Emirates Development Bank launches $272mln Emirates Growth Fund to accelerate growth of UAE-based SMEs

Zawya20-05-2025

ABU DHABI: Emirates Development Bank (EDB) today announced the launch of the Emirates Growth Fund (EGF), a transformative AED 1 billion growth equity platform designed to accelerate the scale, resilience, and global competitiveness of UAE-based SMEs.
Officially unveiled at the fourth edition of Make it in the Emirates Forum, EGF delivers patient capital and deep strategic partnership to high-potential businesses across priority sectors: Manufacturing, Food Security, Healthcare, and Advanced Technology.
The fund plays a pivotal role in driving the UAE's industrial transformation and advancing the goals of Operation 300bn, the national strategy to raise the industrial sector's GDP contribution to AED 300 billion by 2031.
Emirates Growth Fund targets UAE-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with strong growth potential and annual revenues typically starting from AED 10 million. The Fund's investments range between AED 10 million and AED 50 million per company. EGF redefines growth capital for UAE SMEs, targeting companies that have outgrown early-stage funding but require flexible, long-term investment to unlock their full potential.
By combining minority equity stakes with active value creation, EGF empowers founders to scale sustainably, strengthen governance, and build national champions that will shape the UAE's economic future. The Fund is chaired by Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, UAE Minister of Sports, with Najla Ahmed Al Midfa serving as Vice Chair and Managing Director. The EGF Board also includes Ms. Mariam Saeed Ghobash, Mr. Mohammed Huraimel Al Shamsi, Khalfan Juma Belhoul, Mr. Hassan AlSayegh, and Mr. Stephen Welton.
Commenting on the launch, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Emirates Development Bank, stated: 'In line with the vision and directives of the UAE's leadership to enable a transformative leap in our national industrial sector, increase its contribution to GDP, and strengthen the UAE's position as a competitive and reliable destination for industrial and technological investment, Emirates Development Bank remains committed to advancing a future built on resilience and self-sufficiency.'
He added 'The launch of the Emirates Growth Fund is a bold, future-focused step that provides UAE-based growth-stage companies with the capital, expertise, and strategic support needed to scale and lead in the industrial sector. It supports the advancement of priority sectors, enhances industrial competitiveness, and strengthens supply chain resilience and national self-sufficiency. We are confident that this Fund will be a true enabler for ambitious companies—serving as a strategic investment in the UAE's long-term growth and prosperity, and reinforcing its position as a global leader in industrial innovation.'
Highlighting EGF's strategic focus, Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Chairman of the Emirates Growth Fund and UAE Minister of Sports, added:
'EGF is designed to address the critical 'missing middle' in SME funding. These are companies that are too advanced for venture capital, too entrepreneurial for traditional private equity, but too important to ignore. Our goal is to partner with scalable businesses that drive industrial capacity, create jobs, and deliver lasting economic value. Through patient capital and active support, we are strengthening the foundation of the UAE's next economic era.'
Reflecting on EGF's commitment to founder-led growth and national impact, Najla Ahmed Al Midfa, Vice Chair and Managing Director, noted: 'At EGF, our capital is patient, but our ambitions are not. We are here to back UAE founders who are building resilient, future-ready businesses. Through EGF, we are not just writing cheques, we are building in the next generation of UAE economic champions.'
EGF targets UAE-headquartered SMEs with strong growth potential, typically generating AED 10 million or more in annual revenue, and invests between AED 10 and 50 million per company. The fund's approach centres on active minority investments, ensuring that founders retain operational control while gaining strategic support in areas such as governance, growth strategy, operational optimization, and institutionalization.
By focusing on priority sectors aligned with the UAE's strategic goals, EGF is set to deepen the nation's industrial base, enhance local supply chains, and stimulate high-skilled job creation, all critical pillars of long-term economic resilience.
Signalling immediate momentum, EGF unveiled its first investment in the healthcare sector through a partnership with Tarmeem Healthcare Holding LTD, marking the start of a portfolio aimed at delivering measurable impact and national value.

SME story: How Junior Couture aims to elevate luxury kidswear in the Gulf

Images: Supplied With roots in regional insight and a flair for global fashion, Annelouise and Dominic Speakman launched Today, the brand has carved a niche for itself by offering a curated, omnichannel experience that merges global luxury with local sensibilities. In this interview, the husband-and-wife duo share how they're scaling their business, staying competitive, and driving sustainability in one of the fastest-growing fashion segments in the region. What inspired you to start your brand? Junior Couture was born out of a simple yet powerful idea: to make luxury children's fashion more accessible, curated, and relevant to the lifestyle and tastes of families in the Gulf region. We noticed a gap in the market – while high-end fashion was flourishing for adults, the children's segment lacked the same level of choice, service, and regional understanding. Our passion for fashion, combined with a deep appreciation for family values and cultural preferences, inspired us to create a premium destination that brings the best of global kidswear to our doorstep. Luxury fashion for kids is highly competitive in the Gulf. How do you differentiate yourself from established global players? We differentiate ourselves through a highly curated, customer-centric approach. Unlike general luxury retailers, we specialise exclusively in children's fashion, which allows us to offer a deeper and more diverse collection tailored to every stage of a child's development – from infants to teens. We also blend global style with regional sensitivity, understanding the needs of modesty, climate, and local cultural events. Our omnichannel presence, exceptional customer service, and partnerships with both iconic brands and emerging designers create a boutique experience at scale – something larger global players often struggle to replicate locally. Annelouise and Dominic Speakman What are your short- and mid-term revenue goals for this market? In the short term, we're focused on strengthening our online and in-store presence across the GCC, with a target of 20–25 per cent year-on-year revenue growth. For the mid-term (three–five years), we aim to double our revenue by expanding our footprint into retail space, enhancing our private label offerings, and investing in AI-driven personalisation for e-commerce. We're also exploring partnerships and exclusive brand drops that drive both sales and customer loyalty. What role do you think kids' fashion should play in shaping a more sustainable future? Children's fashion must lead the way in redefining conscious consumption. Kids grow fast – so there's an urgent need to rethink waste, durability, and seasonality. At Junior Couture, we're championing quality over quantity, promoting brands with ethical production standards. Educating both parents and children on sustainability is part of our mission, because shaping the future starts with the next generation. What is the anticipated growth for high-end luxury kids fashion in the UAE and the region? The high-end kidswear market in the UAE and wider GCC is projected to grow steadily at around 7–10 per cent annually, fuelled by rising disposable incomes, fashion-conscious millennial parents, and a strong gifting culture. The region's appetite for premium and luxury goods, including for children, remains resilient – even amid global uncertainties. With international brands expanding their kids' lines and digital retail evolving, the segment is set to become a significant contributor to the overall luxury market in the region. What's next for the company? We're looking ahead with ambition and purpose. In the next phase, we're focusing on regional expansion, enhanced personalisation through tech, and deeper brand collaborations – especially with designers looking to enter the Middle Eastern market through children's fashion. We're also launching experiential in-store concepts and lifestyle extensions that go beyond clothing – bringing the Junior Couture world into toys, interiors, and even family events. Our ultimate goal is to become the region's leading authority and lifestyle platform for luxury children's fashion.

Stitch Raises $10M to Improve Financial Infrastructure in MENA

Stitch, a Saudi Arabia-based platform for launching and scaling financial products, has announced the close of a US$10 million seed funding round. The round was led by Arbor Ventures, COTU Ventures, Raed Ventures, and SVC, with participation from family offices and industry figures including Marqeta founder Jason Gardner and Abdulmalik AlSheikh, known for his role in establishing the mada and Sadad payment networks in Saudi Arabia. The funding will support Stitch's efforts to expand its team and enhance its technology platform, which aims to simplify the development and launch of financial services. Demand for integrated financial infrastructure is increasing across both the Middle East and global markets. The global banking and financial services industry is projected to grow from US$91.42 billion in 2024 to US$221.39 billion by 2033, at a compound annual growth rate of 10.3 percent. In Saudi Arabia, banking sector assets have reached US$1.12 trillion (SAR 4.22 trillion), while digital payments grew by 75 percent between 2019 and 2021. Point-of-sale transactions in the country totalled US$177.69 billion (SAR 667 billion) in the 2024 financial year. Despite this growth, many businesses in the region continue to face challenges in building financial products due to outdated systems and complex regulations. Stitch aims to address this with a unified, API-driven platform. Currently serving clients in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the company has also expanded into East Africa, beginning with Kenya. Mohamed Oueida, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Stitch, said: 'Businesses are forced to navigate outdated legacy systems and complex regulatory frameworks, making things slow, expensive, and mostly painful. It does not have to be this way. Stitch exists to change this. Institutions should be able to focus on what matters and have a platform that can mould around their creativity. We are generally looking to make this process a lot more enjoyable for our partners.' Stitch's platform enables clients to develop and launch financial services more efficiently, with the company claiming product deployment times can be reduced by up to 80 percent. Clients include Lulu Exchange, Alamoudi Exchange, Foodics, Dar Al Tamleek, Raya Financing, and Tanmeya Capital, all of whom are using the platform to offer customised financial solutions. Founded in 2022, Stitch has brought together talent from institutions such as FIS, Geidea, Rain Financial, NPCI India, and Al Rajhi Bank, with a focus on long-term innovation in banking and payments.
