Monkees' Micky Dolenz Reveals He Lost Out on ‘Happy Days' Fonzie Role to Henry Winkler: ‘I Almost Got It'
After his run on The Monkees (1966-1968), the last surviving member of that American fab four said he was on the hunt for a role that would break him out of the mop top drummer cage, so in 1973 he auditioned for the role of Arthur 'The Fonzie' Fonzarelli, the leather jacket-wearing greaser next door who became the break-out star of the show.

'I almost got it,' Dolenz, 80, said. 'Supposedly it was between me and Henry [Winkler]. He remembers it too. The story I heard is that he was in the waiting room, saw me come in, and thought, 'Oh s–t, I'll never get this — Micky Dolenz is here!' So we laugh about it now. He's a good friend and a brilliant talent.'
While Yale School of Drama grad Winkler came into his audition with plenty of stage experience and roles in the indie movies The Lords of Flatbush and Crazy Joe, Dolenz was already a seasoned TV pro by the time he auditioned for Happy Days. At 11, he got the lead role of Corky in the adventure series Circus Boy, which ran on NBC for one season before jumping to ABC for another short run in 1957. A young Dolenz then scored a few TV roles in the late 1950s and early 1960s — credited as Micky Braddock — before being cast as Micky on The Monkees alongside Michael Nesmith, Davy Jones and Peter Tork.
When that show ended, Dolenz decided to focus on directing and producing, realizing that his gig as the spacey, floppy-haired drummer would likely get him typecast like his father, George Dolenz, an actor he said got pegged as a 'swashbuckling romantic lead in sword-fighting movies' such as The Purple Mask and Sign of the Pagan.
'After Circus Boy, I went to a few auditions as a 12-year-old, and the minute I walked in, they'd say, 'Circus Boy'! That's just typical in this business. I knew it was par for the course,' said Dolenz, who added that after the Monkees it was more of the same. ''What are you doing here? We don't need any drummers!'' he said casting directors would tell him.
Following his pivot to a number of small movie roles and voice work on dozens of cartoons in the 1970s, 'I'm a Believer' singer Dolenz said he has no regrets about the one that got away. 'Oh my God, he's just so good,' he said of Winkler, who parlayed his iconic role into a fifty-plus year career on TV (Mork & Mindy, Arrested Development) and movies (Night Shift, The French Dispatch). 'I was definitely not as good as he was. Come on — he was The Fonz! He had that New York, New Jersey thing down. I'm from Southern California. It wasn't gonna happen!,' Dolenz said.
Dolenz is going on tour this summer with his Songs & Stories tour, which mixes his iconic hits with stories about fellow L.A. legends such as Joni Mitchell, David Crosby and Jim Morrison. The tour is slated to kick off on August 11 at the Ocean City Music Pier in Ocean City, NJ.

Kevin Durant, Houston's Trill Burgers team up for Texas flood relief
Starting August 15 and lasting for a week, a burger and t-shirt featuring Kevin Durant's likeness will be available at Houston's Trill Burgers. Rapper Bun B, who has long been known for his dedication to Houston,is collaborating with newly acquired Rockets star Kevin Durant for a limited time promotion at Trill Burgers. Starting Friday, August 15, and lasting for a week, the 'Easy Money Burger' and 'Easy Money T-Shirt' — in reference to the All-Star forward's nickname — will be available at the two Houston-area locations of Trill Burgers (co-founded by Bun B). The shirt can also be purchased online. Proceeds will benefit flood relief for the Texas Hill Country, which suffered devastating damage and loss of life during the July 4 holiday weekend. 'We wanted to do something to make his introduction to the city meaningful,' Bun B said of his new partnership with the NBA star. The two are longtime friends. Dating back to his college days, Durant has extensive ties to the region and state. Houston's CW 39 (KIAH) has more: The Easy Money Burger was created using all of the player's favorite burger toppings: ketchup, mayo, pickles and American cheese. Each burger will also be served with custom packaging with imagery that represents Durant's basketball career at the University of Texas. 'This partnership is dedicated to the Central Texas Hill Country area, where KD played college basketball,' Bun B said. 'We wanted to create something that will give back to the community Kevin is connected with and so passionate about, and we hope to provide meaningful support for our Texas neighbors as we all work together to recover from this devastating flooding.' Later this week, Maroon 5 will release a new album, Love Is Like, the group's eighth full-length. The set, expected on August 15, has pushed several singles from its tracklist, but only one has made any real commercial impact. The Grammy-winning act recruited Blackpink star Lisa for 'Priceless,' and her fame helped turn the tune into a hit on the Billboard charts. Just ahead of Love Is Like arriving, 'Priceless' climbs on multiple radio rosters in America. As it ascends, Lisa matches a record previously managed by some of the biggest K-pop stars in history. Lisa's Collaboration Reaches a New Peak The song lifts a single spot on the Adult Contemporary chart this time around, in its twelfth frame on the roster. The Maroon 5 collaboration settles at No. 16 — a new peak position. Lisa Ties BTS and Rosé No. 16 stands as the highest spot any K-pop act has reached on the Adult Contemporary chart. Lisa joins three other tunes: 'Apt.' by Rosé and Bruno Mars, 'Dynamite' by BTS, and 'My Universe,' the same septet's team-up with Coldplay. All four cuts stalled at No. 16. Lisa's 'Priceless' Could Climb Even Higher No. 16 seems to be a stopping point for K-pop stars on the Adult Contemporary chart, but Lisa may be able to break out of the mold and pass her Blackpink bandmate and BTS. Promotion of all things Maroon 5 — including 'Priceless' and Love Is Like — is at an all-time high, since the album drops in just a few days. That may help Lisa's cut gain ground on the airplay tally, one of three focused on pop music published by Billboard. There's a good chance that 'Priceless' will climb again in the coming week or possibly several weeks. If it manages to ascend by even one more spot, Lisa will claim the highest-charting single of all time by any K-pop act on the tally. 'Priceless' Lives on Every Pop Radio Rankin 'Priceless' currently appears on all three of Billboard's pop radio lists. As it hits a new high on the Adult Contemporary chart, the tune returns to its all-time best showing on the Adult Pop Airplay list, stepping up from No. 7 to No. 6.
