Campco seeks compensation from CM as fruit rot disease damages arecanut crop

Mangaluru: The arecanut crop was already partially destroyed due to continuous and excessive rainfall, and if the present weather conditions persist, further crop loss is inevitable.
In light of this grave situation, Campco president A Kishore Kumar Kodgi submitted a formal request to chief minister Siddaramaiah, urging the govt to conduct a crop damage survey and provide compensation to the affected farmers.
The arecanut-growing districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru witnessed monsoon rainfall well above the seasonal average. Despite farmers spraying fungicides multiple times, the persistent rain triggered a widespread outbreak of fruit rot disease (Kole Roga), destroying nearly half of the arecanut crop.
Farmers are making desperate efforts to save the remaining yield, but the results have been largely ineffective.
Disheartened by mounting losses, they are now looking to the govt for support.
Campco urged the CM to take urgent steps by initiating a scientific survey through the concerned departments to assess crop damage, providing timely compensation for the economic loss incurred by the farmers, and issuing necessary relief measures to safeguard the livelihoods of growers during this critical period.
Kodgi, in a release, expressed hope that the govt would act swiftly to mitigate the impact of this natural calamity.

Kapila in spate, mantap partially submerged

Following heavy discharge of water from Kabini dam due to incessant rains in its catchment areas, Kapila river is in spate, and the surroundings of the river bank in Nanjangud have been flooded. The famous 16-pillared mantap (Hadinaru Kalu Mantap) at Snana Ghatta in the river has been partially submerged, and the river water is inching closer to the steps of Mudi Katte near the famous Srikanteshwaraswamy temple in the temple town. Over 40,000 cusecs of water was discharged from the dam. As a precautionary measure, police have put barricades to prevent people from going near the swollen river, and the bathing ghat. The Kabini dam level stood at 2,281.97 ft, as against the maximum of 2,284 ft. The inflow was 31,600 cusecs on Monday at 8 a.m. Flood warning was issued for the safety of the people living on the river banks. A few days ago, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had offered 'bagina' to the Kabini dam.
