, mining, tree cutting, or even cattle grazing is permitted. 'If the law clearly prohibits any activity, then how have these hills been flattened and hundreds of trees destroyed?' he asked. Joshi further said that the forest and wildlife protection department had already declared this region as the Siswan Community Reserve Forest. 'This means no activity can be allowed that harms flora, fauna, or the ecology. Yet everything prohibited has been carried out openly,' he added. Joshi demanded immediate registration of FIRs under the PLPA, the Wildlife Protection Act, the Forest Act, and criminal provisions for illegal trespass and encroachment on panchayat land. 'Those who have cut the hills and felled over 500 trees must face strict action. If authorities fail to act, the BJP will raise this issue at higher forums,' he said. Villagers echoed Joshi's concern, alleging that despite repeated representations, the administration has 'remained silent spectator', allowing large-scale environmental damage in Siswan.
