Romero replaces Son as Spurs captain
Son, who had worn the armband for the last two seasons and lifted the Europa League in May as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for a trophy, joined LAFC earlier this month.
Romero had acted as vice-captain for the previous two years and started the Europa League final win over Manchester United as skipper before Son came off the bench in the second half.
The 27-year-old Argentine will lead his side out when Tottenham take on European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
"I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain," new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank told the official club website.
"He was very honoured and very happy about it. It's a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season.
"I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he's always pushing the team."

Semenyo racist abuse at Liverpool shocks Bournemouth captain Smith
A Liverpool fan who had been seen gesturing towards the Ghanaian as he took a throw-in was led away by police at half-time. Bournemouth captain Adam Smith said he was left shocked and angered after teammate Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by a fan during the Cherries' 4-2 defeat at Liverpool in the opening game of the Premier League season. The match was briefly halted after half an hour when Semenyo told referee Anthony Taylor of the incident and both managers were informed. ALSO READ: Arsenal 'digging for gold' as title bid starts at new-look Man United A Liverpool fan who had been seen gesturing towards the Ghanaian as he took a throw-in was led away by police at half-time. Semenyo showed remarkable poise to not only continue but go on to score twice in the second half as Bournemouth came within minutes of holding the defending champions to a draw until late strikes by Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah. 'Totally unacceptable. Kind of in shock it happened in this day and age. I don't know how Ant has carried on playing and come up with his goals,' said Smith. Premier League players have taken a knee before matches as part of anti-racism campaigns in recent seasons, but Smith said the message is still not getting through. Tottenham condemned the online racist abuse directed towards Mathys Tel this week after he missed a penalty in Spurs' UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. 'He's a little bit down. Something needs to be done. Taking a knee has taken no effect,' Smith added. 'It's more anger. Shocked. I said to the ref I wanted him removed immediately but the police went and sorted it. The Liverpool players were very supportive to Ant and the rest of the team. Just so angry. 'We've had discussions with the Premier League about it so they have been taking it seriously. I don't know what else we can do. We've been doing it for a long time now and no-one is getting it. I just feel sorry for Ant and he's had to take that. The whole country is watching and it's shocking.' Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said the incident had taken the shine off a thrilling start to the Premier League campaign on the field. 'It is a shame that the first game of the Premier League, both teams playing a really good game we are speaking about this,' said the Spaniard. 'Most of the news will be about this thing and it is still a big problem not just in football but overall. We should be talking about how great the game has been.' Liverpool boss Arne Slot spoke to Semenyo after the match and praised his mental strength. 'We definitely need to address this. It is unacceptable in every football stadium let alone Anfield,' said the Dutchman. 'I spoke to him and said we will do whatever we can to find this person. 'Big credit to him. He's not only a great player but is very strong mentally if something like that happened to have such a second half performance.' 'The club is unable to comment further as tonight's alleged incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, which we will support fully.'

Argentina vs All Blacks - Saturday, 16 August 2025
New Zealand may be favourites on paper, but the aura of guaranteed victory is long gone as they face a resurgent Argentina in their Rugby Championship opener at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes in Córdoba on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 23:10 (SA time). While the All Blacks boast a dominant historical record – winning 28 of the first 29 matches between the two sides – the Pumas have claimed three victories in their last 10 encounters, including memorable wins in Christchurch and Wellington. 'We want to play fast and be really strong at the set-pieces,' said All Black prop Fletcher Newell, noting that the team is still working to 'find its identity' under new head coach Scott Robertson. Robertson has selected Beauden Barrett at flyhalf ahead of Damian McKenzie, citing Barrett's experience and game management. 'Beauden's in great form, so he gets picked,' said Robertson. 'DMac is one of the best players in the game to come off the bench and change the pace. It's a great balance.' The All Blacks head into this clash off a 3-0 Test series win over France, though the visitors were missing key stars like Antoine Dupont. In contrast, Argentina's form remains erratic – having stunned the British & Irish Lions in Dublin before falling to a weakened England in back-to-back home defeats. Robertson acknowledged the role of the raucous Argentine crowd, even taking his players to a local football match for a taste of the intensity. 'They can get a lot of momentum from the energy of the crowd,' Robertson said. 'That's why we're here, that's what we love. South America – you've got that passion.' Argentina loose forward Marcos Kremer believes the key to victory lies in forward dominance. 'The key is to give our backs a plentiful supply of ball. They have the ability to cause problems for any opponents,' he said. With a blend of youthful hunger and seasoned leadership, this opening match promises to be a fierce battle, as the All Blacks aim to set the tone in the southern hemisphere's most prestigious competition – but they'll do so knowing that Argentina can no longer be underestimated. Liverpool match halted after Bournemouth's Semenyo reports racist abuse from crowd
Liverpool's Premier League season-opening match against Bournemouth was briefly halted on Friday after visiting forward Antoine Semenyo reported getting racist abuse from the crowd. Referee Anthony Taylor stopped play at a Liverpool corner in the 29th minute to address the incident, summoning both managers to the touchline for a briefing. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Bournemouth counterpart Adam Smith were then called over to the benches for further instructions before play resumed four minutes later. Following halftime, an anti-discrimination message was read out to the crowd at Anfield. Ghana international Semenyo, 25, went on to score twice after play resumed, helping his side to briefly level the score before reigning Premier League champions Liverpool secured a 4-2 victory with a late surge. "We're very concerned about the allegation of discrimination from an area of the crowd," England's Football Association said in a statement. "Incidents of this nature have no place in our game, and we will work closely with the match officials, the clubs, and the relevant authorities to establish the facts and ensure that the appropriate action is taken." Liverpool said they would fully support the police investigation. "Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form," Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, the match commander for the game, said in a statement. "We take incidents like this very seriously, and in cases like this we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible. "There is no place for racism and it is vital that anyone who witnesses such an offence reports it to stewards, or the police immediately, so we can take the necessary action like we did this evening" What a time to score your first-ever Premier League goal 🤯👏 📺 Stream #LIVBOU on DStv: — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) August 15, 2025 Liverpool coach Arne Slot was upset about the incident. "It is clear that we do not want this in football," the Dutchman said. "We definitely don't want this at Anfield ... This should never happen in football, let alone at Anfield." Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola said: "Straight away, Antoine and the referee told us. The person has been identified. "It's a big shame that these things keep happening. It's the first game of the season, a lovely game of football, and I have to speak about these things happening." The incident at Anfield follows reports of Tottenham Hotspur's French forward Mathys Tel being subjected to racist abuse on social media after missing a penalty in his side's Uefa Super Cup defeat by Paris St Germain on Wednesday.
