Akmal, Khoo question Azmin's ambitions for Bersatu in Melaka

(From left) Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh told Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali that people in Melaka do not want political leaders who only show up for elections, while Melaka DAP chief Khoo Poay Tiong feels Bersatu should 'tone down the big talk'.
PETALING JAYA : Bersatu must prove that it has leaders who truly serve the people if it wants to win more state assembly seats in Melaka, said Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh.
Responding to Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali's confidence that Bersatu will perform strongly at the next Melaka state election, Akmal, who is also a Melaka executive councillor, said people in the state want leaders who can serve.
'The people want leaders who serve all the time, not just show up when elections are near,' the Merlimau assemblyman told FMT.
'If Bersatu is confident it can take over Melaka, PN (Perikatan Nasional) must prove it has capable leaders.'
Melaka DAP chief Khoo Poay Tiong reminded Bersatu not to be boastful ahead of the state election.
'Tone down the big talk and continue fulfilling the responsibilities given by the people,' said the Kota Melaka MP.
The state assembly's term will end in November 2026, and an election must be held within 60 days of its dissolution.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Azmin said he was sure Bersatu had a promising future in Melaka based on data and analysis from the 15th general election.
PN has three assemblymen in the 28-seat Melaka state assembly, with Bersatu having two – Bemban assemblyman Dr Yadzil Yaakub and Sungai Udang assemblyman Aleef Yusof – and PAS one.
Rembia assemblyman Jailani Khamis, who was previously part of the government bloc, was moved to the opposition bloc last December after PAS said he joined the party in 2023.
Umno suspended Jailani's membership for six years for allegedly sabotaging the party by attending the announcement of the PN candidate for the Simpang Jeram by-election in Bakri, Johor.

Zahid hints ties with Tengku Zafrul remain intact

Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he had long held on to the principle that political differences should not undermine the management of national affairs. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says differences with Tengku Zafrul Aziz over their respective political affiliation have not affected their cooperation in managing the country's affairs, particularly on economic and trade matters. 'That has always been my principle. We draw a clear line that political matters must be set aside when it comes to handling organisational matters, esspecially where national governance is concerned,' he told reporters after launching the Women in Export Forum 2025. The Umno president further quipped that the only thing missing was 'a public display of affection', hinting that relations between the two remained cordial. Tengku Zafrul, who is the investment, trade and industry minister, resigned from Umno on May 30 and announced his intention to join PKR. MORE TO COME

Use internal channels to air grievances, S'gor PKR members told

Selangor PKR secretary Khairuddin Othman said members should focus on strengthening the party instead of making statements that tarnish its image. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Two Selangor PKR leaders have reminded members and elected representatives to refrain from making public statements that could damage the party's image. Selangor PKR secretary Khairuddin Othman said criticism should be raised internally to avoid creating a negative perception of the party. 'We urge all members to focus on strengthening the party in Selangor. Don't shoot ourselves in the foot with public remarks. 'We're part of the government, and we have internal party channels that should be used,' he told FMT. Earlier, Subang PKR deputy chief Wan Hasifi Amin expressed a loss of confidence in the constituency's MP, Wong Chen, and suggested he step down from the elected post if the party's struggle no longer aligned with his. He said Wong's recent statement, where he lamented the lack of reforms carried out by the unity government, was unnecessary, especially coming from a PKR MP. Wan Hasifi also claimed that the three-term MP did not attend a single divisional meeting since being elected a PKR central leadership council member in 2022, a post he lost in the party's recent elections. He called for Wong to be dropped as a candidate in the next general election, saying Subang PKR wanted an MP who was not 'distant' from the grassroots and heeded the voice of the people. PKR Youth deputy chief Izuan Kasim said all PKR leaders, including those at the grassroots level, should focus on uniting members following the party's recently concluded elections. 'PKR should be the voice of the people and help explain government programmes,' said Izuan, who is also the Kota Damansara assemblyman. 'I respect every member's views and criticism, but not all of them need to be aired through the media.' Wong announced on Sunday that he was taking a two-week break from work for a family holiday, during which he would ponder his future in politics. Wong said he could not shake a deep worry that the government, led by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, would have little to show in terms of institutional reforms at the end of its parliamentary term.

DBKL to form task force ahead of Urban Renewal Act

Kuala Lumpur mayor Maimunah Sharif said DBKL will work with professionals to assist owners and developers who are interested in taking up redevelopment work under the Urban Renewal Act. PETALING JAYA : Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will set up a task force to guide stakeholders on urban redevelopment once the proposed Urban Renewal Act (URA) comes into effect, says Kuala Lumpur mayor Maimunah Sharif. She said the task force would study the proposed law and help DBKL support property owners involved in redevelopment projects, The Edge reported. 'This is to ensure DBKL is well prepared to assist property owners with matters regarding urban redevelopment,' she said during a forum organised by the Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association (Rehda) Institute. 'We are here to facilitate … DBKL will also work with professionals to assist owners and developers who are interested in taking up the redevelopment work.' Maimunah stressed that while DBKL would play a supporting role, the initiative for redevelopment must come from property owners themselves. 'Urban development should be an owner-led initiative. Developers should be the last to step in,' she said. The proposed URA, spearheaded by the housing and local government ministry, aims to replace outdated legislation governing the redevelopment of ageing and dilapidated areas. However, the URA has sparked concern among civil society groups and opposition parties who argue that it could displace lower-income residents unable to afford redeveloped housing. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said the Act will not force property owners to give up their homes or change the ethnic makeup of neighbourhoods.
