Extreme day tripping is popular with many tourists, thanks to the low costs and thrill the adventures offer. The trend, which sees travel lovers visit a destination for 24 hours or less, is increasingly popular.
As the travel experts at Iglu Cruise explain: "Extreme Day Tripping simply means going to another country and returning home within one day. Often, people will catch an early morning flight and return home in the evening, meaning they'll have less than 24 hours to explore a city or destination.
"The term has gathered popularity over the last few months, with many travellers acknowledging the benefits of such a trip. Using less annual leave is one of the main benefits, especially for those who struggle to take time away from work. Some people also argue that it can be cheaper than a night out in the UK, as you're not spending money on accommodation."
In other words, the viral craze helps visitors enjoy locations for less. As the experts mentioned, there's no need to pay for a hotel, and many opt for last-minute travel deals - going wherever they can for the lowest price.
However, if you're looking for inspiration before booking a destination, the travel experts have some recommendations and ideas for what you can do when you arrive. Here are five European city breaks that could be ideal for extreme day trips from the UK. While Iglu Cruise's experts calculated the average flight times based on one-way flights from London airports, you can expect similar times for direct flights from most UK cities.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Average flight time: 1 hour 10 minutes
The Iglu Cruise experts said: "Amsterdam is a city full of charm, culture, and history. Start your day at Dam Square, in the heart of the city. Here you'll find historical buildings like the Royal Palace and the National Monument. It's a great starting point to get a feel for the city's atmosphere. Just a short walk from Dam Square, you'll find the Anne Frank House, where Anne Frank and her family hid during World War II.
"Make sure to book ahead before your trip, as queues can be long. From here, you can head to the Rijksmuseum, one of the world's greatest art museums. It houses masterpieces by Dutch painters like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh, including the famous Night Watch and The Milkmaid. It's a must-see for art lovers."
Sharing recommendations for the evening, they added: "Of course, Amsterdam is famous for its canals. Take a walk along the Grachtengordel (Canal Belt) or, if you have time, hop on a canal cruise to get a unique perspective of the city. End your day in a local cafe. Amsterdam is known for its cosy cafes and coffee shops. Enjoy a hot drink or an evening cocktail at a local cafe, especially in areas like the Nine Streets."
Dublin, Ireland

"Start your day at Trinity College, Dublin's oldest university. Visit the Old Library, home to the famous Book of Kells, a beautifully illustrated manuscript that's a must-see for history fans and art lovers. You'll also find plenty of breakfast spots in the area to enjoy a tasty bite to eat, including The Woollen Mills, located on Ormond Quay, and Bewley's Café on Grafton Street," advised the experts.
"From Trinity College, you can walk to Dublin Castle, which has played a central role in Ireland's history. Here you can explore both the State Apartments and the Medieval Undercroft. From there, you can walk to St. Patrick's Cathedral, the largest cathedral in Ireland. It's an architectural masterpiece and offers fascinating exhibits about Ireland's patron saint."
They concluded: "No trip to Dublin is complete without visiting the Guinness Storehouse, where you'll learn all about the brewing process and the history of Ireland's most famous beer. Then, you can head towards the Temple Bar area, known for its vibrant nightlife, packed with pubs, restaurants, and galleries. And of course, here you'll find the iconic Temple Bar Pub."

The pros at Iglu Cruise said: "There is plenty to see with only one day in Paris. Begin your day early with a trip to the Eiffel Tower, the most iconic landmark in the city. Then, cross the Seine River to Trocadéro Gardens, which offers one of the best views of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
"Enjoy a scenic walk to the Louvre Museum. You'll be able to see some of the world's most famous masterpieces, including the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. If you're short on time, just enjoy the Pyramide du Louvre from the outside. After the Louvre, take a short walk across the Pont des Arts bridge to the Île de la Cité. Visit the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral, an iconic landmark in the city, which re-opened to the public in late 2024.

Iglu Crusie's experts said: "Begin your day early by visiting La Sagrada Familia, the world-famous basilica designed by Antoni Gaudí. It's best to get there early to avoid crowds, and if possible, book tickets in advance to skip the line. The interior is breathtaking with its intricate design and stained-glass windows, and the exterior is equally spectacular."
They added: "In the afternoon, take a metro or taxi to Park Güell, another of Gaudí's famous creations. This public park is filled with whimsical sculptures, colourful mosaics, and panoramic views of the city. It's a great place for a leisurely walk while taking in some of the best views of Barcelona.
"In the evening, explore the El Raval or El Born neighbourhoods, both of which have a wide variety of tapas bars, traditional Catalan cuisine, and trendy restaurants, some of which may host a live flamenco show."

But the real star is that stunning sea view waiting to greet you each morning while you sip coffee on the balcony. Bliss. Days can be split between lazing by one of the two pools or venturing along the beach on the wooden walkways to golden sand. An early morning flight means that, after some speedy unpacking, we're lucky enough to steal a whole afternoon on the beach. Within minutes, we're running like giddy kids straight into the crystal-clear water. It doesn't take long to slip into the laid-back beach vibe, with mellow Ibizan bossa nova tunes floating through the air like a warm breeze. Best beaches in the world revealed At the hotel, bicycles are yours for the taking, free of charge, and with the island stretching only 12 miles from end to end, it's a great way to get around. Every beach and landmark is within easy reach, the roads are wide and safe, and drivers are courteous of tourists and locals alike. My husband, however, feels the need for something a touch more continental. So we swap pedals for petrol and hire a scooter to get around for the week. No trip to Formentera would be complete without visiting Ses Illetes beach Soon we're zipping about in style, the nostalgic smell and happy hum of the two-stroke engine a defining summer soundtrack of countless European holidays past. Four miles up the coast, or 15 minutes by scooter, Cala Saona is one of Formentera's must-visit beaches. Nicknamed 'the jewel of the west coast of Formentera', it's tucked away in a beautiful cove, with shallow, inviting waters. Flanked by cliffs, it's also a sheltered spot, shielded from the stronger winds that often impact southern shorelines. Located on the island's northernmost tip, this narrow strip of rock is fringed by powdery-white sand and turquoise sea. At its very end, you'll be rewarded with views of S'Espalmador, an islet within Formentera's Ses Salines Nature Park, part of a Unesco World Heritage site. This islet made headlines last year when Katy Perry filmed her Lifetimes music video there without permission from the Spanish authorities. Refreshingly untouched Sadly, no celebs are spotted this time, although Kate Moss has recently been galavanting on the beaches of Formentera, clutching a Birkin bag, no less. And, judging by the influx of superyachts moored in the bay during our visit, the stars must be close. Last year, my plan to reach the very tip of the island failed — so naturally, it's at the top of this year's must-do list. Armed with sandwiches and more water than seemed reasonable for the two-mile round trip, we set off. The sandbar is shallow and warm, perfect for wading far out while still being only knee-deep. That's one bucket-list item officially ticked. Back at the hotel, there is a range of activities to keep guests happy throughout the day, including yoga, massage, water polo and an energetic kids' club. Formentera is often hailed as the last truly authentic Balearic island Evenings offer diverse entertainment options, with buffet-style dinners that have enough variety to satisfy all tastebuds. Meanwhile, the hotel's South Beach bar provides a casual atmosphere, with day beds and sunken seats perfect for relaxing. Our evenings are happily spent here — cocktails and chilled-out music making it the perfect end to another sun-soaked day. With a week in Formentera feeling like two, it's easy to see why people come back here year on year. No doubt we'll be returning for another run of hippie adventure. Formentera is often hailed as the last truly authentic Balearic island — a little slice of paradise where time slows down, flip-flops are practically a dress code and the charm feels refreshingly untouched. Here is everything you need to know. Just steps from London Victoria station, you are right in the middle of it all. The July London Victoria is a mastery in transporting you back in time without feeling dated, with laidback funk and jazz playing while checking into the mid century hotel. I was obsessed with the interiors as soon as I stepped in - rich mid century wood, painted ceilings and plush red chairs, all while funk and jazz played overhead. What are the rooms like? Despite calling themselves aparthotel, it felt more likely being in a trendy A listers flat. Each room comes with their own kitchenette, complete with Nespresso machines, tea making and all the glassware above the cooker. Decorated in baby pinks and rich green, I had great fun calling reception on the retro yellow dialling phone. Along with my very plush double bed, the pink tiled bathroom comes with a walk in shower and Marie-Stella-Maris toiletries, a Dutch brand the hotel has teamed up with. Despite being by a busy train station, my room was gloriously quiet thanks to overlooking a quiet street behind - meaning a fantastic nights sleep. What can you eat and drink there? The hotels The Idler is where you can dine all day. Lined with rich red leather seats, green ceiling ans pink trikes bar, I felt like I'd gone back to the80s (in a modern way) thanks to the abstract painted ceiling and mix of artwork on the walls Dinner is a small choice but good size portions affair; My Coppa cured meat and pickles starter was just as good as the whipped butter and sourdough. As tempted as I was by the steak and fish, the fresh tomato linguine with sides of seaweed salty Cavelero Nero and broccoli were a divine choice, as well as offering extremely large portion sizes. And I could hardly resist the chocolate mousse… Breakfast is a choice of continental or hot options such as potato hash and poached eggs. Take the kids too as they dine for free with an adult. Need a late night snack? There is even an on-site deli serving drinks and food to take back to your room. What else is there to do at the hotel? The hotel has an onsite 24hr gym - stylishly decorated in red patterns, albeit slightly sparse on the machines - as well as a cold plunge and sauna. The 24 hour reception is on hand for any questions or help - they happily were on hand when I forgot my phone charger by accident. Otherwise if you want to explore, catch a show at The West End, or hop on a train to explore the rest of the city. Is The July London Victoria family friendly? The hotel has a Family Apartment room which sleeps four, and you can request a free baby bed. Are there accessible rooms?
