Two charged with murder after deadly wedding shooting in southern France, bride killed and groom wounded

Malay Mail27-06-2025
MARSEILLE, June 27 — Two men have been charged with murder as part of a criminal gang after a 27-year-old bride was shot dead at a wedding party in southeastern France, prosecutors said.
Gunmen opened fire last Sunday at a wedding celebration in Goult, a hilltop village overlooking lavender fields, in what sources said might have been drug-related score settling.
Four masked men shot at several guests, including the newlyweds and the bride's 13-year-old nephew, in a car park outside the village hall, Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said late Thursday.
'The assailants opened fire, fatally wounding the bride, who was hit several times near the carotid artery,' Bessone said.
'The shots also hit the groom, who had several wounds in the upper body,' he said, adding that the boy had a lung injury and was initially in critical condition.
The groom's sister was also hit in the shoulder.
One of the attackers was killed. He was 'shot in the back and head' and also 'hit by a vehicle during the attack,' said the prosecutor.
His three accomplices fled on foot. Two of them were detained in a nearby town several hours later and the fourth is on the run.
After 96 hours in police custody, the two suspects appeared before a magistrate on Thursday and charged with murder and attempted murder as part of an organised gang. They have been remanded in custody.
The Marseille public prosecutor did not specify their motives. But a source close to the case said the 25-year-old groom was known to police for drug and organised crime offences.
The violence might be linked to possible drug-related score-settling, said another source. — AFP

Man gets 19 years in jail and four strokes of the rotan for raping 15-year-old girl in Kuching

KUCHING, Aug 20 — The Sessions Court here today sentenced a 47-year-old man from Tebedu to a total of 19 years in jail and four strokes of the rotan for two counts of rape involving a 15-year-old girl. Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi meted out the sentence against Effendy Atek after he pleaded guilty to the charges framed under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code. For the first charge, he was sentenced to nine years' jail with two strokes of the cane, while under the second charge, he was sentenced to 10 years behind bars and two strokes of the rotan. Saiful also ordered for the jail sentences to run concurrently from August 19, 2025. Effendy committed the offence at a house and on the staircase of a stadium in Tebedu on February 4 and 5, 2025. According to the facts of the case, the victim's father reported that his daughter had gone missing from home and did not return until several days later. On February 9, he informed police that his daughter had returned home safely and was taken for a medical check-up at Serian Hospital. On the same day, police from the Serian Criminal Investigation Department arrested Effendy. The investigation revealed that on February 3, Effendy texted the victim to meet him at a bus stop at midnight, after which they went to his house. At the house, Effendy raped the victim at around 3am. The second incident happened at a staircase at a stadium at 10pm where Effendy and the victim were sheltering from the rain. Deputy public prosecutor Ruvinasini Pandian handled the prosecution while Effendy was unrepresented by legal counsel. — The Borneo Post

France investigates death of livestreamer ‘Jean Pormanove' during on-air abuse

NICE, Aug 20 — Prosecutors in the south of France said yesterday they are investigating the death of a 46-year-old man who died during a live streaming event showing him being maltreated by two onscreen partners. The man—real name Raphael Graven, but known online as 'Jean Pormanove' or 'JP'—had built a following by putting on live internet shows in which he was abused or humiliated. Prosecutors in the city of Nice said he died Monday in the nearby village of Contes. Internet users said that the video—screened live on an Australian platform called Kick but widely shared afterwards—showed Graven lying immobile under a bed cover as one of two men in the room with him threw a plastic water bottle in his direction. The Nice prosecutors' office said it had launched an investigation to determine the cause of death, and had ordered an autopsy. Police in Nice have already for the past eight months been probing alleged 'deliberate violent act' against 'vulnerable people' that have been ending up as videos on the internet. That investigation, started in December, sprang from a report by French outlet Mediapart revealing the existence of such videos, followed by thousands of viewers, especially on the Kick platform. Asked about that investigation, Kick declined to provide any information, citing its policy of confidentiality. The platform is seen as having less stringent user terms than those of its rival, the better-known Twitch streaming service. — AFP

Florida executes man convicted of 1982 murder, 29th US execution this year

MIAMI, Aug 20 — A 67-year-old man convicted of the 1982 murder of a woman he abducted from her office was put to death by lethal injection in the southern US state of Florida on yesterday. Kayle Bates was sentenced to death in 1983 for the murder of Janet Renee White, 24, who worked at an insurance company in Lynn Haven, Florida. White was attacked at her office by Bates after she returned from lunch and stabbed to death in nearby woods. Bates was executed at 6:17 pm (2217 GMT) at the Florida State Prison, according to officials. There have been 29 executions in the United States in 2025, the most since 2014, when a total of 35 inmates were also put to death. Twenty-four of this year's executions have been carried out by lethal injection, two by firing squad and three by nitrogen hypoxia, which involves pumping nitrogen gas into a face mask, causing the prisoner to suffocate. The use of nitrogen gas as a method of capital punishment has been denounced by United Nations experts as cruel and inhumane. Florida has carried out the most executions in 2025 with 10. The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 US states, while three others—California, Oregon and Pennsylvania—have moratoriums in place. President Donald Trump is a proponent of capital punishment, and on his first day in office called for an expansion of its use 'for the vilest crimes.' — AFP
