12 Years of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag: Farhan Akhtar never made me feel like my role was small, says Sonam Kapoor
'Rakeysh Mehra gave me confidence when I really needed it'
While
Farhan Akhtar
as
Milkha Singh
was the beating heart and soul of Bhaal Milkha Bhaag (BMB),
Sonam Kapoor
as Biro was the wind beneath his wings. As
Rakeysh OmPrakash Mehra
's film is all set to return to theatres 12 years after its release, Sonam reminisces her experience and journey of the film.
Speaking of its relevance, she told Bombay Times in an exclusive interview, 'It's the spirit of the story that keeps it relevant even today. Milkha Singh's journey is about more than just sport — it's about courage, discipline, and overcoming heartbreak. That kind of story will always resonate. It inspires every time you watch it, no matter your age or background. And even now, people message me about how O Rangrez moves them.
That says everything.'
Looking back, she added, 'Honestly, it was one of the warmest, most joyful sets I've ever been on. We were telling a deeply emotional story, but there was so much laughter between takes. Farhan, Rakeysh sir and the whole crew had this incredible energy — kind, focused, collaborative. It felt like family.'
As the director told us, Sonam was gracious enough to a 15 minute role because she believed in the story.

Sonam reacted, 'I said yes the minute I read the script — I actually cried while reading it. It wasn't about the length of the role or anything else. I just knew I had to be part of this film. I even did it for just Rs.11 — it was from the heart.'
The actress was all praise for her costar as well. She shared, 'Working with Farhan was amazing. He's one of the most dedicated, multi-talented people I've met. Watching him become Milkha Singh with such intensity was genuinely inspiring.
He never made me feel like I was doing a small role — we were all in it together.'
Be it Delhi 6 or Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Rakeysh Mehra has a distinct way of portraying Sonam. The actress nodded in affirmative, and explained, 'Rakeysh sir sees his characters with so much depth and tenderness. In both Delhi-6 and BMB, he brought out a quiet strength and softness in me that I really cherish. Biro was simple and pure, and I loved playing her. He also gave me confidence when I really needed it — made me feel seen, made me feel beautiful as a performer.
I always say this: if Rakeysh sir asks me to walk backwards for a scene, I'll do it. That's the kind of faith I have in him.'

Not Arjun Rampal, this actor was supposed to play villain in Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone's Om Shanti Om, rejected due to..., he is...
In glittering world of Bollywood, casting choices often remain behind the curtain, hidden from the audience's view. Yet, sometimes, these concealed decisions hold tales as captivating as the films themselves. One such intriguing anecdote revolves around a 2007 blockbuster Om Shanti Om, helmed by Farah Khan, which introduced Deepika Padukone, showcased superstar Shah Rukh Khan in dual avatars, and featured Arjun Rampal as a villain whose charm was as potent as his malevolence. But did you know that, for the negative character, Arjun was not the first choice for makers? Who was the first choice for Arjun Rampal's character? In an interview with TOI, Farah Khan shared an interesting anecdote about the casting of Om Shanti Om's negative flamboyant character Mukesh Mehra and mentioned that Arjun Rampal was never the choice for this role. Farah mentioned that casting for this entirely negative character was particularly challenging, as many actors declined the part due to its dark nature. Among those approached was Vivek Oberoi, who was offered the role but turned it down. Oberoi later explained that he had already committed to playing gangster Maya Dolas in Shootout at Lokhandwala, a role he had extensively researched and prepared for. Thus, switching to different negative character in Om Shanti Om would have been difficult at that point. How did Arjun Rampal land in Om Shanti Om? With the film's shooting imminent and no actor finalized for the antagonist, Farah Khan and Shah Rukh Khan found themselves in a predicament. At a New Year's Eve party hosted by Shah Rukh, they encountered Arjun Rampal and seized the opportunity to pitch the role to him. In a light-hearted yet desperate move, they reportedly cornered Rampal in a bathroom to narrate the script. Initially hesitant, Rampal was eventually persuaded by Shah Rukh's insistence and agreed to take on the role More about Om Shanti Om Om Shanti Om was the biggest Hindi blockbuster of 2007, earning ₹79 crore in India and over Rs 150 crore worldwide. Its mix of reincarnation, music, and star power, including SRK's dual role, Arjun Rampal's villanous shade and Deepika's debut made it a mass hit. The 'Deewangi Deewangi' song with 31 celeb cameos added to its appeal.

He took to Instagram to share a post which confirmed his exit from the five-day format of the game. During his 14-year-long Test career, Kohli played 123 Tests for India and, with the help of 30 centuries and 31 fifties, amassed a total of 9230 runs. During his playing days, Sangakkara scored 14,234 runs in 404 matches, whereas Kohli has 14,181 runs to his name in 302 ODIs. He needs to score 54 more runs to go past Sangakkara's tally. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
