Jamie McGrath scores on Hibernian debut in first-leg draw at Midtjylland
McGrath spotted a gap at the near post as the home goalkeeper awaited a cross after the Republic of Ireland international had won a free-kick on the left wing.
His effort was clawed out from behind the line as Hibs delighted more than 1,000 noisy away fans following a bright start.
Hibs were 18 minutes from claiming an away win but Aral Simsir curled home from a 25-yard free-kick to leave the tie all square ahead of next Thursday's second leg at Easter Road.
Gray's side started brightly in Herning and Martin Boyle came close on several occasions before McGrath's early opener.
Boyle was close to connecting with Chris Cadden's cross, then saw a shot deflected past the post before heading wide from a glorious chance from Dylan Levitt's delivery.
Hibs were soon in front and then survived a series of set-pieces before Boyle forced an error in the home defence that led to Kieron Bowie having a shot blocked from 10 yards out.
Goalkeeper Jordan Smith was untroubled in the first half but Hibs had a let-off when Franculino Dju blazed over from 15 yards as the visiting defence backtracked amid a counter-attack.
Boyle thought he had put Hibs two ahead in the 41st minute when he fired inside the goalkeeper's near post but he was half a yard offside when Bowie played him through.
Josh Mulligan tried to emulate McGrath's debut goal 10 minutes into the second half but the former Dundee midfielder saw his 25-yard strike held.
Smith showed adept handling to deal with two long-range efforts and saw Pedro Bravo's curling shot deflected just wide as Hibs continued to frustrate last year's Danish league runners-up.
But the hosts got their breakthrough after Jack Iredale was booked for a trip 25 yards from his goal. Simsir curled the free-kick over the wall and into the top corner.
Boyle had a half chance to put Hibs back in front following good work from Mulligan but the forward was quickly crowded out and his shot was blocked.
Smith soon kept Hibs level with a close-range stop from Kevin Mbabu, the former Newcastle player who had a loan spell with Rangers in 2015 but failed to make an appearance for the Light Blues.
There were four bookings in the bad-tempered closing stages as Hibs held on to take a positive result back to Edinburgh.

They're a million miles off it on and off the pitch and I don't know how they get out of this. 'How do they attract top players this summer and are they even going to be able to pay for them now they're not in the Champions League? Why would big players want to go there?' However, contrary to Shearer's view, it seems Sesko has not been put off by the lack of European football on offer at United amid reports he is favouring a move to Old Trafford over Newcastle, who have qualified for UEFA's top club competition. According to Sky in Germany, Sesko has reacted positively to United's interest. Amorim has already strengthened his forward line this summer with big-money moves for Bryan Mbeumo - who also picked them over a club playing in the Champions League - and Matheus Cunha, but the United boss still wants to add more firepower to his squad. Newcastle aren't out of the race to sign the 22-year-old. The Magpies' need for a quality forward has intensified after Alexander Isak made it clear he wants to leave the club amid interest from Liverpool. Newcastle are under no pressure to sell their star striker but are giving serious consideration to cashing in on a Swede, who was sent home from the club's recent friendly at Celtic before being ruled out of their pre-season tour to Asia. Head coach Eddie Howe insists the final decision over Isak will be made by the club's board. He said: 'I wouldn't put a timescale on it. I think with these situations, it has to be right for the football club, and everything then is taken into context below that. 'But the club will make the right decision with all the information that it has, and ultimately, to try and move the club forward in whatever way that is. Then it's up to us to make good decisions the other way and try and improve the squad as best we can. That's what we're trying to do, regardless of Alex's situation. 'But I think there's a wider picture here. There's a whole football club that has to make the decision. The ownership, together with the board of directors, especially with the money involved in modern day transfers. The manager of course has an opinion, but ultimately the decision will rest with the board.'

Auston Trusty admits Celtic gut punch leaves a sour taste but an increased appetite to put things right
The American can't deny Aberdeen Scottish Cup Final shock still hurts but gives Hoops the hunger to finish the job this season Auston Trusty admits missing out on the Treble felt like a punch in the guts. But the Celtic ace insists the champions have the stomach for another crack at the clean sweep after the Scottish Cup sickener. Brendan Rodgers ' men romped the Premiership having already pocketed the Premier Sports Cup earlier in the campaign. The Treble was in their sights against an Aberdeen side Celts had battered from pillar to post all season. The Dons ripped up the script though at Hampden to humble the Hoops and send them into the summer feeling down in the dumps. Trusty admitted it wasn't the finale they had in mind – but it's only got the squad riled up for another tilt this term. Celts kick off their Premiership title defence against St Mirren on Sunday. And Trusty has warned the Parkhead men mean business. The USA star said: 'It's an interesting one. You have such a good season, get so many points to win the league by a distance, yet somehow end on a sour note. 'That's the level and what this environment is about. You can have an amazing season but if you have the team to win a Treble and don't do it, it does leave a sour taste in the mouths. 'It makes us strive for more. 'I try to think about the positive side. At least for that to happen, we have the hunger in our stomachs to really go for the Treble. 'It obviously sucks not to have won it. But if we can do the same thing and more this season then we'll be in good hands.' Trusty is gearing up for the big kick-off but he knows there's another huge clash coming over the horizon. Celtic's will face a Champions League play-off to reach the group stage this season and failing to get back to the big time doesn't bear thinking about. Rodgers's men will be in the hat for Monday's draw and they could face several dangerous opponents with the likes of Malmo, Sturm Graz and Slovan Bratislava hanging around and a fair few others. Trusty relished competing at the top level last term – and insisted the Champions League was the making of him. The former Sheffield United and Arsenal defender produced a heroic display in the goalless draw in Atalanta on the back of the punishing defeat to Borussia Dortmund that got the Hoops back on track and helped fire the Scots to the knockout stages. Trusty reckons the competition brings out the best in him and he's desperate to give Celtic's attackers the platform to go on the all out attack. He said: 'I loved every second. Every moment you get to play in the Champions League is a dream come true. 'I loved it. You are playing against the best players in the world – that's where I shine as well. 'I think as a player those games should bring the best out of you. You want to be at your best against the best players and teams in the world. 'I think Atalanta really got me off the books, got me off the mark. I just continued from there. 'I think performances like that can give players and the team a lot of confidence. 'We can be aggressive offensively if the guys know the defence rocks behind them. 'If you don't have that you tend to end up being a little too careful and slow in attack. 'We want to allow them to really go for it and have us in behind.' Celtic suffered a sore one against Ajax last week but there have been some positives in preseason to take into Europe – with strong displays in wins against Newcastle United, Sporting Lisbon and Al Ahli. Trusty said: 'Yeah, it comes around quickly. I think the Newcastle game gave us a lot of confidence for Europe. 'It really helped get us up to speed, likewise against Sporting Lisbon, Ajax and Al Ahli. 'These are good teams with quality players and it has put us in a good spot. We obviously have league games before then as well and they are hugely important. 'We can't control who we can get in the draw. We just have to be ready.' Trusty is looking to hit the ground running after impressing in preseason. The 26-year-old even popped up with a goal in the clash with Al Ahli at the weekend and while fans are worried about the lack of signings, the American is convinced the Hoops are in good shape for the opener. Trusty said: 'I enjoyed that one. I was in there and Jamesy (Forrest) was there at the back post and he took a tough and got it to me. 'A goal's a goal whenever it comes. I'll take it! 'Preseason has been good. Sometimes they can get a bit drawn out but this one has flown by. 'We had some gruelling sessions in the first couple of weeks but the games have come thick and fast. 'Overall we've worked on things as a team and we are in a really good place going into the season. 'We've got a strong squad. A lot of the guys are still here and there's great chemistry in the team, a lot of camaraderie.' Trusty enjoyed three weeks on the road with Celts in Ireland, Portugal and Italy but he was delighted to get him to his new wife and baby girl, born at the start of the summer. He said: 'There was a lot going on last season! 'I'm loving every second. My wife is an amazing mum and she's doing an amazing job. 'It's been hard missing out a bit through preseason as I've been loving every bit of it. 'Players are human beings and we're blessed to have this opportunity to play at a club like Celtic. 'But we still live regular lives and you have highs and lows, and everything in the middle. Like sleepless nights!'
