Sabah and Sarawak development focus in 13MP parliamentary debate
Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan (GRS-Keningau) emphasised Sabah's potential in fisheries, agriculture, and livestock during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) debate.
'It needs to be implemented using a new approach that covers the entire industrial chain, rather than through standalone projects,' he said.
Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Warisan-Semporna) urged the government to prioritise Sabah's development projects for tangible public benefits.
He stressed the need to address water supply and school infrastructure to ensure balanced progress across states.
Mohamad Shafizan Kepli (GPS-Batang Lupar) called for urgent upgrades to rural schools facing classroom shortages.
'Rural education needs to be strengthened through preschool facilities, early exposure to artificial intelligence technology, and interactive digital equipment to ensure children have equal learning opportunities,' he said.
He also proposed a dedicated sports school in Sarawak to nurture young athletes like divers Datuk Pandelela Rinong and Bryan Nickson Lomas.
Roy Angau Ginkoi (GPS-Lubuk Antu) suggested developing Lubuk Antu as an inland port due to its strategic location near Kalimantan.

Section 353 provides for a jail term of up to two years or a fine, while Section 427 provides for a jail term of not less than a year and not more than five years, a fine, or both, upon conviction. In a statement, Fadil referenced a video on TikTok which saw participants of a gathering 'provoking and forcefully breaching' police officers who were on duty during the event at Jalan Parlimen. He said police respected the public's right to express opinions and to assemble peacefully, and were committed to playing their role as a facilitator at such events. '(But) these rights should be exercised responsibly and prudently,' he said. 'Firm action will be taken against individuals or groups who instigate chaos or engage in excessive provocation.' Earlier today, FMT reported that more than 100 plantation workers from Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kedah and Johor marched from Taman Tugu in the capital to Parliament to submit a memorandum on housing and a draft bill making it compulsory for estates to provide homes for local plantation workers. Police blocked the group from gathering at Parliament's gates but later allowed the workers to hand over the documents to deputy law and institutional reform minister M Kulasegaran and opposition chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan.

Policeman injured as group attempts to hand over memorandum
KUALA LUMPUR: A policeman has been injured as a political party attempted to hand over a memorandum to lawmakers in the Parliament building here. In a statement on Wednesday (Aug 13), Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said a video of the incident showed a clash between participants and policemen on Jalan Parlimen. "A policeman suffered injuries and was sent for treatment. An investigation paper has been opened under Section 353/427 of the Penal Code," he said. He added that police remain committed to facilitating the right of the public to assemble publicly but that right must be practiced with care and prudence. "Strict action will be taken on individuals or groups that cause extreme provocation or disturbance," he said.
