Marc Stein reveals Lakers' 'preferred scenario' for LeBron James

USA Today17 hours ago
It appears that LeBron James will be a member of the Los Angeles Lakers for the immediate future, despite the trade rumors that have surrounded him over the last few weeks. He decided to exercise the player option on his contract for this coming season on June 29, and on that day, his agent, Rich Paul, issued a statement that many interpreted as a prelude to a possible trade request.
What he will do once the 2025-26 season ends, however, is anyone's best guess. He could leave the Lakers, or he could possibly continue to play for them. At the same time, there is speculation that the franchise wants to move on from him.
NBA insider Marc Stein wrote on his substack "The Stein Line" that the Lakers' "preferred scenario" is to simply let James walk at the end of this coming season.
'The Lakers' widely presumed preferred scenario for their future is letting James' contract drop off their books after the 2025-26 season.'
The superstar will make $52.6 million this coming season. According to an ESPN report, Los Angeles didn't offer him a contract extension this offseason.
According to at least one other report, the Lakers are just about done with James and are already angling to land another superstar to pair with Luka Doncic within the next couple of years.

Luka Doncic: 'Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better'

Nothing motivates the greats quite like the quest to prove someone wrong. When the Dallas Mavericks shocked the NBA by trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers, it was followed up by spin out of Dallas about GM Nico Harrison and the franchise's concerns about Doncic's lack of commitment to conditioning, taking care of his body and defense. This summer, we have seen 'skinny' Luka on social media as he works out to get in shape. Doncic spoke about that with Men's Health Magazine. Our digital cover star, Luka Doncic, ready to take his game (and the Lakers) to new levels of dominance. And this summer shred has been years in the ' Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better... 'Every summer I try my best to work on different things. Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better... 'Obviously, be the best that I can be, take care of myself. This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop.' The Mavericks were not wrong to have concerns about Doncic's conditioning, it certainly has not been consistent throughout his career. (It's still a massive leap from having concerns to trading a top-five player in the world as he enters his prime because of it.) Doncic has improved his conditioning in the past, but due to injuries and other reasons, it has never stayed at the level Dallas' Harrison — a Kobe Bryant guy — expected. What should scare the Mavericks is that they have just become the motivation he needed to genuinely change. If the disrespect from Dallas, combined with being on a new team and watching LeBron James' commitment to his body and conditioning daily, changes Doncic's habits, then the Mavericks have unleashed a monster on the league. Doncic had spent the summer back in Europe with family and friends, but landed back in the United States in the last 48 hours for a Jordan Brand promotional shoe tour. After that tour, he returns to Slovenia to lead his national team in the EuroBasket that starts at the end of this month. Doncic is eligible for a contract extension this summer: On Aug. 2, the Lakers can offer him a four-year, $223 million extension. They will, and Doncic is expected to re-sign with the team, although most likely on a three-year, $165 million max contract (or three plus a player option) because in three years he will have reached 10 years of service in the league and then can sign for up to 35% of the salary cap (the most the Lakers could offer right now is 30%). Expect that deal to be finalized before the season starts (possibly this week, while he is in the USA on a shoe tour, or perhaps closer to Lakers training camp).

Sometimes, a little bit of positive public relations is all you need to convince the gambling public that this is finally the year. Lakers superstar Luka Doncic was featured on the cover of Men's Health on Monday after rampant criticism surrounded his conditioning and weight during previous seasons. Meanwhile, an ESPN BET spokesperson tells The Post that Doncic is getting loads of bets from excited gamblers looking for an edge. 3 Luka Doncic was on the cover of Men's Health on Monday. No other player has received close to this level of interest on the MVP market, with Victor Wembanyama getting the second most money to win MVP, at just 8.6 percent of the handle. DraftKings and BetMGM are seeing similar results in the market. On Monday, Doncic had received 67 percent of bets to win MVP as well as 57 percent of the handle on DraftKings. Meanwhile, BetMGM reports to The Post that a whopping 79 percent of the money has been wagered on Doncic to win MVP on Monday in the MVP market. 3 Luka Doncic in his debut game with the Lakers, Feb. 10, 2025. Mens Health Magazine Doncic told Men's Health that 'Visually, I would say my whole body looks better.' The Dallas Mavericks made it relatively clear that they were moving on from Doncic, both as a player and in terms of his work habits, when they traded him to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a draft pick in a shocking midseason blockbuster. Betting on the NBA? General manager Nico Harrison consistently bashed his poor defensive effort and game conditioning after they unceremoniously traded him under everyone's nose. Doncic is surely looking for a revenge season as the leader of the Lakers, although his running mate, LeBron James, has had a bizarre back-and-forth with the team that included rumors that he is looking for a trade. If Doncic's newfound emphasis on health and fitness is real, James might be pleased enough to stick around in Hollywood a bit longer. Lakers' Luka Doncic shows off summer shred in Men's Health

After plenty of attention was brought to Luka Doncic's fitness level following his shocking February trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, the five-time All-Star has been putting another surprise together this offseason. After reports of an improved physique surfaced earlier this summer, a profile in Men's Health magazine confirmed the extent to which Doncic has gone to develop a slimmed-down look as he prepares for his first full season in L.A. Doncic, 26, has generally been listed at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, although opinions on the weight have varied. It did not prohibit him from scoring 28.2 points with 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists last season. But reports indicated this past winter that the Dallas Mavericks had become exasperated with Doncic's lack of fitness, which might have contributed to a calf injury that the star guard had been rehabbing for a month prior to the trade that shocked the NBA. Ankle, calf, knee and back injuries have slowed Doncic at certain times in his career, although he still managed to play at least 61 games in a season until he was reduced to 50 last year with the Mavericks and Lakers combined. Now, Doncic is visibly slimmer after an improved diet combined with a fitness program. He has been avoiding gluten and keeping sugar to a minimum, while loading up on protein to help him get through multiple workouts a day that include lifting weights along with on-court drills. "Obviously, be the best that I can be, take care of myself," Doncic said to Men's Health. "This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop." While LeBron James exercised a contract option to return to the Lakers in 2025-26, the team also added center Deandre Ayton, guard Marcus Smart and forward Jake LaRavia. The profile did not mention Doncic's current weight, but photographs showed off his slim look with greater muscle definition in his arms. His workouts kept him away from basketball at first, then had him return to the court in June. He will play for Slovenia in EuroBasket in August. "So every summer I try my best to work on different things," he said. "Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better." --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved
