GDT reaffirms stricter regulations on delivery bike riders
Khaled Al Hameidi Doha Over the past few years, the streets of Doha and other Qatari cities have seen a sharp rise in motorcycles operated by delivery companies, driven largely by the boom in mobile applications that have reshaped consumption habits. These delivery bikes have become an integral part of urban life, offering speed and convenience in transporting meals and goods. However, they are also increasingly associated with noise, congestion, and safety risks. Reckless riding, frequent violations of traffic rules, and growing complaints from both motorists and pedestrians have turned the issue into a subject of public debate. Observers warn that the situation now calls for urgent intervention. They point to the need for stricter regulations, better enforcement, and possibly the introduction of dedicated lanes and parking spaces for motorcycles to strike a balance between the demand for fast delivery services and the imperative of public safety. The General Directorate of Traffic (GDT) has reaffirmed its commitment to tightening regulations on delivery motorbike riders, introducing a series of organisational and monitoring measures aimed at boosting road safety and minimizing risks associated with the fast-growing delivery sector. Responding to questions by Qatar Tribune, the directorate explained that since 2024, it has been enforcing a rule requiring delivery riders to remain in the right-hand lane of the road at all times, with exceptions allowed only at intersections, roundabouts, and junctions within a 300-metre range. Violations are detected through smart traffic surveillance systems as well as active road patrols. As part of its preventive measures, the directorate added, they held an extensive meeting with representatives of delivery companies operating in the country, during which officials highlighted the dangers of using non-compliant delivery boxes. page 15
