The New Volvo ES90 Is a Stylish Electric Sedan With an SUV's Stance

The newest addition to Volvo's growing stable of full-electric vehicles is a clever remix of the brand's familiar design elements and new technologies. Meet the all-new 2026 Volvo ES90. A tall sedan with an SUV twist, this class-bending vehicle is expected to arrive sometime next year boasting impressive range and wicked-fast charging thanks to its 800-volt EV architecture.
The ES90's crossover design isn't dissimilar to its Swedish cousin, the Polestar 2. Both EVs blend a sedan's proportions and three-box roofline with the utility of a liftback rear hatch and SUV scale. However, with its 122.1-inch wheelbase within a 196.9-inch bumper-to-bumper stretch, the ES90 is significantly larger than the P2 in every dimension. That makes this less a Tesla Model 3 competitor and more an alternative to the full-size Model S, though even here the Swede stands apart with its more upright proportions -- owed to its SUV-esque 7.1 inches of ground clearance and elevated seating position -- and slightly longer wheelbase.
For the best idea of how big the Volvo will be, you could pop over to your local Toyota dealer and have a peep at the Crown, which is a similarly sized but slightly different take on the sedan-utility-vehicle chimera.
Volvo's design language is well established, so there aren't too many surprises to be found in the ES90's design. Its essentially a sedan variant of the EX90 electric SUV, from the "Thor's Hammer" headlamp light signature to the minimalist interior with its clever use of premium, sustainable materials. The rear end, however, is where you'll find my favorite design detail. Just above the horizontal C-shaped tail lights -- a hallmark of the brand's sedans -- you'll find vertical LED segments flanking the rear glass, a nod that echoes and links the ES90 to the design of Volvo's SUVs.
Beneath the rear liftgate, the ES90 boasts 14.97 cubic feet of cargo space that expands to 25.89 cubes when the rear seats fold flat to accommodate bulky items. That's joined by a 0.78 cubic foot frunk under the hood. That's about the size of a large backpack, which isn't much, but serves as a nice cubby to keep a charging cable or roadside emergency kit tucked out of the way.
Like the EX90, the ES90 has a prominent lidar hump at the top of its windshield both powering and drawing attention to the brand's next-generation driver assistance technology. It's a bit of overkill for today's safety features, the automaker told me previously at the EX90 debut, but this "Volvo for Life" approach provides future-ready overhead for tomorrow's safety technologies and over-the-air updates that may come over the lifetime of the EV. The lidar sensor is joined by five radar arrays, eight cameras and a dozen ultrasonic sensors located around the exterior feeding data to the collision mitigation, pedestrian safety, lane keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control features today, but may eventually help power more automated driver aid systems down the road.
The ES90 is also outfitted with interior radar and camera sensors that are used to power the driver alertness monitoring system and full-cabin occupant detection. The latter, I'm told, is submillimeter-scale sensitive and able to detect even "the soft breathing of a sleeping baby" in the back seat and alert a forgetful parent leaving the vehicle.
Prospective owners will have their choice of three different configurations when spec'ing their ES90: Single Motor, Dual Motor and Dual Motor Performance. The Single Motor setup mates a 92 kilowatt-hour battery pack with a 245-kilowatt motor on the rear axle, delivering around 329 horsepower, 354 pound-feet of torque and a 0 to 60 mph sprint in 6.7 seconds.
The Dual Motor config installs a 130 kW motor on the front axle and a 300 kW unit at the rear, powering both with a larger 106 kWh battery pack. Total output climbs to 442 hp and 494 lb-ft of torque, while the 0-60 hustle drops to 5.3 seconds. Finally, Dual Motor Performance turns up the wick with 220 kW and 280 kW for the front and rear axle motors, which works out to 670 total hp and 635 lb-ft of twist. The quickest configuration of the trio launches to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
Volvo estimates that the ES90 will cruise up to 404 miles with the smaller battery or 435 miles on the big pack, but that's on the more generous European WLTP testing cycle. US EPA estimates are still forthcoming, more demanding and usually end up around 10% lower.
The ES90 will be the first Volvo car to make use of an 800-volt version of the brand's SPA2 EV architecture, which comes with the advantages of improved efficiency and faster charging compared to the 400-volt underpinnings of the EX90. Volvo claims the Single Motor electric crossover will be able to charge from 10% to 80% in around 20 minutes at a 300-kilowatt DC fast charging station or a 350 kW plug for Dual Motor models. The ES90 will also arrive "hardware ready" for bidirectional charging at home and with support for plug-and-charge payment for more convenient charging at public stations on the road.
Globally, the ES90 will feature a Combined Charging System port for AC and DC fast charging. The automaker hasn't announced whether it'll use CCS or the North American Charging Standard in the US, but (like the EX90 already does) it will certainly support both connections and Tesla's Supercharger network via adapters.
Inside, Volvo's minimalist and airy Scandinavian design is highlighted by an optional electrochromic glass roof that goes from 99% opaque to transparent with the touch of a button. The EV's spartan dashboard is home to a 14.5-inch central touch display, a 9-inch digital instrument cluster and, invisible to all but the driver, a windshield projected head-up display.
Infotainment duties are handled by the ES90's Google Built-in software suite, which makes native use of Google Maps for navigation, Google Assistant for voice command and search and the Google Play Store for finding and downloading all sorts of music and media streaming apps. For those who'd rather bring their own apps, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay phone mirroring are supported. An iPhone, Apple Watch or Android phone can also be used to unlock and start the EV via the Digital Key Plus feature. Meanwhile, Google Home integration allows easy integration with tech outside of the car.
Volvo says the ES90 will have the brand's quietest cabin ever. To fill the silence, shoppers will have their pick of three audio system options with the top spec Bowers & Wilkins rig boasting 25-speakers, 1,610 watts of amplification, Dolby Atmos playback and the automaker's new Abbey Road Studio Mode, which I was able to go ears-on with last year.
The 2026 Volvo ES90 will be the sixth full-electric vehicle in the automaker's global portfolio, joining the newly renamed EX40 and EC40, the compact EX30, the Chinese-market EM90 electric minivan and the flagship EX90 SUV. European drivers will get the first crack at the new ES90 when the order books open today. The automaker says that reservations will open in more markets "later this year and into 2026," so it may be a while before you'll be able to reserve one in North America (and longer still before the first examples arrive.) In the meanwhile, watch this space for updates on US pricing and range estimates.

Walmart's majority-owned fintech startup OnePay said Monday it was launching a pair of new credit cards for customers of the world's biggest retailer. OnePay is partnering with Synchrony, a major behind-the-scenes player in retail cards, which will issue the cards and handle underwriting decisions starting in the fall, the companies said. OnePay, which was created by Walmart in 2021 with venture firm Ribbit Capital, will handle the customer experience for the card program through its mobile app. Walmart had leaned on Capital One as the exclusive provider of its credit cards since 2018, but sued the bank in 2023 so that it could exit the relationship years ahead of schedule. At the time, Capital One accused Walmart of seeking to end its partnership so that it could move transactions to OnePay. The Walmart card program had 10 million customers and roughly $8.5 billion in loans outstanding last year, when the partnership with Capital One ended, according to Fitch Ratings. For Walmart and its fintech firm, the arrangement shows that, in seeking to quickly scale up in financial services, OnePay is opting to partner with established players rather than going it alone. In March, OnePay announced that it was tapping Swedish fintech firm Klarna to handle buy now, pay later loans at the retailer, even after testing its own installment loan program. In its quest to become a one-stop shop for Americans underserved by traditional banks, OnePay has methodically built out its offerings, which now include debit cards, high-yield savings accounts and a digital wallet with peer-to-peer payments. OnePay is rolling out two options: a general-purpose credit card that can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted and a store card that will only allow Walmart purchases. Customers whose credit profiles don't allow them to qualify for the general-purpose card will be offered the store card, according to a person with knowledge of the program. OnePay didn't yet disclose the rewards expected with the cards, though the general-purpose card is expected to provide a stronger value, said this person, who declined to be identified speaking ahead of the product's release. The Synchrony partnership was reported earlier by Bloomberg. "Our goal with this credit card program is to deliver an experience for consumers that's transparent, rewarding, and easy to use," OnePay CEO Omer Ismail said in the Monday release. "We're excited to be partnering with Synchrony to launch a program at Walmart that checks each of those boxes and will help serve millions of people," Ismail said.

Toyota Math: 9 Million EVs Are Just as Polluting as 27 Million Hybrids

Akio Toyoda is a man who speaks his mind. He's been saying for years that forcing everyone to buy EVs isn't the way forward. Toyota's chairman is adamant that the transition can't be rushed and that going all-in on electric vehicles would have massive repercussions across the automotive industry. He believes millions of jobs throughout the supply chain could be at risk if the combustion engine is phased out too quickly. On the environmental front, Toyoda maintains that EVs are still much dirtier than hybrids. The grandson of Toyota founder Kiichiro Toyoda claims the company has sold around 27 million hybrids since launching the first-generation Prius in 1997. According to him, those hybrids have had the same carbon footprint as nine million fully electric vehicles. Put another way, a single EV is as dirty as three hybrids. He argues that the gap is even wider when EVs are charged using electricity from thermal power stations reliant on fossil fuels, as is the case in Japan. 'But if we were to have made nine million BEVs in Japan, it would have actually increased the carbon emissions, not reduced them. That is because Japan relies on thermal power plants for electricity.' Proving Naysayers Wrong Toyota's reluctance to fully embrace EVs has sparked criticism, with some even questioning the company's future. You've probably seen comments predicting Toyota's downfall for lagging in the electric race, but that hasn't happened. In fact, the opposite is true. In 2024, Toyota was the world's largest automaker for the fifth year in a row. Sure, its EVs may trail the competition, but Toyota more than makes up for it with its hybrids and the remaining ICE models it still sells. The latest gas-powered car to receive the hybrid treatment is the Aygo X , the firm's smallest model outside of the kei cars, which are sold exclusively in Japan. Toyota claims the dinky hatchback has the lowest CO₂ footprint of any non-plug-in car on the market. Akio Toyoda once said EVs would never exceed a 30% market share and argued that the industry should focus on hybrids and synthetic fuels. Although it has admitted the Mirai has been a commercial failure , Toyota remains committed to hydrogen and sees potential in combining it with combustion engines. At the same time, it's helping BMW launch its first series-production hydrogen vehicle in 2028. Toyota Can Do It All As the automotive powerhouse it is, Toyota has the financial and industrial muscle to improve its hybrids while also developing better EVs. It has made the bZ more appealing and added the bZ Woodland and C-HR to its growing electric lineup. Its luxury brand Lexus recently launched the ES electric sedan and upgraded the RZ. According to a new Bloomberg report, two more EVs are coming to the U.S. by 2027. While the spotlight is on hybrids and EVs, Toyota hasn't forgotten the joy of driving. The company's CEO, Koji Sato, was recently quoted as saying, 'A car is not a car if it's not fun.' In the coming years, expect a new Supra, a revived Celica, and possibly a new MR2, judging by the mid-engine prototype shown earlier this year. Lexus, too, will launch a GT3-style road car, likely with a V-8. All told, Toyota appears to have just about every base covered. The impending return of the FJ Cruiser would further cement Toyota's reputation for offering one of the most comprehensive lineups in the automotive industry. 'My friend Travis … he was like, 'Man, it'd feel good if you won from that school up north right in their backyard,' Hamlin said. 'I said, 'Well, I'm going to do it for you.' And so I did it just for my buddy.' What he did for his buddy was do a little "O-S-U" chant and arm gesture as a nod to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Advertisement Hamlin might not hate Michigan, but he does love playing the villain, and this weekend was a perfect moment for that. He's on the back nine of his racing years, his company is under threat from his NASCAR lawsuit and he's waiting on the birth of his son. Hamlin had a million reasons to lose the race this weekend. Instead, he came from behind in the waning laps of the race to snatch the win from the driver who'd led most of the race right after the hometown kid suffered a flat tire. Amid yellow and red flags, Hamlin emerged victorious – much to the crowd's displeasure. He did not mind, though. 'Until the crowd shifts to mostly cheers or boos, I'm always going to antagonize the booers like that,' Hamlin said. 'Until you really get the switch, which I don't think I'm ever going to in my career, what else is there? … I got to find ways to have fun doing this.' Hamlin did not seem like the likely winner when the race began, either. Despite his starting third, many eyes were on points leader William Byron, starting fourth, or Carson Hocevar, whose hot stretch coming into the race was a topic of conversation around the pit lane. Hamlin was still in third after a relatively uneventful Stage 1 for him despite several lead changes ahead of him and a fierce battle for fourth and fifth behind his car. Starting in Stage 2, however, Hamlin's performance took a dive. Though he was second at the start, he began dropping down the race order, and while battling with Kyle Larson on Lap 58, he got loose and dropped five spots down to eleventh. It was a poor moment for Hamlin, who easily could have been buried down the order with the chaos of the restarts of the second stage. Advertisement Instead, Hamlin pulled himself back up the order, and by Lap 85, he had battled back to around the fifth position. He ended the stage eighth but he was still in the fight. As the third stage commenced, Hamlin was still back in the pack, at one point sitting around eleventh. He also sustained damage after a pit incident where he was stuck between two cars attempting to leave. As the laps ticked down, a comeback seemed increasingly unlikely. But he went to work, moving up one car at a time. By Lap 175, he'd reached fifth and knew that the drivers ahead of him were in much more dire straits regarding fuel then he was. Seven laps later, Hocevar went down with a flat tire and Hamlin was suddenly in fourth. Hamlin took down Ty Gibbs on Lap 185 and passed Kyle Larson one lap later. Byron was nearly out of fuel and was desperately conserving while attempting to hold off Hamlin. Hamlin waited for his opportunity and began an earnest battle for the lead at Lap 196. He passed Byron on Lap 197 at Turn 3 where he had identified Byron as vulnerable and claimed victory two laps later. Byron ultimately had to pit on the second-to-last lap, out of fuel. Hamlin also ran out of fuel – it was just on his second round of victory burnouts. 'I never will assume someone's going to run out,' Hamlin said. 'And I always am going to assume when I get there to challenge for the lead, they're going to go 100%. And I think that was the case, they told me over the radio (that) they told him, 'You got to go, you got to hold the lead, and (if) we run out, we run out.' That's the right strategy to do, which in turn made it more gratifying to me to pass him when he was going all out.' Hamlin may be 44, but he's not done yet. He's already achieved something only twenty drivers ever have in competing in 700 races, but he wants more wins. He's not done showing the kids what he can do, either. 'I'm racing guys that are, you know, some of them pretty much half my age,' Hamlin said. 'And they're so good, and they're really, really good, and so it's really gratifying when I know I can run with them, and I know I can beat them. … It just feels really good to, 20 years later, still feel like this is the best that I've ever been.'
