Romero replaces Son as Spurs captain
Son, who had worn the armband for the last two seasons and lifted the Europa League in May as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for a trophy, joined LAFC earlier this month.
Romero had acted as vice-captain for the previous two years and started the Europa League final win over Manchester United as skipper before Son came off the bench in the second half.
The 27-year-old Argentine will lead his side out when Tottenham take on European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
"I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain," new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank told the official club website.
"He was very honoured and very happy about it. It's a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season.
"I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he's always pushing the team."

Tottenham condemned the online racist abuse directed towards Mathys Tel this week after he missed a penalty in Spurs' UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. 'He's a little bit down. Something needs to be done. Taking a knee has taken no effect,' Smith added. 'It's more anger. Shocked. I said to the ref I wanted him removed immediately but the police went and sorted it. The Liverpool players were very supportive to Ant and the rest of the team. Just so angry. 'We've had discussions with the Premier League about it so they have been taking it seriously. I don't know what else we can do. We've been doing it for a long time now and no-one is getting it. I just feel sorry for Ant and he's had to take that. The whole country is watching and it's shocking.' Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said the incident had taken the shine off a thrilling start to the Premier League campaign on the field. 'It is a shame that the first game of the Premier League, both teams playing a really good game we are speaking about this,' said the Spaniard. Liverpool boss Arne Slot spoke to Semenyo after the match and praised his mental strength. 'We definitely need to address this. Liverpool match halted after Bournemouth's Semenyo reports racist abuse from crowd
Liverpool's Premier League season-opening match against Bournemouth was briefly halted on Friday after visiting forward Antoine Semenyo reported getting racist abuse from the crowd. Referee Anthony Taylor stopped play at a Liverpool corner in the 29th minute to address the incident, summoning both managers to the touchline for a briefing. "We're very concerned about the allegation of discrimination from an area of the crowd," England's Football Association said in a statement. "Incidents of this nature have no place in our game, and we will work closely with the match officials, the clubs, and the relevant authorities to establish the facts and ensure that the appropriate action is taken."
