Warisan calls for White Paper, audit on Sabah GLCs
Warisan secretary-general Datuk Loretto Padua Jr the White Paper would allow concerned Sabahans to know what led to the underperformance and what the state government plans to do about it.
He added that transparency is needed, saying: "The best watchdogs in this state are the people of Sabah themselves, not those appointed by the Chief Minister from the ruling party or coalition."
"Prudent spending must be emphasised and all unnecessary overseas trips must be stopped immediately," he said in a statement on Monday (May 26) adding that if Warisan was given the mandate to govern, they would table a White Paper in the State Assembly within six months.
He said the White Paper would address matters such as the RM5bil in non-performing loans at Sabah Development Bank and its use of "creative accounting"; the cancellation of Sabah Forest Industries concession land and its reallocation to peninsula-based companies; the water and electricity supply crises including exorbitant charges by private tanker contractors; and the RM1.2bil bailout of Sabah International Petroleum via a RM900mil Sukuk Wakalah issuance by SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd.
It would also cover unresolved GLC-related issues previously raised by Warisan and other Opposition parties, which Loretto said were never addressed by GRS-Pakatan Harapan in the state assembly.
He also said Warisan would also push for detailed investigations by the National Audit Committee into all problematic state agencies and GLCs.
"I believe that a Cabinet White Paper and National Audit Committee investigations are the first steps towards improving the performance of GLCs and state agencies," he said.

Sabah and Sarawak development focus in 13MP parliamentary debate
KUALA LUMPUR: A proposal for federal and Sabah collaboration in developing the blue economy sector was raised in Parliament today. Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan (GRS-Keningau) emphasised Sabah's potential in fisheries, agriculture, and livestock during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) debate. 'It needs to be implemented using a new approach that covers the entire industrial chain, rather than through standalone projects,' he said. Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Warisan-Semporna) urged the government to prioritise Sabah's development projects for tangible public benefits. He stressed the need to address water supply and school infrastructure to ensure balanced progress across states. Mohamad Shafizan Kepli (GPS-Batang Lupar) called for urgent upgrades to rural schools facing classroom shortages. 'Rural education needs to be strengthened through preschool facilities, early exposure to artificial intelligence technology, and interactive digital equipment to ensure children have equal learning opportunities,' he said. He also proposed a dedicated sports school in Sarawak to nurture young athletes like divers Datuk Pandelela Rinong and Bryan Nickson Lomas. Roy Angau Ginkoi (GPS-Lubuk Antu) suggested developing Lubuk Antu as an inland port due to its strategic location near Kalimantan. The parliamentary session will resume tomorrow. - Bernama

MR D.I.Y. posts higher 2Q profit, declares RM142.1mil dividend
KUALA LUMPUR: MR D.I.Y. Group (M) Bhd will continue to expand its retail footprint by strategically launching new stores across its core and sub-brands in 2025. 'These efforts aim to reinforce the group's market leadership and its position as the value retailer of choice for all Malaysians,' the home improvement retailer said in the notes accompanying its financial results. MR D.I.Y. sees no material impact on its business operations despite market volatility from geopolitical tensions, tariff changes, and domestic policy shifts, including the revised Sales and Service Tax in July 2025 and the 2% EPF contribution for foreign workers. In the second quarter ended June 30 (2Q25), MR D.I.Y.'s net profit rose 2.2% to RM158.6mil, or 1.67 sen per share, lifting first-half (1H25) net profit 10.9% to RM332.7mil, or 3.51 sen per share. Quarterly revenue rose 1.5% to RM1.2bil, lifting first-half revenue 5.6% to RM2.47bil from RM2.3bil in 1H24. The group opened 31 net new stores during the quarter, bringing the total to 1,502 as at 1H25 - an increase of 12.1% year-on-year (y-o-y). Total transactions rose 5.0% y-o-y to 48.5 million, partially offset by a 3.3% decline in average basket size, mainly due to fewer items per transaction. MR D.I.Y said it remained focused on delivering long-term, sustainable value to stakeholders through strategic investments in growth and technology to enhance operational efficiency, while maintaining a consistent dividend policy. For 2Q25, the group declared an interim single-tier dividend of RM0.015 per ordinary share, amounting to about RM142.1mil, representing an 89.6% payout ratio. The dividend will be paid on Sept 8 to shareholders on the Record of Depositors as at Aug 29.

‘Kinabalu Move' the ultimate betrayal of Sabahans, says Kunak assemblyman
Kunak assemblyman Norazlinah Arif says Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor is a fair and more accessible leader who does not place reliance on rhetoric. KOTA KINABALU : The infamous Kinabalu Move, aimed at ousting Hajiji Noor as Sabah chief minister, was the ultimate betrayal of Sabahans, according to Kunak assemblyman Norazlinah Arif. Norazlinah was with Warisan in 2023 when the party, led by president Shafie Apdal, plotted with Sabah Umno to replace the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government. The two-term assemblyman said Warisan members were hoping the memorandum of understanding — struck between the party, GRS, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan on Dec 16, 2022 — would benefit the people. The intention was to back the newly established unity government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, she added. 'Our hope at the time was that the leaders of the respective parties and coalitions would unite to prioritise the rakyat above their personal interests or that of the party. 'Unfortunately, the opposite happened,' she told FMT, referring to the failed 'coup' led by Sabah Umno. In January 2023, Bung Moktar Radin, the Sabah Umno chief, announced that the party was withdrawing its support for Hajiji. However, six Umno assemblymen pledged continued support for Hajiji, foiling Bung's plans which had the backing of Warisan and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat. Pakatan Harapan and GRS assemblymen also pledged their undivided support for Hajiji, who assumed the top post in September 2020 following a state election. Bung was subsequently dropped as the state's deputy chief minister. Last month, Norazlinah claimed there was nothing altruistic about the Kinabalu Move. She said she and several others were informed that four or five Warisan leaders would be named to the state Cabinet if they backed the Bung-led coup. Following its failure, Norazlinah and several other Warisan assemblymen threw their support behind Hajiji. Norazlinah is grateful the attempted coup failed due to a lack of support for Warisan president Shafie Apdal as the next chief minister. 'Many assemblymen, mainly from BN and PH, were also in favour of retaining the current administration (under Hajiji). 'For me, that was a sign that we were betrayed by a party that was supposedly championing the people's rights.' Hajiji has treated us well The Kinabalu Move was the straw that broke the camel's back for Norazlinah. On Feb 6, 2023, she left Warisan, a party she had been with since its founding in 2016. She expressed no regrets for her decision, especially after aligning with Hajiji, whom she praised for addressing the people's issues through action rather than rhetoric. 'Hajiji treats all assemblymen fairly, myself included, despite the fact that I only recently joined GRS,' she said, adding that the chief minister was also more accessible. According to Norazalinah, there is talk of Warisan joining forces with BN for the upcoming state election, despite Shafie previously stating that the party intends to contest all 73 seats on its own. She said such talk contradicted Warisan's previous stance on an alliance with BN. 'When we first joined the party, we were indoctrinated to think that our mission was to topple BN. 'Their (Warisan's) ego is forcing them to forgo that very principle — all because they are power hungry.'
