73 Years Ago, This Puri-Sabzi Stall Sold Its First Plate For 15 Paise. Today, It Costs...
Agarwal Puri Bhandar in Bhopal has served iconic puri-sabzi for 73 years, keeping a family legacy alive with timeless flavours and home-ground spices You may have enjoyed puri-sabzi at countless places, but there's something truly special about the flavours at Agarwal Puri Bhandar, nestled in Chowk Bazaar, in the heart of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This iconic eatery has been serving up its legendary puri and potato curry for over 73 years. With a taste reminiscent of the classic Bhandare -style meal, it continues to draw visitors from far and wide. A Legacy Of Flavour In conversation with Local 18, Pradeep Agarwal, the current proprietor, shared the story behind the enduring success of this humble establishment. His father, the late Shri Ram Agarwal, founded the shop in 1952, renting a small 10-by-12-foot space. Back then, Bhopal was a quieter, smaller city. The nearby Jumerati Gate would close by 7 pm, prompting customers to arrive early for their evening meals. It didn't take long for the delicious, homestyle puri-sabzi to capture hearts and create a loyal following. A Culinary Journey Through The Decades From just 15 paise for a plate in the 1950s to Rs 60 today, the journey of Agarwal Puri Bhandar reflects both tradition and timeless appeal. In its early days, five puris and a generous serving of potato curry were available for just 10 to 15 annas. Long-standing patrons fondly recall Ram Agarwal himself cooking and serving the meals. The menu has since grown to include raita, pickle, papad, gulab jamun, and dahi bade, all paired perfectly with freshly made puris. The shop has maintained its essence while keeping up with evolving tastes. Now run by the third generation, Pradeep Agarwal proudly continues his father's legacy. Regulars still park their vehicles outside Chowk Bazaar and walk in for a plate of their favourite dish. The family grinds its own spices in-house, preserving the signature taste that has stood the test of time. His sons, Ayush and Aman Agarwal, have also joined the family business, ensuring the tradition continues. The family has even expanded, opening a new outlet, Rajbhog, in MP Nagar, bringing their beloved flavours to another part of the city. First Published: July 01, 2025, 09:41 IST

48 high-end ‘model liquor shops' soon in Raj cities
Jaipur: Tipplers in the state will soon stroll into posh, air-conditioned showrooms to purchase their favourite premium brands. The excise department is launching 48 'model liquor shops' across major cities, strategically located in malls, shopping complexes, and other high-footfall areas. Jaipur is set to receive five such outlets, while Jodhpur and Udaipur will get two each. Mount Abu and Abu Road—treated as distinct zones due to their proximity to Gujarat, a dry state, will have one outlet each. The remaining 37 shops will be auctioned across various cities. An official said, "The minimum reserve price for model shops in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Mount Abu, and Abu Road has been fixed at Rs 1 crore per outlet. For other locations, the base price is Rs 50 lakh. The online auction is scheduled for July 7, with a non-refundable participation fee of Rs 50,000 per shop. Bidders may not raise their bids by more than 10% over the base price in a single attempt." To qualify, a minimum space of 1,000 sq ft is required in Jaipur, while 500 sq ft suffices in other cities. Each outlet must be fully air-conditioned and offer a walk-in experience. For enhanced transparency and customer convenience, POS billing systems and hologram-scanning beep machines will be mandatory. Only premium alcoholic beverages will be available for sale—beer priced above Rs 200 per 650 ml and Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) brands costing Rs 1,500 or more per 750 ml bottle. The initiative is part of the state's 2025–2029 excise and liquor regulation policy. An official explained, "This concept is already in place in several metropolitan areas, including Gurugram. Many premium brands have so far hesitated to launch in Rajasthan due to concerns over inadequate shelf display. As a result, customers often travel to other states to purchase premium liquor. This initiative aims to bridge that gap." Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!

Ahead of state polls, cabinet approves Rs 1 lakh crore scheme aimed at creating 3.5 crore jobs
NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Tuesday approved the Rs 1-lakh crore Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme, aimed at generating more than 3.5 crore jobs in the organised sector. Announced in July 2024, the scheme is meant to counter criticism over inadequate jobs being created in the economy at a time when there is a rising number of job seekers in the market. The decision comes ahead of assembly elections in Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. I&B minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the scheme was finalised after detailed deliberation with industry leaders and other stakeholders. The scheme has two elements, one targeted at first-time employees who earn up to Rs 1 lakh a month and are members of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation. The Centre will pay up to Rs 15,000 each to around 1.9 crore employees. Govt hopes these jobs will be created by Aug 2027. ELI to aid newcomers in electronics, auto & semiconductor space The Rs 15,000 payment to first-time employees will be split into two instalments, with the second payment to be made after 12 months directly into their bank accounts. The second part is targeted at encouraging manufacturing companies to hire more. Govt will offer up to Rs 3,000 a month for two years for each additional employee who stays on for six months or more. For the manufacturing sector, the incentives will be extended to the third and fourth year as well. "Establishments which are registered with the EPFO will be required to hire at least two additional employees (for employers with less than 50 employees) or five additional employees (for employers with 50 or more employees) on a sustained basis for at least six months," an official statement said. The scheme may benefit several of the new entrants coming up with new facilities, especially in electronics, semiconductors and the automobiles space. "ELI is a significant step towards boosting employment and formalising India's workforce. ELI scheme opens doors for first-time job seekers, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to India's growth story. It empowers employers to expand their workforce and gives a decisive push to India's labour-intensive sectors," said CII director general Chandrajit Banerjee.
